The first step in making the music of “A Suitable Boy,” was finding Kavita Seth in Bombay. Kavita is an extraordinary composer, and is also the singer of the songs we hear from Saeeda Bai, played by the legendary Tabu. We shaped these poems into ghazals that inform the spine of our story of seduction. They also comment on Saeeda’s status in the world of the early 1950s, as she for the first time, perhaps, falls in love with a younger man. I then turned to Alex Heffes, our brilliant composer from my previous film, “Queen of Katwe,” to mastermind the composition of what was to become an enormously kaleidoscopic score—based in India, incorporating the vast cultural range that forms our musical tradition. Alex’s worldly soul makes him both student and master of many traditions of music. Together we went to the unique sitar player and artiste, Anoushka Shankar. Anoushka’s music encompasses the ancient ragas of her father, Ravi Shankar, which brought beauty to so many films—particularly the films of Satyajit Ray. But the real gift was Anoushka’s music as the embodiment of Lata, our protagonist. Though Lata is firmly rooted within her family and her society, she has a beating heart of feistiness, independence and intelligence. A woman moving to her own rhythm. Our composing team was now ideal. The three of us approached several Indian artistes. Ashwin Srinivasan, the great flutist, plays throughout the soundtrack. Namit Das, who also acts as Haresh Khanna in “A Suitable Boy,” is an extraordinary singer who composed the boatman’s song as the lovers crossed the Ganges. Gagan Dev Riar, who also acts in “A Suitable Boy,” made a beautiful song of longing for the widow in the village scenes. We were lucky to get the great maestro, Ustad Shujaat Husain Khan, the son of the legendary Ustad Vilayat Khan, to perform Jhinjhoti and Khamaj on screen in two concerts. The syncretic nature between traditional Indian sound and the Islamic influences that had arrived through Iran, Turkey, and Pakistan— which was then called India—all of this confluence can be experienced in the music of “A Suitable Boy.” Photography Taha Ahmad. © Lookout Point Limited And for the other Anglicized side of life, we had the swing bands from Goa—the great nightlife jazz bands that used to play all over India, but especially in Calcutta. These are the sounds that the Chatterji and the Mehra families live with. And not to forget the Indian college version of performing Shakespeare, with its Shakespearean music! This was the tapestry that I aspired for. The extraordinary cultural and musical plurality that is our India, adding to the layers, to the class, to the idealism, and even to the raucous entertainment of our period. I salute all of the great artistes on this album who have given us their music, at their deepest and best, to form what is clearly a kaleidoscope of sub-continental sound. And a kiss for young Lata, who strives to find her voice, just as India is free to begin its own journey of self-discovery. Shukryaa.
