President’s Message Welcome to the 2018 Fall Edition of the OHJA InGate! Another show season has come to an end and it feels like it just started! I hope the goals you set out for yourself were realized and that this year was a success for you. I also hope that you had an opportunity to participate in one or more of our many programs offered this season. Did you know that we had 15 different programs that we ran this year representing over 60 OHJA classes? These programs are proudly put together and run by the amazing volunteers that make up our Board and our underlying subcommittees. A big thank you from me to all our OHJA Board of Directors and Committees for all that you do to serve and support our members throughout the year. This takes a tremendous amount of effort to coordinate and ensure all our programs run smoothly throughout the season. Your dedication is truly appreciated. If you are interested in giving your time in support of the OHJA please reach out about joining the Board or one of our Committees. Or if you just have a great idea for a new program or feedback for an existing program please let us know by emailing us at [email protected]. We are planning now for 2019 and we would love to hear from you. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our partners at each of the Ontario venues that hosted the OHJA programs and initiatives this year. Thank you to Angelstone Tournaments, Caledon Equestrian Park and Wesley Clover Park for your support and being such gracious hosts of the OHJA programs. Thank you also to co-sponsors Bruno Delgrange, Grand Prix and Running Fox for supporting our OHJA Equitation programs in 2018. Enjoy this great issue of the InGate highlighting some great moments during the 2018 season and a view of the behind the scenes and getting to know some of the great individuals around the horse show. The intention of these classes was to specifically provide Ontario breeders and owners new opportunities to network at Gold Competitions and to develop, as well as market, their young horses and breeding programs. As part of the Young Hunter Development program, 3 different classes were offered: a model, an under saddle, and an over fences classes. Classes were restricted to horses aged 3-5 years old and were offered at both the Equestrian Festival at Caledon Equestrian Park, as well as at the National at Angelstone Tournaments. We had the chance to catch up with some of our 2018 winners to learn a bit more about their horses and what they did to prepare for these classes. I was drawn to the hunter development classes because The hunter development classes are definitely something I believe that they are a great platform to introduce a that I will gear him towards. young horse to the show world. For example, to compete in the model you must teach your horse to trot in hand. Similarly, for the under saddle portion your horse must be comfortable working in a group. This took some practice for Cheers as he used to get quite excited cantering with everyone in the under saddle! Preparing and competing in these classes teaches your horse very good basics and skills that they will use throughout their careers. 3. What did you enjoy the most about competing in these classes? I really enjoy competing in confirmation classes. They give the horses great ring experience in a controlled setting. For the competitor it is very interesting to see the different preferences for style and type amongst different judges. 4. What are your thoughts on the introduction of these new Young Hunter Development classes in Ontario? I would encourage anyone with a young horse to consider competing in these classes. They were a lot of fun and provided a very positive learning experience for the young Sarah Barker and Cheers. Photo courtesy of RingSide Media. horses.
