It’s quite frightening to watch, isn’t it? When Cue TODAY’S HEADLINES Card went up beside Thistlecrack six or eight [fences] out, I thought ‘goodness me’. It’s a very fickle world we live in. We’ve all seen NATIONAL HUNT RACING REVIEW Thistlecrack for the last few years, he’s had his biggest test and he’s a brilliant horse. When he was long he was standing off and Tom [Scudamore] was being a bit careful at the second last and he RIVALS CRACK AS THISTLE shortened up almost like a show jumper, he never touched a twig. PILES ON THE PRESSURE He’s got everything you’d want in a racehorse. Cue Card could have cried enough at the last, but he stuck his head out and finished Thistlecrack put his more experienced rivals to the sword in the second, so it’s brilliant.” Gr.1 King George VI Chase, the feature race on Boxing Day at Thistlecrack, who won the Gr.1 Long Walk, Gr.1 World and Gr.1 Kempton Park. The eight-year-old son of Kayf Tara, who was Liverpool Stayers’ Hurdles last season, is likely to cement his Gr.1 having only his fourth start over fences, treated the former Cheltenham Gold Cup claims in the Gr.2 Cotswold Chase at winners Silviniaco Conti (Dom Alco) and Cue Card (King’s Prestbury Park at the end of January, but Cue Card could head Theatre) to some daring fencing as he tracked the former before straight for the blue riband.

  • Cheltenham SUPPLEMENT
Cheltenham SUPPLEMENT Day One Tuesday 15 March Going: The ground for the first day is expected to ride generally good to soft, with good patches. The forecast for the next few days is for dry conditions, with cloud cover, and temperatures of around 10 degrees, so there is the prospect of watering towards the end of the week. 1.30: Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1) Min has been weak in the market over the last 36 hours or so, with 9/4 readily available and bookmakers expected to offer a variety of price boosts or concessions on this and later races. One of the better offers is from Paddy Power who, I believe, are offering to refund the stake on any race at Cheltenham if the favourite wins. My advice is to shop around for the best offer before placing your bet assuming, of course, that the various options are available to you. I am encouraged to see that Buveur D’Air, my ** bet from the Bulletin Book, has proved fairly solid in the market in the last couple of days. The five-year-old had been weak last week and over the weekend, but he is now 7.8 on Betfair and a top price of 13/2 with the bookmakers. Nicky Henderson will be hoping that the ground retains some moisture for him as he prefers cut underfoot. I loved the way he travelled and quickened to win at Newbury in November and he finished almost three lengths ahead of Altior when they ran behind Barters Hill in a Listed bumper at Newbury last season.

  • Sizing John a Golden First for Harrington Cont
SATURDAY, 18 MARCH, 2017 SIZING JOHN A GOLDEN RECORD EIGHT-FIGURE HORSE TOPS HK INTERNATIONAL SALE by Alan Carasso FIRST FOR HARRINGTON The annual Hong Kong International Sale is truly one of a kind, as it brings together 3-year-olds bred and sold in both hemispheres to be offered exclusively to members of the Hong Kong Jockey Club. On paper, the 2017 renewal of the auction, held under the lights in the parade ring at Sha Tin Racecourse Friday evening, would have plenty to do to compare with the previous get-together, which produced an HK$8.5-million topper and a true contender for this Sunday=s Hong Kong Derby in the form of Pakistan Star (Ger) (Shamardal). Only time will tell if the racetrack results match the sales sheets, but records tumbled Friday evening when a striking son of the late Hussonet eclipsed the eight-figure barrier when selling for HK$10.5 million (,1,095,462/US$1,352,222). The average of HK$4.51 million was 7.8% ahead of last year=s figure, while the median price jumped by 20%. Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Sizing John gets a congratulatory kiss AWe are very pleased with tonight=s results which clearly from jockey Robbie Power | Racing Post photo exhibited the enthusiasm of our owners and their recognition of the quality bloodstock sourced by the Club from the world=s top By Emma Berry sales,@ commented Anthony Kelly, Executive Director of Racing There was much pre-race publicity about Lizzie Kelly becoming Business and Operations for the HKJC.

SUPPLEMENT TO THE RACING CALENDAR MAY 25th 2017 1 ....................................................................................................................................................................................................... ANGLO-IRISH JUMP CLASSIFICATIONS 2016-2017 This is the eighteenth full Anglo-Irish Jump Classification. It classifies the best steeplechasers and hurdlers that were trained in either Britain or Ireland during the 2016-2017 season, or in France if that performance was achieved in Britain or Ireland. It is not a handicap but a retrospective measurement of best sustainable performances during the recent season so there may be differences from current handicap marks. The classifications are for all chasers and hurdlers down to a rating of 140. The steeplechasers are divided into distance categories of 2 miles to 2 miles 2.5 furlongs, 2 miles 3 furlongs to 2 miles 6.5 furlongs and 2 miles 7 furlongs plus. They are included in the list in which the handicappers believe they have put up their best performance. The hurdle categories are similar except that they are divided into two distances of 2 miles to 2 miles 2.5 furlongs and 2 miles 3 furlongs plus. There is a separate classification identifying Novices rated 140 and above. Juvenile Hurdlers are included in the Novice section. Horses trained in Ireland have * appended after their name.
