It is a medium-sized species to about 215 cm TL, with males reaching adulthood at about 110 cm TL. Rhynchobatus springeri closely resembles R. palpebratus in body shape and having a dark, eye-brow like marking on its orbital membrane, but differs from this species in having a lower vertebral count (113–126 vs. 130–139 total free centra), a broader preorbital snout, and more rows of white spots on the tail of adults. Other Rhynchobatus species in the region attain a much larger adult size, and have a relatively narrower snout and much higher vertebral counts. It is estimated that their commercial landings ranged between 4,206 m. tons in 1981 to 403 metric tons in 2011. Analysis of the landing data from Karachi Fish Harbor (the largest fish landing center in Pakistan) revealed that seven species of guitarfish and wedgefish are landed (January 2019-February 2020 data). Granulated guitarfish (Glaucostegus granulatus) contributed about 61.69 % in total annual landings of this group followed by widenose guitarfish (G. obtusus) contributing about 23.29 % in total annual landings of guitarfish and wedgefish. Annandale’s guitarfish (Rhinobatos annandalei) and bowmouth guitarfish (Rhina ancylostoma) contributed 7.32 and 5.97 % in total annual landings respectively. Spotted guitarfish (R. punctifer), Halavi ray (G. halavi), smoothnose wedgefish (Rhynchobatus laevis) and Salalah guitarfish (Acroteriobatus salalah) collectively contributed about 1.73 % in total annual landings. Smoothnose wedgefish (R. laevis) is rarest of all the members of Order Rhinopristiformes. G. granulatus, G. obtusus, R. ancylostoma, G. halavi and R. laevis are critically endangered according to IUCN Red List whereas A. salalah is near threatened and R. annandalei is data deficient. There are no aimed fisheries for guitarfish and wedgefish in Pakistan but these fishes are mainly caught as by-catch of bottom-set gillnetting and shrimp trawling. -

First collected in 1934, the broader ichthyological community have been aware of this distinctive but little known ray since the late 1990’s. Rhynchobatus cooki is the smallest of the wedgefishes (to 81 cm TL) and has the lowest vertebral count (fewer than 107 centra). It is also distinguishable from its congeners based on its long, hastate snout, very strongly undulate anterior pectoral-fin margin, coloration and aspects of its squamation. The dorsal coloration is mainly dark and distinctively marked with white blotches, spots and streaks, and has a dark cruciate marking on the interorbit and a prominent white border around the body margin. Unlike most other wedgefish species, the snout tip lacks dark blotches and there is no black pectoral-fin marking. -

It is known, or can be inferred or projected, that the regulation of trade in the species is necessary to avoid it becoming eligible for inclusion in Appendix I in the near future: Rapid recent declines in populations of Rhynchobatus australiae and Rhynchobatus djiddensis of 80% or more, meeting Appendix I listing criteria for marine species of low productivity, are already documented in some regions (e.g., Jabado et al. 2017; Jabado 2018). Using the precautionary approach where data is lacking, and given the global footprint of tangle and gill net fisheries, similar declines are likely throughout much of the species range. -

9 WEDGEFISHES Family Rhinidae P.R. Last, W.T. White & B. Séret Wedgefishes are medium to large, shark-like rays (0.7–3.1 m TL as adults and weighing at least 227 kg) with a variably depressed trunk, weakly formed disc, and a head either thickened and broadly domed, or flattened wedge-shaped or rounded. Pectoral fins are triangular and join the body behind eye level. The nostrils are long and narrow, and usually lie oblique to a small horizontal mouth with rounded to oval teeth that lack distinct cusps. The anterior nasal flaps are poorly developed and do not form a nasal curtain. The spiracles are large with 0–3 skin folds along their hind margin. A robust tail is slightly longer than the disc, and has two upright dorsal fins (the first above the pelvic fins), and a well-developed bilobed caudal fin with a strongly concave posterior margin. Its pelvic fins are moderately sized, angular and are not divided into two lobes. The skin is covered with minute denticles and there is a variably developed series of thorns along the dorsal mid-line, and usually 2–3 short series on each shoulder. Dorsal surface mainly yellowish to greyish brown and white ventrally. Often with rows of white spots or ocelli, and often a black blotch on each pectoral fin (pectoral marking) that is variably surrounded by white spots (marking generally most obvious in young). The undersurface of the snout can have a blackish marking. The family now includes 10 valid species from 3 genera: Rhina, Rhynchobatus and Rhynchorhina. -

Supplementary Information for wedgefishes (Rhinidae) and giant guitarfishes (Glaucostegidae) Generation lengths There is a general lack of age and growth data for wedgefishes (Rhinidae) and giant guitarfishes (Glaucostegidae). Maximum age given by White et al. (2014) for female Rhynchobatus spp. (mixed samples of R. australiae and R. palpebratus) was 12 years. However, this figure alone is not useful to estimate generation length as White et al. (2014) did not provide female age at maturity, and the maximum age estimate was for a 183 cm total length (TL) individual, whereas R. palpebratus grows to 262 cm TL and R. australiae to ~300 cm TL (Last et al. 2016). To provide a more realistic generation length estimate for large rhinid species as well as large glaucostegid species (those species reaching ≥200 cm TL), data can be used from White et al. (2014) for the Giant Guitarfish (Glaucostegus typus): • Female age at maturity: 7 years (taken from the growth curve) • Female maximum age: 19 years (for a 250 cm TL individual which is under but close to the maximum size of 270 cm TL; Last et al. 2016) • Calculated generation length: 13 years • Estimated generation length: 15 years (to account for the larger maximum size of the species compared with the largest individual aged) For Glaucostegus cemiculus, Enajjar et al. (2012) found a female age at maturity of 5.1 years, and a maximum age of 14 years, which gives a generation length of 9.5 years. The largest specimen examined in this study was 198 cm TL, while the species reaches a maximum size of 265 cm TL; 9.5 years would therefore be an underestimate of generation length.
