The facility includes the first international track (400 meters) to have been built in theUnited States. The track itself is a Chevron 440 surface, possibly themost resilient surface ever produced. The entire layout of Patrick Wayne Valley Field is one of the nation's most imaginative and modern in terms of surface andprovision for electronic aids. The track was named in the memory of Patrick Wayne Valley, a former student-athlete who died in 1969. His father, Wayne Valley, was also an Oregon State graduate who made numerouscontributions to the OSU athletic program. Wayne Valley was a highly successful businessmanin the San Francisco Bay Area. At one time he was the principal owner of the Oakland Raiders of the NFL. Patrick Wayne Valley was a lineman on the OSU football team from 1964 to 1966 and a member of the 1964 Rose Bowl squad.
