Her repertoire includes singing the national anthem at the Western Conference basketball semifinals and at Game 2 of the NBA Western Conference First Round in 2009. She released a country single in 2012 called How I Feel. Watch: Haley sing 'True Colors' Matt Giraud, a fifth place finalist on the 2008 season of American Idol, was the first recipient of the notorious Judges' Save. He continues to tour the world, most recently playing with some of the top symphonies in America. Matt has also found success on iTunes with his cover of You Don't Know Me, a duet with Anna Wilson, hitting number 1 on the iTunes Jazz Chart in 2010.     LaKisha Jones Best known to millions of TV viewers as a top four finalist during the 2007 season of “American Idol,” LaKisha Jones is ready to reclaim center stage in music, theatre and television. Her last album, “So Glad I’m Me” was full of Jones’ expressive, full-bodied and arresting vocals, the same voice that electrified “American Idol” viewers with the Dreamgirls showstopper “And I Am Telling You” and later the Broadway stage in the Oprah Winfrey produced, Tony Award-winning musical, The Color Purple. Having worked with hit-making songwriters and producers including Tony Nicholas (Patti LaBelle, Luther Van- dross), Ro & Sauce (Brandy, Ne-Yo) and Greg Curtis (Keyshia Cole, Yolanda Adams), Jones’ album featured a spirited mix of R&B and soul. A few noteworthy songs included the single “Same Song,” penned by award-win- ning songwriter Dianne Warren, Whitney Houston’s “You Give Good Love,” the gospel song “Just As I Am,” and Jones’ soaring ballad to her daughter, “Beautiful Girl.” She auditioned for “American Idol” once before in 2003 but didn’t make the cut. Hear the name and most will immediately think of Patti LaBelle, diva supreme, but the story is far more profound than the connection suggests. Over the course of 16 years together, Nona Hendryx, Sarah Dash, and Patti LaBelle created a musical legacy unlike any other group before or since. Patti’s incredible voice led the way, undoubtedly. But it was Sarah Dash’s sweet soaring soprano, the deep resonance of Nona Hendryx’s voice and lyrical imagination, and the utopian vision of manager Vicki Wickham that would ultimately result in the creation of the Labellian cosmology--a map of sonic starlight. In 1962, Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles were a traditional girl group with a few minor hits. Ten years later, they dropped the girl group tropes and became Labelle, reinventing the role of Black women in popular music as bona fide rock stars in 1974. The torque accelerating their ascendancy was a song called “Lady Marmalade.” Co-written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan, “Lady Marmalade” is the story of a Creole sex worker strutting a solicitation--”Voulez vous coucher avec moi, ce soir?”--a phrase that became a French-language primer for every American in love with pop music. Any record company trepidation about presenting this brazen shout-out for Black women’s sexual agency to the listening world was extinguished by the undeniable brilliance of the recording. The song might not have been written by Labelle, but their delivery made it a worldwide sensation.

Indeed, they had become punch lines in comedyAmerican routines: Idol from Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert complaining that it took too long to determine the next American Idol (in a gag that had audiences assuming he was referring to the next U.S. president) to ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel quipping that, after watching the vice presidential debate during the U.S. presidential campaign in 2008, he “voted four times for Sarah Palin and six times for David Archuleta,” in reference to the popular Republican vice presidential candidate and frontrunner contestant that year. Interestingly, movie critic RogerAmerican Ebert Idol’s mounted criticism against Palin for being “the American Idol candidate,” in which he argued the following: I think I might be able to explain some of Sarah Palin’s appeal. She’s the “American Idol” candidate. Consider. What defines an “American Idol” finalist? They’re good‑looking, work well on television, have a sunny personality, are fierce competitors, and so talented, why, they’re darned near the real thing. There’s a reason “American Idol” gets such high ratings. People identify with the contestants. They think, Hey, that could be me up there on that show! . My problem is, I don’t want to be up there. I don’t want a vice president who is darned near good enough. I want a vice president who is better, wiser, well‑traveled, has met world leaders, who three months ago had an opinion on Iraq.
