In an attempt to improve the sustainability of the new Student Union Building at U.B.C. biodegradable plastic bags are being considered. This report will focus on the use of biodegradable plastic bags in the new SUB building at U.B.C. and on which products currently available on the market would be best suited for this application. Three different types of biodegradable plastics are reviewed. These are starch based plastics, poly- lactic acid (PLA) plastics and poly-3-hydroxybutyrate plastics, all of which were chosen as they are the most readily available.
