    MOUNTAINS & HILLSTATIONS HILL STATION • A hill station is a town located at a higher elevation than the nearby plain which was used by foreign rulers as an escape from the summer heat as temperatures are cooler in high altitudes. MUNNAR ➢ Munnar the famed hill station is located in the Idukki district of the southwestern Indian state of Kerala. ➢ Munnar is situated in the Western Ghats range of mountains. ➢ The name Munnar is believed to mean "three rivers", referring to its location at the confluence of the Mudhirapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundaly rivers. ➢ The hill station had been the summer resort of the British Government during the colonial era. ➢ Munnar also has the highest peak in South India – Anamudi, which towers over 2695 meters ➢ Munnar is also known for Neelakurinji, a rare plant which flowers only once in twelve years. ➢ The Eravikulam National Park, Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary and tea plantations are its major attractions.     Executive summary In the morning hours of 26 December, 2004, huge seismic sea waves triggered by massive undersea earthquake in the Indian Ocean caused the death of many thousands of people, leaving tens of thousands homeless in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Maldives. Fishermen, tourists and people living on the coast were unprepared for the waves that rose upto 6 meters high throughout the Indian Ocean, Andaman Sea and Arabian Sea. The earthquake, had its epicenter 257 km south southwest of Banda Aceh in Sumatra, Indonesia. This was the most powerful earthquake experienced in the region during the last 40 years. 176 persons were killed in Kerala as tsunami waves rising over the Arabian Sea invaded the land, wreaking havoc and destruction in the coastal fishing hamlets in the southern districts of the state. This report presents the impact of tsunami on natural eco systems. The marine environment in the southwest coast between Thottapally and Muttam has been successfully affected as a result of the impact of Tsunami , as reflected by the following findings : The concentration of nutrients has been reduced at all transects just after tsunami. However, values gradually picked up in the period from January to May 2005. Primary productivity had been drastically reduced in the wake of tsunami, especially near Vizhinjam and Kolachel. This also has improved considerably evident from the samples collected in May 2005. There was a lowering of plankton species diversity just after tsunami period, in January 2005. The fish catch has been reduced subsequent to tsunami. This has shown considerable improvement now, as reported by the fishermen from that area.

Legend says that the Pandava princes, after crowning Parikshit as king of Hastinapura left on a pilgrimage. On arriving on the banks of river Pamba, each one is believed to have installed a tutelary image of Krishna; Thrichittatt Maha Vishnu Temple by Yudhishthira, Puliyur Mahavishnu Temple by Bheema, Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple by Arjuna, Thiruvanvandoor Mahavishnu Temple by Nakula and Thrikodithanam Mahavishnu Temple by Sahadeva. As per another legend, the temple is believed to be consecrated by sage Bhrigu. The temple is counted as one of the five temples built and worshipped by Pandavas from Mahabharata. The holy shrine dedicated to Lord Ayyappa is situated 914 metres above sea level amidst dense forests in the rugged terrains of the Western Ghats. Lord Ayyappa is looked upon as the guardian of mountains and there are several shrines dedicated to him all along the Western Ghats. The festivals here are the Mandala Pooja, Makara Vilakku (December/January) and Vishu Kani (April). The temple is also open for pooja on the first 5 days of every Malayalam month. The vehicles go only up to Pampa and the temple, which is situated 5 km away from Pampa, can be reached only by trekking. During the festival period there are frequent buses to this place from Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Kottayam.
