Kevin Pape Project Manager January 14, 2009 ABSTRACT Under contract to ENTRAN, Gray & Pape, Inc. has prepared recommendations concerning the archaeological potential of Segment II/III of the Eastern Corridor Multimodal Projects (HAM-SR32-0.00, PID 22970; FHWA-OH-EIS-04-02), located in Hamilton and Clermont Counties, Ohio. The recommendations are based on a model developed by Gray & Pape, Inc. using the results of previous work conducted for the project (Weed 2002), documentary research, interviews with landowners and other knowledgeable parties, and an informal reconnaissance of the project area. Gray & Pape, Inc. divided the project area into three zones: Zone 1 is the undeveloped floodplains and terraces of the Little Miami River. Zone 2 includes floodplains and terraces that have been developed in historical times, and Zone 3 includes the valley and uplands east of the Village of Newtown. -

Evaluating Beneficial Use: Recreation
Ohio 2010 Integrated Report Section F Evaluating Beneficial Use: Recreation F1. Background Prior to the 2002 Integrated Report (IR), the reporting of recreation use impairment in Ohio was sporadic. Section 305(b) reports (1998 and earlier) may have included an indication of the potential for recreation use impairment in various streams, but a cohesive listing was not presented. The 2002 IR employed a uniform methodology to examine readily available data on fecal coliform counts. This approach was based on counting the number of exceedances of the secondary contact recreation use maximum criterion [5000 colony forming units (cfu)/100 ml fecal coliform or 576 cfu/100 ml Escherichia coli (E. coli)]. Any assessment unit with five or more samples over the last five years above these values was listed as having an impaired recreation use. The 2004 IR adopted a more statistically robust methodology for assessing the recreation use attainment of the State’s surface waters linked more directly to the applicable water quality standards. The methodology adopted in 2004 continued to be used through the 2008 IR. The 2008 IR also included a preview of changes anticipated at the time for the 2010 report based on the expectation that the watershed assessment unit (WAU) would change from a larger watershed size (11-digit hydrologic unit) to a smaller watershed size (12-digit hydrologic unit) and on four anticipated revisions to the water quality standards: 1) dropping the fecal coliform criteria; 2) creation of a tiered set of classes of primary contact recreation waters based on recreation use intensity; 3) revision of the geometric mean averaging period; and 4) extension of the recreation season. -

In the beginning… Lighthouse Architects & Contractors • Starting in the 1790s, contractors bid on LH construction projects advertised in local newspapers. • Bids reviewed by regional Superintendent of Lighthouses, a political appointee, who informed U.S. Treasury Dept of his selection. • Superintendent approved final contract and supervised contractor during building process. Creation of Lighthouse Board • Effective in 1852, U.S. Lighthouse Board assumed all duties related to navigational aids. • U.S. divided into 12 LH districts with inspector (naval officer) assigned to each district. • New LH construction supervised by district inspector with primary focus on quality over cost, resulting in greater LH longevity. • Soon, an engineer (army officer) was assigned to each district to oversee construction & maintenance of lights. The Unionidae of the Chagrin River: The Remnant of a Molluscan Fauna1 MICHAEL A. HOGGARTH2, The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Natural Areas and Preserves, Fountain Square, Columbus, OH 43224 ABSTRACT. The study of the distribution of the Unionidae of Ohio reveals information on the biogeography of this family that may be useful in the study of other groups of animals. Thirty sites on the Chagrin River and its major tributaries, the East and Aurora branches, were sampled for freshwater mussels during this study. A total of 268 specimens representing nine species of the family Unionidae were found. Living and/or freshly dead specimens of eight species were identified. Additionally, a single subfossil fragment of Alasmidonta marginata was taken, indicating that this species once occurred in the river. Three reaches of the Chagrin River system were found to support Unionidae: the Aurora Branch contained five species, the main stem of the Chagrin River below the town of Chagrin Falls contained five species, and the Chagrin River above Chagrin Falls contained seven species. The river above the falls contained the most significant proportion of the fauna in the system, with over 80% of all specimens collected from this reach, and suggests that the falls has not always acted as a barrier to distribution.
