In March, the season kicks off with the TCR Asia Pacific Cup at the Formula 1 Rolex , set to feature local stars up against a raft of international drivers, including two entries from New Zealand. In November, the TCR field will descend on Australia’s most famous racetrack – Mount Panorama – for the inaugural TCR Bathurst 500, where the world’s best TCR drivers will have the chance to take on the mountain. Nine events, a growing, diverse grid and a calendar that is the envy of almost any racing championship in the world makes the 2020 TCR Australia Series one of the most eagerly-anticipated Touring Car seasons in living memory.

The 21-year old is well aware, however, that defending his title will be far from straightforward as his rivals - both the drivers and their teams - now have a season of TCR experience under their belts. “This year, several of the teams had a few things go wrong mechanically, but they know all about the cars now! I’d love to defend my title, but I know it’ll be a lot tougher for sure. Based on what we saw in 2019, credibility is something that TCR Australia isn’t lacking…

During the final pit stop of the race, Morley came within inches of the #32 Speed Syndicate Motorsports car of Mikey Taylor and a quicker pit stop kept the Road Shagger machine a fraction ahead of Taylor’s as the two of them left pit lane nose-to-tail, but Morley kept Taylor’s Audi at bay. 12 The Hyundai Veloster N cars that had finished first and second in the 2019 championship filled the places from fourth to sixth, with Michael Lewis- followed by Gabby Chaves-Ryan Norman and Mark Wilkins-Harry Gottsacker. After winning last year’s race at Daytona, the Honda Civic Type R cars were fighting for podium positions but were plagued with tyre problems and eventually the best Civic was the LA Honda World Racing car of Matt Pombo-Mike La Marra that finished eighth behind the Canadian Audi of Travis Hill-Ron Tomlinson. The single Alfa Romeo Giulietta run by KMW Motorsports with TMR Engineering performed well; Tim Lewis claimed pole position and then, together with co-driver Roy Block, led for the first hour before losing 14 laps in the pits with a cracked manifold. The second round of the 2020 IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge takes place at Sebring International Raceway on March 19th.

The Procar Championship resumed at Dubai Autodrome for rounds 7 and 8 after a break of six weeks and Costas Papantonis began the New Year in the same way he had finished 2019, by claiming a double victory in the TCR class. Papantonis set the class's fastest lap in Qualifying and then won both races ahead of his Mouhritsa Racing teammate Alexandros Annivas; they were both at the wheel of CUPRA cars run by Dragon Racing. Father and son Papantonis and Annivas had a close fight in Race 1, with Annivas taking the lead for the first time since the championship kicked off last October; however, some electrical issues deprived his car of turbocharger boost and so he was forced to stop to reset the system. As a consequence, he finished one lap behind his father. In the second race, Annivas was again chasing Papantonis and this time he finished a close second. The series will return to Dubai on February 22, for Rounds 9 and 10.

23 What are your plans for 2020? Three questions to… “We will be again competing in the TCR Europe series. The objective is to field three cars, and at this very moment, I’m pleased to say that we have already signed deals for Julien Briché two of them. We will have a few developments on the Peugeot 308 TCR car, but nothing major, it’s about little things that are expected to improve a package that has Julien Briché has developed the reputation of being a very quick driver and a true fighter in the TCR arena. On top of that, his straightforward approach and his unsophisticated personality have allowed the 39-year-old from Clermont-Ferrand, who runs his own family team JSB Compétition, to become one of the most popular figures in the TCR Europe paddock. We lacked a little bit of consistency with respect to Josh Files and paid a high price for the broken engine we suffered at the Red Bull Ring. Still, what I am most proud of is the four race wins we conquered, more than anyone else, and the fact that I was able to stay in contention until the bitter end.”

Peugeot has a policy of bringing up to TCR racing the young talents emerging from the Peugeot 308 Racing Cup, I guess you value that? “Yes, and they should get a lot of credit for that. Their ‘filière’ really works well and serves the purpose, in both rallying and circuit racing. The winners of their mono-brand trophies are assured to go up one step on the ladder. Last year’s TCR Europe offered the best evidence of that, with Teddy and Jimmy Clairet joining me on the grid, plus a number of occasional participations from other Peugeot Racing Cup regulars. We all can rely on their support and that is quite important.”
