The study deals about the 1936 publication output of Indian Central Universities like University of Delhi (UOD), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), University of Allahabad (UOA), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) especially in the field of Physics. It examines the physics output of various universities under heading like document type distribution of publication, year wise growth of publication, to find out the most prolific authors of the universities & their ranking and to analyze the contribution of authors of central universities in International and National Journals. Keywords: Physics, Scholarly output, Central University, Web of Science. 1. INTRODUCTION Over the last three to five decade, India had widened growth and research output (in terms of publication output) in the field of Physics. A number of Universities and Research Laboratories were established for this purpose. Currently there are more than 44 Central Universities in India (www.ugc.ac.in [1]). Out of these 44 Central Universities, the research output of most of the universities in the field of Science and Technology (especially in the field of Physics) are less or not at all. Publications which are accessed through web or databases like Web of Science or Scopus are called scholarly publications. The research output of Universities in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh was taken for study during the period 2006- 34 International Journal of Library and Information Science (IJLIS), ISSN: 2277 – 3533 (Print), ISSN: 2277 – 3584 (Online) Volume 2, Issue 1, January- June 2013, © IAEME 2010.The research output in the field of physics is highest in University of Delhi followed by Banaras Hindu University. Scientometric study portrays the scientific productivity, research output, trends and emphasis of research in a discipline of any scholarly publications. 2. LITERATURE REVIEW A number of studies have been done during the last three decade to evaluate the research output/productivity of Central Universities in the field of Physics. Many Scholars have studied about the research output of physics in Indian central universities. A number of studies have been done by Gupta, B. M & Dhawan S. M to evaluate the research output in the field of Physics in India.(Dhawan, S. M 1988 [2], Dhawan, S. M., & Gupta, B. M 2007[3], Gupta, B. M., & Dhawan, S. M. 2009[4] etc). Pichappan, P studied about the core journals of science stream in 1995 [5]. Barun, T et al 1994 [6], Bhattacharya, S, Singh, S. P. & Sudhakar, P 1997 [7] and Bonilla Calero, A I 2007 [8] etc) studied about the productivity in the field of physics in terms of author productivity, literature growth & subject distributions and their citations. Nagpaul, P. S. in 1995 studied about the contribution of Indian Universities in the science stream [9].In 2010, Husain, S and Mustaq, M studied about the ranking of Indian Central Universities in science and technology field [10]. 3. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY The major objectives of the present study during the period 2006-2010 are: To find out document type distribution of publications To study the year wise distribution of the publications To indicate top 10 prolific authors in terms of productivity count To find out source titles in terms of no. of publications 4. METHODOLOGY The data presented in this paper have been accessed from Web of Science published by Thomson Scientific. The basic data relating to total publications during 2006-2010, has been collected in the month of February 2013 using Web of Science. The search strategy used for collecting data for Banaras Hindu University was as follows: “Organization Name =Banaras Hindu Univ.” and “Year Published=2006-2010”. Further these search was refined by “Research Area=Physics”. The same strategy was used to collect data for other central universities only by changing name of the university. All the searched results were saved in text files and then imported into Micro Soft-Excel to organize, analyze and generate the tables, graphs and charts for final study. 5. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Table 1 shows total publication output and physics output by the various Indian Universities during the period 2006-2010.The total publication output of these five central universities viz Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), University of Delhi (UOD), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and University of Allahabad (UOA) was 11857 during the period 2006-2010. 35 International Journal of Library and Information Science (IJLIS), ISSN: 2277 – 3533 (Print), ISSN: 2277 – 3584 (Online) Volume 2, Issue 1, January- June 2013, © IAEME Table 1 Publication share and rank of Indian Central Universities in the field of physics output Total Sl.
