ABSTRACT: Error in science is a prime occasion to teach the nature of science, especially the central feature of tentativeness. Error types also reflect corresponding methodologies of science, critical for practicing science and (in a context of scientific literacy) analyzing its claims. Effective efforts in teaching about error will ideally be informed by earlier educa- tional perspectives and a schema for inventorying and organizing error types. Approaches using student-directed inquiry have limits, whereas guided-inquiry historical case studies seem appropriate vehicles. On a larger scale, one may also envision a prospective learning progression on successively deeper understandings of error in science.     How do homeopathy users perceive homeopathy? Manon Françoise Fabienne Marie Knapen A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand September 2018 ABSTRACT Life expectancy has steadily increased over the last two centuries due to improvements in living standards, education, science and medicine. However, instead of basing health decisions on the best scientific evidence available, millions of people are currently using unsupported complementary and alternative medicines (CAM). The use of CAM is rising worldwide despite the lack of robust scientific evidence for their safety or efficacy. The central concern around the use of CAM is that users might delay or forgo the use of conventional medicine potentially leading to severe health deteriorations. Homeopathy, one of the most widely used CAM, is particularly interesting as its proported mode of action is deemed impossible by current scientific knowledge. Moreover, multiple systematic reviews have come to the conclusion that homeopathy is no more effective than a placebo. Homeopathy proponents, however, claim that homeopathic remedies are an effective medical treatment, which could lead to misinformed consent of potential homeopathy users. This research project investigates how homeopathy users perceive homeopathy, especially with regards to its scientific basis. The central question addressed in this thesis is: do homeopathy users in New Zealand use homeopathic remedies because they believe the remedies to be scientifically proven to work? A sequential explanatory mixed methodology was used to answer this question, starting with collection and analysis of quantitative data via a survey. The survey results informed the design of follow-up semi- structured interviews with self-identified homeopathy users.

Logic allows us to analyze a piece of reasoning and determine whether it is correct or not. To use the technical terms, we determine whether the reasoning is valid or invalid. 4 LOGIC This lecture deals only with simple Boolean logic. Other sorts of mathematical logic, such as fuzzy logic, obey different rules. When people talk of logical arguments, though, they generally mean the type being described here. 5 What is an Argument? Hall2 Received: 4 April 2017 © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2018 Abstract The degree to which students hold epistemically unwarranted beliefs, beliefs not founded on reliable reasoning or credible data, can be used as a measure of critical thinking skills. To this end, college students (n = 806) were surveyed at the beginning and end of a semester. Epistemically unwarranted beliefs were pervasive. Several sections of a critical thinking class that specifcally and directly addressed pseudoscience, taught by three diferent instructors, produced a large and signifcant reduction of those beliefs, but research methods classes and unrelated general education classes did not. Most likely to be reduced were beliefs in health pseudoscience and extraordinary life forms. Conspiracy theories were least likely to change. Demographic variables (gender, race, SES) were asso- ciated with beliefs at pre-test, but not related to reduction of belief as a result of the class. Similarly, academic indicators that suggest intelligence were related to belief at pre-test, but not change. The one exception was that reduction of belief in health pseudoscience was widespread in all groups at pre-test, but showed the greatest reduction among students with indicators of academic aptitude and achievement. We conclude that the educational approach of directly addressing pseudoscience is efective for changing beliefs, not just increasing knowledge, and that it works for most college students, not just a select subset.

Such a benchmark can be challenging when addressing advocates of false knowledge: how can one portray their claims as reasonable and false both? One seems to risk abandoning rationality and slipping into relativism. In Invented Knowledge, Ron Fritze addresses the history of several pseudohistory and pseudoscience chestnuts: Atlantis, Velikovsky's World in Collision (and other catastrophists), von Däniken's Chariots of the Gods, Bernal's Black Athena, the historical claims of the Nation of Islam and the Christian Identity movement, various theories about the peopling of the Americas, and others. Fritze's accounts are well documented and informative. But they rarely render the thinking of the historical actors effectively. Rather, Fritze renders pseudohistory as willful irrationality (an early working title of the book was 'Irrational Science' (2)). Advancing such false claims shows one to be (in Fritze's monikers): naive, biased, prejudiced, cynical, gullible, undiscriminating, unscrupulous, undisciplined, unorthodox, irrational, spiritual, flawed, fallacious, sensationalistic, amusing, quirky, eccentric, crazy, bizarre and embarassing, pathetic, off-beat, audacious (or 'almost unimaginably audacious'), outrageous, rhetorically clever, wild, extremist, over-eager, obsessive, manic, nefarious, reprehensible, and contemptible, not to mention communist and obfuscating (pp.
