Senate & House of Representatives, in General Court assembled, As we, the Undersigned, Proprietors & Inhabitants of the District of Marshpee, are informed, that request is made to you, by part of our people to alter the Parsonage, Meeting House, &c– We wish, respectfully to raize our voice against it, in your hearing. We believe it will do most good as it now is. Our Fathers, being as capable of discerning what is good as any of us, solemnly set this off for a good end!– The Committee of your Hon. Body, who looked into our affairs, and, as we thought, settled them, say of this Property, that, "the former Acts respecting it, would operate as a dedication of it, with which it would be inexpedient for the Legislature to interfere," and, we hope your Honours are still of the same mind. We know not what pretence our Opposites have set forth, but we assure your Honours, that if this property goes back to Commons, it will soon be over consumed, & a very few, will feel the benefit–or–if it is once divided, there will be no end to the like doings,– & we shall be left without a provision for Religious Means. We declare our Satisfaction with what our Fathers have done, and wish that our Teacher be left to the un- disturbed use of his privileges. STUDIES IN MALACHI No. 6 February 23, 2003 Review Tonight we begin our study of the third of Malachi’s six disputations, or stylized conversations between God and his people. In each case the prophet is exposing some way in which Israel is being unfaithful to the Lord and so bringing down upon herself the threat of God’s judgment. The first disputation concerned unfaithful and half-hearted worship. The second concerned the infidelity of the priests who were not only allowing the people to worship God in a disobedient and irreverent way, but were actually encouraging them in their worldliness. Now comes the third disputation which concerns marital unfaithfulness among the people of God. We are going to familiarize ourselves with the text tonight and with one problem of translation and then, next Lord’s Day evening, God willing, we will take up the main burden of Malachi’s message. Text Comment v.10 In the third disputation, Malachi returns to the sins of the people in general. The same format is followed that we have seen in the previous disputations: The Lord asserts through his prophet that his people have violated the covenant (vv. 10-13); the people’s questioning reply (v. 14a); the Lord’s response (v. 14b); and the implication or application (vv. 15-16). Malachi begins by reminding the people of their special relationship to God. He is their father, their only father. That means that Israel must live in obedience to God. But, it also may imply several things. Fathers had much to do with arranging marriages in that culture and so disobedience to the Lord in the matter of choosing a marriage partner would be a serious violation of filial trust and duty. -

The Table of the Lord: Paul’s Eucharistic Use of Malachi in 1 Corinthians 10:21 Jon R. Jordan | [email protected] | Faculty, Coram Deo Academy Abstract Paul is alone among New Testament authors in using LXX Malachi’s τραέζης κυρίου (trapeza kyriou, table of the Lord). In bringing his lengthy section on Christian freedom to a close, Paul addresses a specific concern of the Corinthian church: the eating of meat sacrificed to pagan idols. In 1 Cor 10:14–22 we see Paul use τρα$έ&'( )*"ίο* and other Eucharistic language to frame the celebration of the Lord’s Supper as the ideal counter-example to this Corinthian practice. Why, in this setting, would Paul make use of Malachi’s phrase? What does !"#$%&'( )*"ίο* communicate to Paul’s audience that other Eucharistic language can not? This paper will propose that Paul’s use of Malachi’s !"#$έ&'( )*"ίο* (trapez-s kyriou) allows him to speak of the Eucharist in sacrificial terms and provides later Christian writers a New Testament precedent for using Malachi in a Eucharistic sense. It will be argued (1) that Paul certainly has Malachi’s disputation with the Levitical priest in mind when he uses !"#$έ&'( )*"ίο* (trapez-s kyriou) in 1 Cor 10:21, (2) that the context of Malachi’s own use of !"#$έ&'( )*"ίο* (trapez-s kyriou) provides a vision of a future, sacrificial worship of Yahweh by “the nations,” and (3) that Paul intends for these sacrificial overtones to be heard in his use of the Eucharist as a counter-example to the consummation of idol meat. -

Abigail, Wife Of King David ‘David lived with Achish, king of Gath. David, his servants and every man with his household. David with his two wives; Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail the Carmelitess, widow of Nabal’ (1 Samuel 27:3). Abigail seemed to have been a very wise woman. She had lived for years with a violent, alcoholic, foolish husband named Nabal. After Nabal’s death, David proposed to Abigail. She was David’s second wife. His first wife was Michal, daughter of King Saul. ‘The sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi and Malchishua. His two daughters were Merab, and the name of the younger, Michal (1 Samuel 14:49). ‘Saul gave David, Michal his daughter for his wife’ (1 Samuel 18:27). Michal never had any children. ‘Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death’ (2 Samuel 6:23). Abigail had two sons to David, Chileab and Daniel. ‘To David were sons born in Hebron … Chileab, born of Abigail the Carmelite, widow of Nabal‘ (2 Samuel 3:2 & 3) … Daniel born of Abigail the Carmelitess’ (1 Chronicles 3:1). The wisdom of Abigail is almost breathtaking. She saved the whole of Israel by her quick thinking. ‘There was a very wealthy man named Nabal in Maon whose possessions were in Carmel. He had three thousand sheep, a thousand goats and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel. The name of the man was Nabal and his wife Abigail. Abigail was a woman of wisdom and was very beautiful, but Nabal of the house of Caleb, was churlish and evil in all his works. -

Although I agree that issues related to chaos and order are central to the book, the assumption that any discussion of chaos and order must be related to combat mythology does not stand up to scrutiny. Order and chaos, I maintain, are broader terms. I define them as “how the world ought to be,” and “how the world ought not to be,” respectively. -
