A LIFE-CHANGING MOMENT

Congratulations on reaching this milestone day! I know you’ve worked hard for this moment, and now I hope you’ll take time to celebrate and savor your accomplishments.

Earning a college degree requires intellectual curiosity, effort, and self-sacrifice—traits that, beyond your academic studies, will open doors to now unimagined opportunities as you move on to the next chapter in your life.

Attaining success requires teamwork as well. You and your immediate team—your family, your friends, your professors—are immensely proud, as am I, of your achievements.

After you celebrate today’s festivities, my fervent hope is that you’ll cherish your moments at Washington State and resolve to stay connected to the Cougar family. As you well know by now, once a Coug, always a Coug. You can count on Cougs to support you throughout your professional and personal journey.

I’m delighted to have the opportunity to share this day with you. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

Go Cougs!

Kirk H. Schulz, President Washington State University

BIOGRAPHY Kirk Schulz became the 11th president of Washington State University and a tenured professor in the Gene and Linda Voiland School of Chemical Engineering in June 2016. Prior to joining WSU, he served seven years as president of Kansas State University, where he guided KSU to a number of significant achievements in research, enrollment, and fundraising. During nine years at Mississippi State University, Dr. Schulz served in a variety of administrative roles, including vice president for research and economic development. He also previously was a faculty member in the chemical engineering department at Michigan Technological University and the University of North Dakota. President Schulz chairs the NCAA board of governors, the NCAA’s highest-ranking committee. He is active in several professional societies, including the American Institute for Chemical Engineering (AICE) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). He is a fellow in both the ASEE and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Judi McDonald PROFESSOR OF MATHEMATICS CHAIR OF THE WSU FACULTY SENATE

Dear Graduates,

On behalf of the faculty at Washington State University, I want to congratulate you on attaining your degree. Beyond any multiple choice answer or numerical grade point, you have proven yourselves as thinkers, seekers, and creators of the very essence of innovation and knowledge. We are privileged to have had you in our classrooms, labs, and studios. Surpassing the strenuousness of student life and learning how to learn has adapted you into intellectuals who can reach higher than you thought possible and who can realize the unimaginable. Working with talented, passionate, and tenacious individuals such as yourselves has been an honor. As you step into the world of new possibilities, leap with courageousness and explore with curiosity.

The theory of six degrees of separation suggests that there are at most six social network steps between any two people on the planet. The distance between you and your dreams is not as far as it may seem and helpful Cougs will lend a hand along the way. Dream big and reach far, but never hesitate to take advantage of the best opportunities that present themselves at the moment.

The theory of three degrees of influence suggests that not only are people influenced by their peers, but also by the people who influence their peers, and so on, with the strongest influences coming from up to three steps away. Take with you the hand-picked best of the new ideas and attitudes you have been exposed to on our campuses, for it is the intangible that is your greatest asset in the years to come. As you emerge into the world as WSU alumni, represent us with a fusion of grace and passion. Look out for your fellow Cougs, as well as the people around you. Remember that your influence goes well beyond that which is immediately before your eyes.

My first dean advised “Do good work—the rest will follow,” and I have frequently used this advice when deciding how to spend my time and energy. Even though you are graduating, remember to keep the kindle of curiosity flaming. Find and follow that which entices you to passion. Don’t be afraid to leave your comfort zone. When blunders block your path, seek ways to morph your ideas into new and unexpected solutions, or change paths. The way ahead has many opportunities and challenges.

Attaining your degree is a special accomplishment that is yours for life. Use it well.

Sincerely,

Judi McDonald Chair of the Washington State University Senate Professor of Mathematics

5 WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY

Brigitta Jozefowski CHAIR, ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONAL ADVISORY COUNCIL

Dear WSU Graduates,

It is with great honor that I write to you this day, a day that will be forever in your heart. Today, you join an elite group of individuals who will forever remember the rolling hills of the Palouse, the slow crawl of the combines, the endless cheering of our athletes, and who will forge ahead and shape this world.

To be a Coug isn’t just a word, it isn’t just a college student, it is a family. A family of Cougs that welcome you into this new and exciting journey. Congratulations on your accomplishments these past years that led you to your commencement day. The Administrative Professional staff congratulate you on your commencement. The driving motivation in our work – and one that gives all of us great satisfaction – is your success. You have earned this moment, the effort you put into your studies, the late hours studying and finishing projects, the life-long friends you have made and the faculty that have inspired you. We are blessed and honored to have helped you and your fellow Cougars achieve your success.

It is customary to leave a graduate with a quote to ponder. Our 66th Secretary of State, Dr. Condoleezza Rice, stated, “Remain optimistic and always try to serve others as well as the goals for freedom, peace, and justice”. As you leave here today, remember Dr. Rice’s words as you embrace your new beginning. Go forth as a Coug ready to serve others and embrace your responsibility to enact change and transform the world for the better. We look forward to great things from you.

On behalf of the Administrative Professional Advisory Council, I congratulate your accomplishments!

Go Cougs!

COMMENCEMENT 2017

Washington State University cordially welcomes all who have come to the Pullman campus for the 17th annual fall Commencement to honor the graduating class of 2017. To class members, the Class of 2017, the University would like to acknowledge your accomplishments and congratulate you all.

Commencement is the special occasion where students are recognized for their academic achievements. These achievements are reflected in their transcript, an official document certifying the completion of academic requirements. The culmination of a student’s success at WSU comes with the arrival of their diploma, which is mailed after the ceremony.

The first WSU Commencement ceremony, held on June 24, 1897, recognized a total of eight students. Today we honor more than 800 students from varying states, U.S. territories, and countries.

WSU enrolls 30,614 students statewide. This includes 17,646 undergraduates and 2,640 graduate and professional students learning at the Pullman campus, and 7,631 undergraduates and 2,697 graduate and professional students at the other campus locations of Everett, Spokane, Tri-Cities, Vancouver, and the Global Campus (online). WSU is also privileged to support 10,340 first generation college students in their academic journey. Washington State University is proud of a growing family of Cougar alumni and is honored to celebrate their achievements.

DISCLAIMER

The names of the degree recipients are announced in random order as they approach the readers. Students will be viewed on big screens as their names are read.

Names in the Fall 2017 Commencement program include August 2017 degree candidates and December 2017 degree candidates who met the application deadline.

Appearance of a name in this program is presumptive evidence of graduation and graduation honors, but it must not in any sense be regarded as conclusive. Notation on the university transcript remains the official testimony of degree possession.

The program is not a listing of those attending the ceremony.

Created in 1985, the two-foot-long, nine-pound scepter is cast in silver and bronze and features a globe atop a laurel branch, wrapped in a silver ribbon and inscribed “Washington State University.” According to designer and craftsman Tim Doebler of WSU’s Department of Fine Arts, “the globe represents the universality of education and the quest for knowledge. Laurel crowns were presented to academicians by the ancient Greeks.”

The anvil is a symbol of forging and molding education, rather than forcing it upon students.
