  • Multi-Million Pound Hove Gardens Redevelopment Scheme Being Revived Neil Vowles / the Argus Friday 13 November 2015
Multi-million pound Hove Gardens redevelopment scheme being revived Neil Vowles / The Argus Friday 13 November 2015 Retrieved from http://www.theargus.co.uk/news/14029374.Multi_million_pound_ Hove_Gardens_redevelopment_scheme_being_revived/ on 14th November 2015 13:30 An artist's impression of the new development proposed for Conway Street in Hove by Matsim Properties PLANS for a new multi-million pound development of nearly 200 homes, dozens of offices and shops have been revealed. Matsim Properties have unveiled proposals for the transformation of industrial units in the heart of Hove into high-rise modern housing, offices and retail space. The Sussex-based firm hope the plans could be the beginning of a much larger development to revive a tired-looking section of the city. The company’s Hove Square project, which proposed office space for 1,250 jobs, a nine-screen Vue cinema, a supermarket and 380 homes collapsed in 2012. The new Hove Gardens project in Conway Street would see the demolition of three industrial units to be replaced, providing 178 apartments, 21,500 sq ft of "employment space" and 2,500 sq ft of small flexible use space at ground level with room for expansion for start ups and small businesses. Apartment blocks rising up to 15 storeys in height would be finished with rooftop allotments, communal gardens and potential for a pop-up bar and cinema. Homes would vary between one to three bedrooms and could be a mixture of owner occupied, shared ownership and private renting. A public consultation on the plan is scheduled for next Saturday and plans could be sitting on council officers’ desks by December.

  • East Sussex Record Office Report of the County Archivist April 2008 to March 2009 Introduction
eastsussex.gov.uk East Sussex Record Office Report of the County Archivist April 2008 to March 2009 Introduction The year was again dominated by efforts towards achieving The Keep, the new Historical Resource Centre, but the core work of the Record Office continued more busily than ever and there was much of which to be proud. In July 2008 we took in our ten-thousandth accession, something of a milestone in the office’s own history of almost 60 years. An application to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for £4.9million towards the costs of The Keep was submitted by the Record Office on behalf of the capital partners, East Sussex County Council, Brighton & Hove City Council and the University of Sussex, in September. This represented around 20% of the anticipated costs of the building, since the partners remain committed to find the remainder. In December we learned our fate: that we had been unsuccessful. Feedback from the HLF indicated that ours had been an exemplary application, and one which they would have liked to have supported but, in a year when the effect of diverting HLF money to the Olympics was being felt, it was thought necessary to give precedence to some very high-profile projects. We were, of course, disappointed, but determined not to be deterred, and the partners agreed to pursue ways forward within the existing funding. Because it would further hold up the project, adding to inflation costs, but give no guarantee of success, we decided not to re-apply to the HLF, and by the end of the financial year were beginning to look at options for a less expensive building.

About QueenSpark Books QueenSpark Books was founded in 1972 as part of a campaign to save the historic Royal Spa in Brighton's Queen's Park from being converted to a casino. The campaign was successful and it inspired participants to start collecting memories of people living in Brighton and Hove to preserve for future generations. More than one hundred books later, as part of our 45th anniversary celebrations, we are making the original texts of many of our out-of-print books available for the first time in many years. About this book Barbara Chapman was born in Brighton on a snowy Boxing Day in 1927. In this 1994 autobiography, she reminisces about her early childhood; focusing on her memories of home and school, and the effects of the Second World War on herself, her family, and the community. Barbara shares her experiences of working life in the Brighton area; telling stories of her jobs, including her work as a waitress and a telephonist at the Old Ship Hotel, and the hardship, restrictions and freedoms of life during wartime. She recollects vividly a bygone era, narrating her life history with honesty, humour and charm and invoking for the reader a very personal impression of the city during the 1930s and 1940s.
