SRA Michael Mazzarella, US Air Force, Goodfellow AFB ,TX $8,345. - 2 February 24, 2019 Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church, Most of us civilians do not have a clear idea of the way in which our Catholic Church provides for the nearly two million Catholic people and their families who serve in our nation's armed forces. There is a separate Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA. This Archdiocese serves Catholics of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as peo- ple in Government Service outside the USA. It has its own archbishop—Archbishop Timothy Broglio. For many decades, under Cardinals Patrick Hayes and Francis Spellman and Terence Cooke, the spiritual needs of Catholics anywhere in the US military were the responsibility of the Archbishop of New York. In times of war and times of peace, it was a consistent great tradition that the Archbishop of New York left New York City after Mass on Christmas Day to visit the troops in distant parts of the world. But the job was really too big and too important to continue that way. By the time Cardinal Cooke's successor, Bishop John O'Connor of Scranton, was appointed as Archbishop of New York, it was appar- ent that a separate archdiocese and archbishop were needed to give proper care to the people in uniform. Thus the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA was created by Pope John Paul II to provide the Catholic Church’s full range of pastoral ministries and spiritual services to those in the US armed forces. Right now, this responsibility covers more than 220 installations in 29 countries. It also includes patients in 153 Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, and federal employees in 134 countries serving outside the boundaries of the USA. Numerically, the Archdiocese for the Military Services is responsible for more than 1.8 million Catholic people - men, women, and children. We were happy to learn in January that Pope Francis has appointed a New York priest—a recently retired Navy chaplain, Father William Muhm - as an Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA. Here is a statement from our Archbishop, Timothy Cardinal Dolan, about this appointment: His home Archdiocese of New York rejoices at the appointment of The Reverend William Muhm as auxiliary to the Archbishop for the Military Services, USA. While we had just gotten used to having Father Muhm back with us as a pastor, after decades of faithful priestly ministry as a Navy chaplain, it is a big part of the legacy of this archdiocese to share its treasures of priests, sisters, lay faithful, and gifts with the wider Church. Congratulations, Bishop-elect Muhm! You’re always at home here. Thanks for your love of God and country, for Jesus and His Church. You might be interested to know about the interesting path that God planned for Bishop-elect Muhm. Born in 1957 in Billings, Montana, he attended Colorado School of Mines, and served in the Navy for sev- eral years before applying to become a priest for our Archdiocese. He studied at St. Joseph Seminary, Dunwoodie, and was ordained a priest in St. Patrick's Cathedral in 1995. He even has Staten Island credentials: he served at Holy Family Church on Watchogue Rd. for several years before returning to the Navy as a Chaplain. His assignments included deployment with Marines in Iraq, chaplaincy at the U.S. Military Academy at Annapolis and with Marines at Camp Lejeune, N.C. He retired from the Navy last year with the rank of Captain, and was assigned to Most Precious Blood Parish in Walden, Orange County. The Mass for the Episcopal Consecration of Bishop-elect Muhm will be in one month, on Monday, March 25, the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord. This will take place at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. Please pray for him, for Pope Francis, for Cardinal Dolan, for Bishop O’Hara, and for all the successors of the Apostles. Msgr.
