Sing Fox to Me: An Investigation into the “Use” of Down syndrome in Both the Down Syndrome and Gothic Novel Why are characters with Down syndrome built into the scaffolding of the Down Syndrome novel rather than being represented as individuals with a clear agency and a legitimate, autonomous voice and point of view? And, how might the Australian Gothic novel open up new possibilities for practitioners of modern disability fiction? Sarah Jean Kanake Bachelor of Creative Industries (Creative Writing) First Class Honours, Creative Industries (Creative Writing) Submitted in fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Media, Entertainments and Creative Arts Creative Industries Faculty Queensland University of Technology 2014 Sing Fox to Me: An Investigation into the “use” of Down syndrome in both the Down Syndrome and Gothic Novel. Sing Fox to Me: An Investigation into the “use” of Down syndrome in both the Down Syndrome and Gothic Novel. ABSTRACT This project investigates the current borders around and within, what I have in this exegesis termed, “the Down Syndrome novel”, using a close reading analysis of literary texts containing characters with Down syndrome and contextualised by theoretical works drawn from both disability and literary theory. This practice-led thesis introduces and discusses select fictional characters with Down syndrome from numerous genres, revealing them as highly contained, or “boundaried”, spoken for, and generally used for narrative conflict rather than included as individuals with agency and a legitimate, autonomous voice and narrative point of view. The Down Syndrome novel is defined and positioned as sharing a similar space with colonial texts, as both impose “Otherness” and use this otherness to maintain possession, establish order and build boundaries.

When the first medical dramas were broadcasted, the main characters were good, peaceful, intelligent, competent, empathic, and successful physicians. One of the most famous, even outside the US, was Marcus Welby M.D. (1969-1976) of David Victor –which this year marks 50 years since its first emission. This depiction began to change in the mid-1990s. While maintaining the over positive image of medical doctors, TV series started to put more emphasis on their negative characteristics and difficulties in their interpersonal relationships, such asER (TV) by Michael Crichton (United States) and House MD (TV) by David Shore (United States). In these series, physicians were portrayed as arrogant, greedy, and adulterous, and their diagnostic and therapeutic errors were exposed. The last two series are The Good Doctor (TV) by David Shore (United States), with a resident of surgery with autism and Savant syndrome, and The Resident (TV) by Amy Holden Jones, Hayley Schore and Roshan Sethi (United States), where serious institutional problems appear.

  • Masters of Cyber-Religion
P a g e | 120 http://jrmdc.com Masters of Cyber-Religion: The Female Body as God’s “Interface” in the TV Series Caprica Jutta Wimmler European-University Viadrina Abstract The article proposes that the short-lived science fiction series Caprica (2009–2010) espoused a rather atypical ideology that was based on the prominence of women and femininity in the narrative. Through women, the series merged science and religion, body and mind, human and machine and established a moral code based on respect for those usually “othered” in the genre. The narrative accomplished this by consciously employing and then re-arranging western gender stereotypes, which led to the emergence of a specifically feminine approach to science that was, amongst other things, also religious. This combination had subversive potential because of the series’ premise that God actually exists and is actively involved in human/cyborg affairs. Women emerged as points of contact on behalf of this God who pitted them against rationalized and universalized male science. About the Author: Jutta Wimmler studied history and religious studies at the University of Graz and received her PhD in history in 2011. She is currently employed at the department of comparative European economic and social history at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder), Germany. • A Practical Approach to Film, Television, and Commercial Acting
p.i The Science and Art of Acting for the Camera The Science and Art of Acting for the Camera provides a precise yet practical approach to help unlock the mysteries of acting for film and television as well as commercials. Written by veteran actor, producer, director John Howard Swain, the book offers a clear-cut, no-nonsense technique that equips aspiring or working actors with the necessary skills to succeed on camera. The technique teaches you how to build multi- dimensional characters; construct truthful and exciting relationships; ignite stimulating emotions; craft a series of discoveries guaranteed to energize your work; and much, much more. The book also provides instruction for actors working in commercials—from slating, to the dreaded “tell us about yourself” interview, to nailing “the tag” and embracing the cliché—and provides sample copy for students to practice. John Howard Swain has coached a myriad of clients ranging from first-time performers to Emmy Award-winning actors, Supreme Court Justices and Fortune 500 executives. In addition to his New York stage credits he has also guest-starred in dozens of television’s most iconic shows, including such classics as Hill Street Blues to Law & Order: SVU. As a director he has staged over twenty plays, including such hits as That Championship Season, Veronica’s Room, and The Owl and the Pussycat. He has also directed four films: Whose Life, Uncommon, Stand-by, and the multi-award winning short, A Younger Man. Students from his program continue to work across the globe, and can be seen starring on Broadway, in television, and on film.
