In order to avoid confusion, a date which in the modern calendar would be written 2 February 1714 is written 2 February 1713/4 - i.e. the baptism, marriage or burial occurred in the 3 months (January, February and the first 3 weeks of March) of 1713 which 'rolled over' into what in a modern calendar would be 1714. • Civil registration was introduced in England and Wales in 1837 and records were archived quarterly; hence, for example, 'born in 1840Q1' the author here uses to mean that the birth took place in January, February or March of 1840. Where only a baptism date is given for an individual born after 1837, assume the birth was registered in the same quarter. A contextual analysis of the novel reveals that it provides commentary on the economic devastation that followed the collapse of the so-called South Sea Bubble, the state of the Anglican church throughout Richardson’s lifetime, and growing British anxiety about suicide and depression. Newman Medleys Farm High Hurstwood Near Uckfield, Sussex National Library of Australia State Library of New South Wales Filmed: 1964 BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES Henry Stobart (1824-1895), the son of William and Barbara Stobart, was born at Chester le Street, County Durham. He was educated at the Grange School, Sunderland, Queen’s College, Oxford, and Wells Theological College. He was ordained as a deacon in 1849 and as a priest in 1852. He was a curate in Yorkshire in 1849-51 and then spent about five years travelling overseas as the tutor and companion of Lord Henry Scott, the son of the Duke of Buccleuch. In 1853-54 Stobart and Scott, together with Lord Schomberg Kerr and the Reverend Thomas Bowles, spent several months in Australia before sailing to the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, Hong Kong, Canton, Singapore, Ceylon and India. In the following two years Stobart spent much of his time travelling in Egypt, the Middle East and Europe. In 1857 Stobart married Annie Mulholland. In the following few years he was the curate of parishes in Gloucester, Sussex and Staffordshire. In 1865 the Duke of Buccleuch appointed him Rector of Warkton, Northamptonshire, where he remained until 1881. He was chiefly responsible for the substantial restoration of St Edmund’s Church, which he partly funded himself. He died in 1895 at Funchal, Madeira. Lord Henry Scott (1832-1905) was the second son of the 5th Duke of Buccleuch. From 1861 to 1884 he was a Conservative member of the House of Commons. -

The History of The Hendreds School 1860 - 2015 The History of The Hendreds School 1860 - 2015 When I arrived at The Hendreds School to collect files to start researching the village school, the bags of photos, dusty box files and newsletters were brought alive by the tales that Ms Tansley, the headteacher, told me about children who had long since left the school, “He has become very successful in business. The parents of these little Japanese boys still send me a Christmas card.” She laughed uncontrollably when we came to some photos of a rather racy performance of ‘The Full Monty’ by the PTA back in 2002 which raised considerable funds for a building project. Those photos didn’t leave the office! The typographic conventions used by Mr Norris have been largely retained though the typewriter font of the original has been replaced by Times New Roman, 12 pt. A few spelling errors in the original have been detected and retained, but marked [sic]. FOREWORD Among the vestments used at St. Michael's is a set which was originally intended for the new Cathedral Church of St. Michael at Coventry. The chasuble is ample, of a roughspun material similar to what Our Lord would have worn. It is lined with rich purple, reminiscent of the robe with which Pilate mocked him. On the back there is a brilliant tapering column of colour, all the colours of the spectrum in order, leading up to the cross at the top. These vestments are symbolic not only of the High Priesthood of Jesus but also of the history of the Church. It is a multi-coloured history. The predominating colour has been different from age to age, but each colour needs all the rest in order to find its consummation in the pure Light of the World. -

Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, University of London, Institute of Education, History and Humanities Department. 1. LON©f • ot`J ABSTRACT. There is a consensus of academic opinion that for approximately 100 years stretching from 1688, the date of the 'Glorious Revolution', to the onset of industrialisation England enjoyed relative stability, the condition being attributed to political pragmatism. The purpose of this thesis is twofold; to document the educational developments that characterized the period and to examine their effect, nature and scope, about which historians sharply disagree. The principle that in any age education is a social tool whose practical possibilities rest on people's assumptions determined the strategy of pursuing four main lines of enquiry. These form thematic chapters, the contents of which are briefly summarized as follows: 1. Provision; the Church of England's supervisory role; incidental management of schools. 2. The curriculum and teaching methodology employed in the various scholastic institutions. 3. A survey of scholars in attendance at elementary schools, grammar schools and academies. 4. A consideration of the teaching force with sections on religious attitudes, financial standing and professionalism. Although the study has a national dimension its distinct regional focus is intentional because the bulk of surviving records relate to a locality, enabling its educational system to be largely reconstructed. The Peterborough diocese proved to be an eminently suitable choice being both the setting for educational diversity and extremely rich in source material. -

Major Robert Thompson The Thompson Historical Society Foreword by Joseph Iamartino: In Book I, Professor Alan Thomson has assembled a remarkable biography of Major Robert Thompson. The Major was involved in many of the principal events in one of the most dramatic centuries in recorded history. However, the information about Robert Thompson had to be found, piece by piece, like a jigsaw puzzle scattered after a tornado. In our Internet age, it is easy to “Google up” information on a person but Prof. Thomson’s effort came the old fashioned way, laboriously finding and then reading the dusty texts, with one clue leading to another, assembling piece upon piece of a puzzle. The challenge for readers is to understand that many elements of the life of such a complex man as Robert Thompson, with activities in the American colonies, on the European continent, even in India, remain hidden to us even with Professor Thomson’s insights. It is up to us to assemble the story knowing there are huge gaps but, at least we now have a chance of understanding his story thanks to Professor Thomson’s labor of love. My son Christian, who was attending college in the UK at the time, and I visited Professor Thomson in London when Alan so generously donated his text to the Thompson Historical Society. -

Iolo Morganwg and the Place of Authenticity within the Creation of a Welsh Cultural Identity 39 Iolo Morganwg and the Place of Authenticity within the Creation of a Welsh Cultural Identity Marcus Colla Third year undergraduate, University of Tasmania The eighteenth century has been described as heralding a ‘cultural renaissance’ in Wales, in which that country’s literature, music and oral history became subjects of tremendous interest to numerous Welsh scholars, writers, romantics and patriots.1 As a result, a series of patriotically motivated individuals – the most notable of whom was the poet and antiquarian Iolo Morganwag – came to formulate a unique Welsh identity in the face of an ongoing process of cultural integration into Britain.2 With an impetus to restoring the Welsh to their ‘rightful place’ within Britain, this identity was constructed with a long view to the ancient past in mind. Yet, in pursuing the historical continuity of these Welsh traditions, the process by which the revivalists’ Welsh identity was established owed as much to deliberate invention, manipulation and forgery as it did to genuine historical discovery and national self-reflection. The historical importance of Iolo Morganwg and his fellow patriots, thus, rests upon the relationship between authenticity and identity. This relationship, it will be argued, is intricate, and by placing the revivalist movement firmly within its historical context, it becomes clear that the inventions and historical distortions of the revivalists were the products of a much greater cultural phenomenon. 1 Prys Morgan, The Eighteenth Century Renaissance, (Llandybie: Christopher Davies Publishers, 1981). 2 For the purposes of this essay, the term ‘revivalism’ is used to refer to those Welshmen who sought to establish or re-establish a Welsh identity based on tradition and mythology.
