One enormous orphanhood, One enormous emptiness. ‘At the Crossroads’ by Yu Baltrushaitis 2 PART I SETTING: The food court of a shopping mall. Everything is artificial and plastic. In each part of the play, there are cliques of mannequins lounging in various poses—eating, walking, shopping, talking on the cell phone, etc. Gradually, the mannequins begin to appear more and more like MIMI. This transformation should be subtle, until, by the end of the play, everyone is absolutely identical. AT RISE: MIMI and BEBE are seated at a café table. MIMI and BEBE are best friends. It should be difficult to determine if they are adolescents or adults. Their costumes should be outrageous, cutting-edge eccentric, but bordering on bad taste. MIMI is deeply troubled, suffering from a severe anxiety attack. She is downcast and haggard, as if she hasn’t slept in several days. BEBE, on the other hand, is bright and chipper and eagerly browses through her magazine. The sterile sound of muzak occupies the air. BEBE Clooney or Cruise? MIMI Clooney. • Viola Davis's Call to Adventure
PROFILES DECEMBER 19 & 26, 2016 ISSUE VIOLA DAVIS’S CALL TO ADVENTURE How the star of “Fences” and “How to Get Away with Murder” got away from her difficult past. By John Lahr “I had a call to adventure, a call to live life bigger than myself,” Davis said. Photograph by Awol Erizku for The New Yorker n January 25, 2009, a jubilant Meryl Streep stood before a gala crowd at the O Screen Actors Guild Awards, in Los Angeles, having just won an award for her role in “Doubt,” the flm adaptation of John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize- winning play about sexual abuse, race, and the Catholic Church. Clutching her statuette, Streep gave a shout-out to the rest of the cast. When she got to Viola Davis—who had earned her frst Academy Award nomination for her performance as the mother of an African-American boy a priest is accused of abusing—Streep saluted her colleague as “gigantically gifted,” then threw up her hands. “My God!” she said. “Somebody give her a movie!” The industry seems to have listened. Davis—“a newcomer at forty-fve,” as Streep later joked—has made twenty-one flms since then. Not all her roles have been large or central to the narrative arc, but, as Aibileen Clark, the maid who helps expose the folly of the white Mississippi matrons she serves, in “The Help”(2011), she was a popular success and gained a second Academy Award nomination. “No one had ever akst me what it felt like to be me,” Aibileen says at the end of the flm.

  • '2009 MTV Movie Awards' Honors Ben Stiller with 'MTV Generation Award'
'2009 MTV Movie Awards' Honors Ben Stiller With 'MTV Generation Award' Premiering LIVE Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 9pm ET/8pm CT From The Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, CA SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 22 -- The 2009 MTV Movie Awards pays tribute to Ben Stiller with the coveted "MTV Generation Award" for his amazing contribution to Hollywood and for entertaining the MTV audience for years. From generation to generation, Ben Stiller has kept fans rolling with laughter since bursting onto the scene in Reality Bites and his early film roles and cult classics such as There's Something About Mary, Meet the Parents, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Tropic Thunder and now this summer's eagerly anticipated Night at the Museum: Battle at the Smithsonian in theaters May 22, 2009. The "MTV Generation Award" is the MTV Movie Awards' highest honor, acknowledging an actor who has captured the attention of the MTV audience throughout his or her career. Past recipients include Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, Tom Cruise and Jim Carrey. Hosted by Andy Samberg, the 2009 MTV Movie Awards will be broadcast LIVE from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, CA on Sunday, May 31st at 9p.m. ET/8p.m. CT. "From The Royal Tenenbaums to Zoolander, Ben is a comedic chameleon, able to make the leap between drama and full-out comedy while maintaining his own unique brand of subversive humor," said Van Toffler, President of MTV Networks Music/Logo/Film Group. "That versatility and talent has earned him legions of devoted fans over the years which makes him a perfect recipient for the 'MTV Generation Award.' Whether it's fighting a monkey in a museum or licking a decapitated head, nothing is ever off-limits for him and that's the type of warped creative vision and commitment MTV loves to reward." "I am honored to be getting the 'Generation Award,'" said Ben Stiller.

  • Affective Agency in Viola Davis's Award Speeches
Yearbook of the Poznań Linguistic Meeting 6 (2020), pp. 159–181 DOI: 10.2478/yplm-2020-0009 To be sentimental, powerful, and Black: Affective agency in Viola Davis’s award speeches Agata Janicka Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań [email protected] Abstract This article considers how the long-standing American cultural tradition of sentimen- tality and its affective power can be discursively utilized by contemporary Black women in the public contexts. Using the concept of sentimental political storytelling as discussed by Rebecca Wanzo, I analyze three award speeches given by Viola Davis – a popular and acclaimed African American actress whose speeches generate signifi- cant public and media attention. Framing Davis’s speeches within the Black feminist epistemology, I draw on the conventions of sentimental storytelling proposed by Wanzo to argue that Davis is an example of a Black woman skilfully using sentimen- tality to gain affective agency and mobilize sympathy from mainstream public while at the same time narrativizing African Americans’ lived experiences to have their hu- manity and their struggle recognized today. Given the continued prioritization of White female suffering in the American media over stories of Black women’s struggle, the ways in which Black women can discursively utilize sentimentality to gain affective agency and negotiate self-definition in interactional public contexts is of significant sociolinguistic interest. Keywords: African American women; sentimentality; affective agency; discourse; media. 0. Introduction Sentimentality holds a major potential for sociolinguistic studies of language. Inherently emotional, sentimentality has had a long-lasting and conspicuous role in the American literary history, and it has been the object of considerable attention in literary criticism (Howard 1999).

  • Actors Anonymous of Legion the Watching from Thrill Different a Be Will That Me, for But, Audience
NOTES FROM THE DREAM FACTORY BY TOM ROSTON he first met when they were both in the 2002 Broadway play Burn This. And although we’re talking about Burrell, Norton might as well be speaking about his own brilliant debut in 1996’s Primal Fear, when he, seemingly out of nowhere, rocketed to recognition. “It is a very particular kind of excitement,” he says. “There is no sense of the artifice. That’s what’s really thrilling.” I am always hoping for pure moments when I watch a movie: those times when my disbelief is so entirely suspended that I forget that I’m watching one. Going into a theater, I often feel overwhelmed with baggage—who the main actor slept with last week, how the director mortgaged his house to get the movie made, and how the production designer only used three shades of green on the set. It even bugs me that once I like a director or an actor, I expect something from him or her, and so the work has an added layer of self-consciousness. When the lights go down, it’s hard to wash the slate entirely clean and just watch. That’s why my eyes tend to drift toward the margins for something surprising. And, often, I see it in an actor whom I know nothing about, and who brings something deeper and richer to his character even though he may have just two minutes of screen time. This may seem random (and that’s the point), but do you remember in the Will Smith movie Hitch, which I just caught on DVD, that there’s this misogynist asshole who is, well, such an asshole? Actor Jeffrey Donovan gets it just right.
