A STANLEY Road house was gutted by fire last night and the two men who lived there lost all possessions inside. The cause of the fire was yet to be determined although a fire investigator said it was not initially being treated as suspicious. A police scene guard was put in place overnight until an investigation started this morning. Fire and Emergency NZ received multiple 111 calls about the blaze at the house opposite Gisborne Boys’ High School at around 8pm. Three appliances were sent to the fire. Police were first to arrive at the house and an officer spoken to said the house was fully on fire when they got there. “We made inquiries and neighbours told us there was no one home,” he said. “We evacuated the residents from surrounding properties as a precaution.” Station Officer Chris Grimson led the first fire crew to arrive. “The house was well involved when we pulled up, with flames coming out of all the windows. “We were advised the two men who lived there were both away at work when it started. ‘We couldn’t get inside the house because the fire had such a hold, so we concentrated on an external attack and on protecting the houses on either side.” couple of garden hoses. “They’ve lost all their household SO Grimson said the heat blistered the “I heard the fire starting,” she said. “I possessions. paint of a house next door, cracked some heard these popping noises coming from “At this stage it’s not clear exactly windows and melted plastic guttering. next door, went to investigate and saw where in the house the fire started, “There was also some charring around flames coming out the kitchen window,” though we believe it was at the rear on a window area. she said. the left-hand side. “The house on the other side was “I grabbed my phone, called 111 and “The cause has yet to be determined affected by radiant heat, too, but to got the hoses started.
