This literature unit is a ten-week study guide and is designed to be used in conjunction with the Septimus Heap: Magyk book written by . It covers almost all of the aspects of Language, Literature and Literacy from the English component of the Australian Curriculum. The unit is made up of ten sections, one for each week of the term. It is suitable for students in Years 4, 5 or 6 and the direct links to the curriculum have been made to these year levels.

How to Use This Book:

1. Obtain at least one copy of the book Magyk (Septimus Heap series) by Angie Sage. 2. At the start of each week, read one section as outlined in the Table of Contents. Read it out loud to the class, or have students form ability groups and read out loud to each other (in which case you will need at least one copy of the book per group). Higher ability groups might prefer to read silently to themselves. 3. Discuss the section that was just read. Education 4. Hand out the quiz for that section for students to complete. 5. On subsequent days of the week, students complete some or all of the activities provided for that section. 6. Carry out spelling and vocabulary work throughout each week (see below for ideas).

Spelling/Vocabulary Ideas:

1. Choose words from each provided list for each ability group in your class. 2. Students carry out variousBrownlow activities in order to learn the spelling, defi nition and usage of each word. Examples of spelling and vocabulary ideas are: • Look-Cover-Visualise-Write-Check: students look at the word, cover the word, visualise the word in their mind, write the word, then check the spelling of the word • Syllables: students rewrite each word with slashes to show the syllables e.g. stu/dents • Word shapes: students write each word with either a tall box, short box or under the line box for each letter to show the shape of the letters in the Hawkerword e.g. © p l a y

6 HB5671 • 9781760015671 • © 2015 Hawker Brownlow Education • Rainbow writing: either write each word fi ve times in a list in different colours for each word or write each word three times over the top of itself, using different colours each time. • Alphabetical order: rewrite the spelling list so that it is in alphabetical order. • Dictionary meanings: students write down what they think each word means and then write down the actual dictionary defi nition. • Base word-prefi x/suffi x work: for each spelling word, write down its base word, then rewrite it with a prefi x and/or suffi x (or change the current one) e.g. Spelling Word Base Word Prefi x/Suffi x convincing convince unconvinced

• Put words into sentences: students put each word into a sentence to demonstrate their understanding of each word’s defi nition. • Recognising when a word in their spelling list is also a homograph or a homophone. A homograph is a word with the same spelling as another word but with a different sound and different meaning e.g. lead (to go in front of) and lead (metal). A homophone is a word with the same sound as another word but spelled differently and with a differentEducation meaning e.g. two/ to/too. • End of week spelling and/or vocabulary test. Early Finishers: • students draw their favourite part of the section they’ve just read • students write a retelling for the section they’ve just read • small groups act out the section they’ve just read • add to the class mural (see below) BrownlowClassroom Set Up: • Class mural: Pin up large pieces of drawing paper on the wall to create a papered space approximately 2 metres by 2 metres. Draw a scene from the beginning of the story and have students take turns to paint it with fi ne brushes. Add to the mural as the story is read. The fi nal effect could be that of a collage or a story map. • Decorate the classroom with ‘magical’ decorations – wizards’ hats, witches’ cauldrons, wands, vines, spell books, dragons, mood rings, silver stars, plastic spiders, etc. Hawker• In Week 10, have a MidWinter Feast party in the classroom to celebrate the end of the unit of study. Use some of the plans written by the students in © Activity 6.3.
