Romania Page 1 of 13 Romania International Religious Freedom Report 2005 Released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor The Constitution provides for freedom of religion; while the Government generally respects this right in practice, some restrictions adversely affect religious freedom, and several minority religious groups continued to claim credibly that low-level government officials impeded their efforts at proselytizing and interfered with other religious activities. There was no overall change in the status of respect for religious freedom during the period covered by this report. The Government continues to differentiate between recognized and unrecognized religions, and registration and recognition requirements still posed obstacles to minority religions. The Government did not adopt a new law regulating religions; however, a draft law on religious freedom is under debate by the State Secretariat for Religious Denominations and the recognized religions. Unrecognized religions have not been given any role or say in the debate. The Government has not passed legislation to return to the Greek Catholic community the churches and church property transferred by the communists to the Orthodox Church in 1948, nor has it shown any inclination to do so. An international commission headed by Nobel Prize Laureate Elie Wiesel, set up in 2003 to study the Holocaust in Romania, presented its report, conclusions, and recommendations in November 2004, and state authorities acknowledged publicly the occurrence of the Holocaust in the country. In October 2004, the country commemorated its first annual Holocaust Remembrance Day with the Government organizing public events for the commemoration. The Government also took some steps towards introducing the issue of the Holocaust in the country in school curricula.

Specific geological, hydrogeological and hydrochemical conditions of the above mentioned occurrences of mineral water are the reasons for treated them as parts of a common hydrogeological structure, denoted as Dolna Banya thermal water basin. Scope and boundaries of the basin are delineated. A description of individual mineral water occurrences is presented. The discharge of each of them is assessed on actual measurements and observations of discharge regime. The total outflow of mineral water from the occurrences of the Dolna Banya thermal water basin recently amounts to 53 l/s. The hydrochemical characteristic of mineral waters is presented as well as regularities in the distribution of composition and temperature. A conceptual computer model of the Dolna Banya thermal water basin is compiled and it is used for determining the cathcment areas for each of the mineral water occurrences. The model confirms hydraulic connection between specific parts of the basin and in the meanwhile studies the determination of Kostenets occurrence of mineral water as an autonomous part of the basin.

  • Consideraţii Litostratigrafice Şi Hidrogeologice Privind
ANALELE ŞTIINŢIFICE ALE UNIVERSITĂŢII ”AL. I. CUZA“ IAŞI Geologie. Tomul LI, 2005 LITHOSTRATIGRAPHIC AND HYDROGEOLOGIC CONSIDERATIONS REGARDING PLIOCENE-QUATERNARY DEPOSITS FROM SFANTU GHEORGHE AND TARGU SECUIESC SEDIMENTARY DEPRESSIONS, ROMANIA RODICA MACALEŢ, EMIL RADU, RADU CATALINA1 SUMMARY The paper presents some lithostratigraphic and hydrogeologic considerations of Neogene and Quaternary deposits from Sfântu Gheorghe and Târgu Secuiesc depressions, based on information from recent drilling programme. Several hydrogeological cross-sections are presented here to support the geological interpretation and tectonic evolution of the Pliocene-Quaternary deposits in the area. Key words: lithostratigraphy, hydrogeology, Sfântu Gheorghe depression, Târgu Secuiesc depression, groundwater, aquifer strata. INTRODUCTION Starting from Pliocene, the tectonic evolution of the Sfântu Gheorghe and Târgu Secuiesc depressions was favourable for developement of molasse deposits, with high lithological variability and conditions for lignite layers accumulation. This paper is based on new information obtained from water bores, geological drillholes and also from drillholes mainly drilled to assess the potential for the presence of new lignite layers in the area, with emphasis on geology and faunal content of the Pliocene and Quaternary sediments. A number of drillholes from Sfantu Gheorghe and Targu Secuiesc depressions have been investigated by the author. The results are present using several cross-sections and synthetic lithostratigraphic columns, which provide a new base to interpret the geology of the area as well as the groundwater potential. 139 Rodica Macaleţ, Emil Radu, Cătălina Radu GENERAL GEOLOGY AND GEOMORPHOLOGY OF THE AREA Based on their geomorphology, Sfântu Gheorghe and Târgu Secuiesc depressions are considered to be part of the Braşov Basin, and are developed on its north-eastern side.
