1 Geography 321 HISTORICAL GEOGRAPHY OF URBANIZATION: CITIES, SPACE AND POWER From the origins of urbanism to the modern era Winter 2017 Tuesdays and Thursdays 1100-1230 in Geography Room 200 Professor Derek Gregory Teaching Assistant: Jeff Whyte Peter Wall Institute of Advanced Studies 6331 Crescent Road [head to the flagpole and turn left] E-mail: [email protected] OBJECTIVES Geography 321 is a one-term, three-credit course that focuses on a critical examination of the relations between cities, power and productions of space. The course is an historical geography: it begins with the first cities in Mesopotamia and Egypt, and makes a series of ‘site-visits’ to cities in other places and other periods, both inside and outside ‘the West’, before arriving at modern cities in Europe, Asia and elsewhere in the world (but not North America: cities (t)here are considered in other courses). As such, it acts as a counterpoint to courses in contemporary urban geography (like Geography 350). Geography 321 looks at cities from the inside and the outside: at the built form of cities, the day-to-day lives of the people that inhabit them, and the connections between the two. It also looks at the political, economic and cultural networks through which cities have been geared into wider sequences of social change. In doing so it seeks to articulate a series of theoretical ideas with detailed empirical studies. 2 READING There is no textbook that covers the material discussed in this course: if there were, there would be no need for me to lecture. -

I say ‘intellectual’ but the course is also ‘political’ because its central concern is to expose the connections between power, knowledge and geography: and it is that emphasis on power that will give our discussions a political edge. In the first part of the course, Shaking the Foundations, we will consider some of the ways in which geography has been positioned (and on occasion policed) in relation to various foundations: history; philosophy; science; economy; and culture. In the past, each of these would probably have been accorded a Capital Letter because they were often assumed to provide privileged vantage points – places of overview – but much more recently their claims to provide secure and certain knowledge – guarantees of a single Truth – have been called into question. In their place, it has become common to speak of geographical knowledges as ‘situated knowledges’: always partial, always provisional. We will explore how this change has come about, examine its implications, and see how 1 it helps us understand geography’s involvements (and investments) in colonialism and postcolonialism – issues that should be of great moment in any school of geography, but most of all in institutions like ours. -

1 Human Geography
HUMAN GEOGRAPHY: AN INTRODUCTION † Derek Gregory and Noel Castree Introduction When we were invited by Sage to identify published work in human geography that represents what is best and most distinctive about the field it seemed an impossible task (it still does) because there is such a rich volume of material to draw from. We decided to focus on English-language and to a lesser extent other European contributions, although we are acutely aware of the irony, even the imperialism of limiting a field like human geography to knowledges rooted in only a fraction of the world. We discuss below the dangers of delimiting Geography as a European or Euro-American science, and several of our selections return to this issue again and again. If there is a much richer geography of Geography than this, there is also a much longer history than our selections might imply. Our focus on the last thirty years is not an exercise in progressivism or triumphalism which treats the present as the climactic moment in a chain of contributions that reaches back into an ever more distant and ever more imperfect past. Here too our decision was a purely pragmatic way to confine our search. Even within these geographical and historical limits it was difficult to make a judicious selection – and we know how many contributions we had to excise at the eleventh hour for fear of turning five volumes into fifty – † References to selections that appear in these five volumes are shown in bold. 1 because human geography, perhaps more than most disciplines, is so heterodox.
