TONIGHT'S GAME The Capitals face the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena on Saturday in the second of four meetings between the teams this season. The Capitals won the last meeting against the Blue Jackets 4-0 on Dec. 8. Washington holds a 12-3-1-2 record all-time at Capital One Arena and a 24-9-1-4 record all time against Columbus.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT Great 8 - Alex Ovechkin registered his 128th multi-goal game on Thursday against the Boston Bruins to boost his career point total to 639-532—1,171 and surpass Bobby Hull (610g, 560a) for sole possession of 50th place on the NHL’s all-time points list. San Jose Sharks forward Joe Thornton (ranked 16th; 405g, 1,042a) is the only other active NHL player to rank in the top 50. Ovechkin leads the NHL with 32 goals this season as he aims to break a tie with Hull for the most seasons as the NHL’s goal-scoring leader. Both have led the League in goals on seven occasions. Ovechkin also moved past Mike Bossy (127) and Jaromir Jagr (127) for the ninth-most multi- goal games in NHL history, three back of tying Teemu Selanne (131) for eighth. In NHL history, 6,186 NHL players have played in at least one NHL game and have recorded 128 goals or fewer in their career. Ovechkin is now two goals shy of passing Dave Andreychuk (640) for 14th place on the NHL's all-time scoring list. Among the top 20 goal scorers all-time, Ovechkin's 0.61 goals per game ranks second (Mario Lemieux: 0.75 goals per game). Ovechkin, who is already the all-time goal scorer among Russian-born players, is now nine points away from passing Sergei Fedorov (483g, 696a in 1,248 games) to become the highest scoring Russian-born player all- time.

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS Young V – Jakub Vrana scored the opening goal against the Boston Bruins on Thursday. That marked the seventh time this season Vrana has scored the Capitals' first goal of the game, which is the most on the team, and his eight first period goals leads the Capitals. Vrana has 15 goals this season and is three points shy of setting a new single season high in points. Vrana's 15 goals this season rank second on the Capitals (Alex Ovechkin: 32). Vrana is on pace to record 28 goals this season. Should Vrana reach the 25 goal mark, he will become the fourth different Capitals draft pick to record at least 25 goals in a season since 2010 (Alex Ovechkin: nine times; Evgeny Kuznetsov: once; Alex Semin: once). Additionally, Vrana has been on the ice for 35 goals at five-on-five this season and just 18 goals against at five-on-five, the best differential among forwards on the Capitals.

Holtbeast - Braden Holtby stopped 39 of the 41 shots against the Boston Bruins on Thursday and has now stopped 62 of the last 66 shots he's faced over his last two games, both wins (Jan. 6 at Detroit Red Wings). This season, Holtby, who will represent the Capitals at the NHL All-Star Game for the Metropolitan Division, leads all goaltenders with 14 wins (14-4-1) against Eastern Conference opponents with a 2.41 goals against average and a .928 save percentage, which ranks seventh and sixth, respectively, among goaltenders with at least 10 games against the Eastern Conference. Since Nov. 4, Holtby has stopped 485 of the 516 shots he's faced at even strength (.940 save percentage), the highest save percentage among all goaltenders with at least 12 games played during that time frame. Holtby is now nine games shy of 400 career games to become the second goaltender in franchise history to reach the mark (Olie Kolzig: 711 games). Since entering the NHL in 2010, Holtby's 242 wins are tied for the fourth most in the NHL, despite being the only goaltender ranked in the top 15 with fewer than 400 games played. Since 2010, Holtby ranks 19th in games played, however, he is the only goaltender in the top 27 goaltenders in games played with fewer than 100 losses (242-99-37).

Osh-Babe - After recording two assists against the Boston Bruins on Thursday, T.J. Oshie has four points (2g, 2a) in his last two games. On Jan. 8, Oshie recorded his 200th career goal in the Capitals' 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Only 51 players have reached the 200 goal milestone since 2008-09, when Oshie made his NHL debut. Since joining the Capitals in 2015-16, Oshie has recorded 90 goals in 254 games to rank second on the Capitals (Alex Ovechkin: 164) and his 17.1 shooting percentage ranks third in the NHL among players with at least 200 games played. Oshie’s 13 goals this season are tied for third on the Capitals and his 51.47 on-ice shot attempt percentage (421 shot attempts for and 397 against) at five-on-five rank first among Capitals forwards. Oshie is three games shy of 700 career games and 17 points shy of 500 career points. Oshie is aiming to become the 16th player from the 2005 NHL Draft class to reach the 700 game mark and the sixth forward to reach the 500 point mark.

Willy’s World – Tom Wilson recorded an assist on Thursday against the Boston Bruins, his 22nd point (13g, 9a) in his 24th game of the season, and he now has three points (2g, 1a) in his last three games. Wilson is two goals shy of passing his career high of 14 goals set last season - one less than his career high of 15 in 54 fewer games. This season, Wilson has scored 11 of his 13 goals at five on five. Averaging 13:55 at even strength this season, Wilson's 1.80 goals per 60 minutes of play are the fifth highest rate in the NHL among players with at least 300 minutes of even strength ice time (Nashville's Viktor Arvidsson: 2.35; Buffalo's Jeff Skinner: 2.14; Alex Ovechkin: 2.03; Toronto's John Tavares: 2.00). Over the course of a full season (Wilson has missed 19 games this season), Wilson is on a 44 goal pace.

Bullying Blue Jackets - The Capitals have won 13 of their last 16 games against the Blue Jackets and have won five of their last seven games against Columbus at Capital One Arena. Nicklas Backstrom has 25 points (7g, 18a) in 31 career games against Columbus, while Alex Ovechkin has 17 goals in 32 career games. Braden Holtby is 15-5-2 against Columbus with a 2.48 goals against average and a .919 save percentage.

Additional Capitals Notes Sweet Nicky - Nicklas Backstrom recorded his 11th goal of the season on Thursday against the Boston Bruins. Backstrom has recorded 45 points (11g, 34a) and is on pace for 87 points this season, which would be his highest point total since 2009-10 (33g, 68a). Backstrom's 34 assists are tied for 13th in the NHL and rank first among Swedish-born forwards. Since entering the NHL, Backstrom's 624 assists rank first in the NHL, 31 more than Joe Thornton (593), who ranks second in the NHL among active players during that span. Backstrom's 624 assists are the most among the 2006 NHL Draft class, 127 more than Philadelphia's Claude Giroux (497). Additionally, Backstrom's 844 career points (220g, 624a) are the most in his draft class, 56 more than Pittsburgh's Phil Kessel (788).

Strong in the East - In their last 17 games against Eastern Conference opponents, Washington holds a 16-1-0 record and have outscored opponents 66-35. Since Nov. 19 at Montreal, when that stretch first began, the Caps lead the League in wins and points (32) against Eastern Conference opponents.

Elite Dishers – The Capitals are the only team in the NHL with three players that rank in the top 25 in assists per game (John Carlson, tied for 15th: 0.83 assists per game; Nicklas Backstrom, 18th: 0.81 assists per game; Evgeny Kuznetsov, tied for 20th: 0.78). Only the Colorado Avalanche (Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen), the Calgary Flames (Johnny Gaudreau and Marc Giordano) and the Winnipeg Jets (Blake Wheeler and Dustin Byfuglien) have at least two players that rank in the top 25 in assists per game.

All-Star Behind the Bench - In his first career season as a head coach, Todd Reirden has been named the head coach of the Metropolitan Division All-Star team. Reirden became the second coach in franchise history to serve as a head coach at an All-Star game (Barry Trotz, 2016, 2018), the first in franchise history to be named an All-Star head coach in their first season with the franchise, and the fourth coach in NHL history to be named as head coach in an All-Star game in his first ever season as a head coach (Detroit's Jimmy Skinner: 1954; Florida's Doug MacLean: 1996; San Jose's Todd McLellan: 2009). BLUE JACKETS NOTES CBJ AT 43 The Jackets, who are 9-3-1 in the last 13 games, have kicked off the season with 25 wins and 28 games of picking up points in their first 43 contests to sit in third place in the Metropolitan Division at 25-15-3 (53 points). The 25 wins/53 points in the first 43 games is the second-best start in club history, trailing only the 30 wins and 64 points recorded to start the 2016-17 campaign (30-9-4).

TOUGH WEEK AHEAD Saturday’s game concludes a stretch of three-straight over five days against teams sitting among the top six clubs in the league. The Lightning, who lead the league with 70 points, shut out the Jackets on Tuesday night. Nashville, who fell to the Jackets in OT on Thursday, ranks sixth at 58 points and Washington (Saturday’s opponent) is fifth at 58 points. Dating back to the 2016-17 season in fact, each team ranks in the top five in wins with the Capitals leading the league (131 wins), the Lightning sitting second (130), the Penguins and Predators in third (121) and Jackets in fifth (120).

BOUNCING BACK Columbus has found success this season bouncing back from losses. The club is 14-3-1 following a loss on the campaign after Thursday’s win and have outscored opponents 74-51 in the 18 instances. They have scored four or more goals in 13 of the games and defeated opponents by two or more goals in nine of their 14 victories. The club has limited losing streaks to just two games to date (four times).

SPECIAL TEAMS DELIVERY The Jackets converted on both power-play chances against the Predators on Thursday, the first time they were perfect on the power play this season and the fourth time in club history they were perfect on more than one opportunity in a game (2-of-2; Jan. 17, 2012 vs. Edmonton). The club also killed off both of Nashville’s power plays, and have now killed off 30-of-33 (90.9%) opponent power-play chances over the past 16 contests, ranking third in the NHL since Dec. 6. They rank fifth in the NHL in penalty kill percentage since Nov. 1, killing off 68-of-80 opponent power-play opportunities (85%).

THURSDAYS WELCOME The Blue Jackets won their 12th Thursday game of the season on Thursday with the club staying perfect on the day on the campaign (12-0-0; 6-0-0 at home). It’s now tied for the longest win streak to start a season on any specific day in NHL history (Det; Wednesdays from 10/3/07-3/19/08). The 12 victories have already surpassed the franchise mark for wins on the day in a single campaign (2002-03; 9-5-0) and with seven more Thursday contests are tied for the record for most wins on a day in a single campaign (Tuesdays in 2016- 17 and Saturdays in 2014-15).

600 WINS BEHIND THE BENCH Head coach John Tortorella became the 19th coach in NHL history (sixth active) to post 600 career victories behind the bench with the overtime victory over Nashville on Thursday. The Boston native, who has won two Jack Adams Awards as the league’s Coach of the Year and won the Stanley Cup in 2004 with Tampa Bay, ranks first all-time among U.S. born coaches in NHL wins, posting a 600-477- 141 record over 18 seasons. He is the Jackets’ all-time winningest coach at 154-102-26 and is three games from passing Ken Hitchcock (284) for the most games behind the Blue Jackets’ bench in club history.

MULTI-GOAL EFFORTS Both Artemi Panarin and Boone Jenner scored two goals apiece on Thursday night, helping the club secure the overtime victory. It marked the 18th and 19th time a player has scored multiple goals in a contest this season. Panarin scored both goals on the power- play for his third multi-goal game of the season and team-leading 14th multi-point game of the year. He has 6-7-13 over the last nine games, with points in eight of them. Jenner scored two goals for the second time this season and eighth time in his career, giving him 2- 1-3 over his last three contests.

HEY NOW, YOU’RE AN ALLSTAR Forward Cam Atkinson and defenseman Seth Jones were among 37 players selected to participate in the 2019 Honda NHL All-Star Game (Jan. 25-26 in San Jose) on Jan. 2.
