n Denmark we have a huge passion for cycling. We love it. We consider ourselves to be some of the most enthusiastic cycling fanatics. Our cycling culture is famous and we believe it Iis the best way to explore our country. Cycling in the cities is the easiest and fastest way to get around.

We will capture this Danish cycling enthusiasm and combine it with the strong concept of the UCI MTB Marathon World Championships. By developing your concept even further, we will raise the championships to the next level with increasing international visibility, and combine it with a mass participation race, Haderslev Mountain Bike Marathon Challenge. We will create an unforgettable experience for elite athletes, mass participants, spectators, press and the UCI family alike.

4 Visibility Denmark has a reputation for delivering high quality solutions in both products and services. This quality is the backbone of our commitment. We will deliver an outstanding championship. The athletes will encounter a race that is both technically and physically demanding. We have chosen both a venue and a challenging course to optimize international visibility and maximize impact.

The UCI MTB Marathon World Championships will be accessible across multiple platforms - from our own TV/streaming production to incorporating the latest technology in GPS based coverage giving access to fans who want to follow their favourite athletes throughout the course. Social media and web based streaming solutions will be utilized, as well as the more traditional media. Through this mix the organizing committee will ensure that MBT Marathon will be presented in the best possible way.

Our goal is to showcase the championships as both a spectacular elite event and a cycling festival for the mass participants. The potential is huge in this combination specifically in the UCI MTB Marathon World Championships. This potential is a key factor in our work with the event.

MTB Marathon World Championships Our strategy is to build more than just a race. However, this definitely does not mean that we will compromise on the quality of the championships races. The championships is the core of the event. Maintaining focus on the quality of the championship race is critical to the success.

Both the elite women and men will encounter a course with great variation that will be challenging both technically and physically. We are proposing a lap format that will provide both spectators and viewers alike an incredible experience. More importantly, our race will offer the best possible conditions on well-prepared tracks for the world-class athletes competing for the legendary rainbow jersey.

5 Gode fotos med mange ryttere. Måske fra Ålborg, Bent?

6 We Bike Together The Danish cycling community focuses on the development of mass participation projects. We have a number of large-scale road mass participation events each year and in 2015 Denmark hosted the Gran Fondo World Championships.

Now, we want to combine the elite event with the mass participation event. By adding more activities around the elite races we will increase the appeal to additional target segments. The day after the actual World Championships elite races, all riders will have the opportunity to participate in their own championships race.

The MTB Marathon World Championships is the right size event and format for us. A world- class event designed to fit our place and passion.

We can provide the UCI exciting innovative solutions and together we can deliver an unforgettable event.

7 2 MTB MARATHON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Geographical presentation Welcome to the heart of Denmark. The story of the Triangle Region is a story about seven different municipalities linked by a single vision: to create an open, green and diverse metropolis where both people and businesses can prosper. The City of Haderslev is located in the southern part of the Triangle Region only 60 kilometers north of the German border. This is literally the gateway between Scandinavia and the European continent. The city is located at the bottom of Haderslev Fjord in a sub glacial stream trench from the last ice age. This explains the hilly surroundings of the city.

The proposed course for the UCI MTB Marathon World Championships is exciting, challenging, and demanding. The athletes will encounter a race that is both technically and physically demanding.

The course is approximately 28 kilometres long, and starts and finishes in the centre of Haderslev. This also becomes the centre of all the UCI MTB Marathon World Championships activities.

11 3 WE BIKE TOGETHER

Under the motto “We Bike Together” the organising committee and its partners will focus on involvement of the entire city, local region and anyone who is passionate about MTB. The central proposed activities are:

Haderslev Mountain Bike Marathon Challenge, which will be the main adult mass participant event with several thousands of participants competing on the championships race course after the actual world championships.

A junior MTB race, which will also take place on the championships course, where trained and new riders can race, be muddy and experience a real world championships set-up. And a kids race inviting children to exercise and compete in fun race under the watchful eyes and helpful hands of adults.

The local business community and Haderslev stores together with our clubs and volunteers will be heavily involved in all activities to ensure that the event will be a community cycling festival and a great experience for both spectators and participants.

12 “The Danish MTB community as a whole would come together to make a championship like this an awesome experience for both the elite and the mass participants. MTB is already in a very positive development in Denmark and a championship like this is in my opinion exactly what is needed to take the sport to the next level.” Mads Bødker National MTB coach, Danish Cycling Federation

In Denmark, we had great success hosting a mass participation race at the World Half Marathon in 2014, where 30,000 recreational runners ran the 21,0975 kilometres together with the professional athletes. We have the experience and we know what it takes to make a combined elite and mass participation event a success.

14 15 4 EVENT CENTRE / VENUE

UCI MTB Marathon World Championships will start and finish in the centre of Haderslev. By starting and finishing in the city centre we lay the framework for an event that is both spectacular and cosy; an event that will live up to the goals we have set ourselves, namely a cycling festival and a great experience for the many spectators coming to see the world championships and those participating in the Haderslev Mountain Bike Marathon Challenge.

Most hotels and press facilities are within walking distance to the city centre. This location makes the entire area the event centre, where everything is naturally close together. Spectators can meet and talk about the race, and competitors can meet before and after the race. There will be an intense atmosphere in this unique setting.

Fan zones In addition to the festival setting at the start and finish area in the city centre we plan to carefully select a few hot spots on the course. These hot spots will be key pinnacles in the race with a festive atmosphere for the athletes and the spectators.

16 Dedicated areas will be available at the hot spots to rent for sponsors and other partners. They may want to invite business associates and give these the opportunity to watch from the front row the decisive moments of the MTB Marathon World Championships race.

For all spectators the hot spots will offer refreshments for sale.

Shuttle bus transportation will be available from the city centre to the fan zones along the course.

17 18 5 ORGANISATION

Denmark has developed a vast knowledge and experience in hosting international sports events. In Denmark hosting great sports events is part of a fully funded government strategy. The Danish organising committee consists of the City of Haderslev together with Sport Event Denmark, the Triangle Region and the Danish Cycling Federation.

The City of Haderslev is a true city of sports with teams in the best league in Denmark in handball, ice hockey and soccer. Haderslev has an ambitious strategy to be the best city in southern Denmark for both competitive and recreational sport. The potential to combine these two in the UCI MTB Marathon World Championships makes this event and Haderslev an extraordinarily great fit.

The Triangle Region is known as a region of a great combination of beautiful natural surroundings and vibrant and entrepreneurial city centres. The region puts high emphasis on sports both on elite levels and mass participation sports. Hosting major sports events are a vital point in the region’s strategy. Therefore the Triangle region has allocated resources both economically and organizationally for this specific purpose. Sport Event Denmark is the national sports event organisation and was established in 1994 by

19 the Danish government. Sport Event Denmark will be actively involved in the event planning and production and serves as a guarantee for knowledge sharing from other prestigious events as well as a guarantee for the financial aspect of the event.

Danish Cycling Federation was founded in 1907. The Federation has 33,000 members organized in 315 cycling clubs. Historically, Denmark is a very strong cycling nation with many wins at the Olympics and UCI World Championship in Track, Road Race, CX and MTB.

Besides the Copenhagen Bike City championships 2008-2011, the Danish Cycling Federation has been the proud organizer of Copenhagen Gran Fondo for several years and the Amateur Road World Championships 2015.

29 8 EASY AND CONVENIENT TRANSPORT

By air Billund International Airport is a convenient choice when travelling to the Triangle Region in Denmark. As well as ordinary air traffic, Billund Airport has budget flights and thereby cheap access to more than 40 international flight destinations. Visitors can also travel to Billund International Airport with a connecting flight from Copenhagen International Airport.

By Road and Train Haderslev is strategically located only 60 kilometers from the German border and well connected to the rest of , making domestic and international travel by car or train easy. All major road networks of Europe connect to the Triangle Region, which is located only 250 km north of Hamburg, Germany. The Triangle Region is linked to the rest of Europe by rail, with frequent connections to major cities in Europe.

30 Logistics The Triangle region is the main traffic hub of Western Denmark and the region is characterized by a very well developed infrastructure of railways, motorways, and bike paths. It is very easy to get around using public transportation, by car, or naturally, being in Denmark, by bike. The organising committee will assist with the transportation needs of teams.

31 9 ACCOMMODATION

the Triangle Region Its location at the centre of Denmark makes the Triangle Region a very popular choice for meetings, conferences and sporting events. The Region has more than 10,000 hotel beds, and can offer suitable solutions for all budgets. Additionally, there are summerhouses, hostels and campsites throughout the region. We can guarantee 100% accommodation for everyone.

As the official event hotel we propose Hotel Norden 500 metres from the start and finish area. This would be the most convenient and suitable hotel for the UCI family.

For national teams we propose the major hotels of the nearby city of Kolding. The largest three hotels are Comwell Hotel, Hotel Scandic and First Hotel offering modern facilities, with Wi-Fi and other standard of conveniences to suit varying needs and budgets. The hotels are located a 25 minutes drive away from the venue.

32 33 10 MARKETING AND PROMOTION

The cycling culture in Denmark is found in the daily lives and routines of young and old alike. Cycling is more than a sport, it is a way of life and the UCI MTB Marathon World Championships would aim at attracting a large number of mass participants and spectators to the event.

The Danish Cycling Federation, Sport Event Denmark and the Triangle Region are strong partners also when it comes to promoting and communicating events. The platforms and media relations of each of the partners (cycling media, local and national media and international sports and sport business media) will be addressed in the promotion of the event. Also, we are already in close contact with the destination management organisation “Destination Southern Jutland’’. Their involvement in the EU Interreg project “React’’ places cycling tourism as one of their main objectives. We will be able to utilize their network in marketing this event.

We will use various platforms and base the marketing of the event on a cross media strategy with a strong online focus. A dedicated webpage and an app would form the basis of the talks as well as communicating all essential information about the championships to both elite and mass participants and spectators.

34 Existing communication platforms such as the UCI webpage, UCI twitter and facebook accounts, the Danish Cycling Federation accounts and local Triangle Region and Haderslev accounts could also be used as drivers of promoting the event.

The year before the championships we plan a test event. We will test the event set-up and mass – and elite – participants will have the possibility to become familiar with the World Championships course and area. The test event will also be an opportunity for us to produce marketing material such as photos and video clips to be used in the campaign for the championships the following year.

35 City dressing The city of Haderslev has a long and strong tradition of dressing the city up for events – dedicated welcome banners would be installed at all motorway entrances, dressage of the busses would promote the event and a long list of other ideas could be provided. The signage of the event should be distinct and the colours and design will of course be used for the city dressing as well as for the promotion and marketing of the event in general.

36 37 11 MEDIA AND TV

Denmark is aware of the importance of providing the best possible working conditions for the media while hosting international sports events. We have proven experience making the media feel welcome and ensuring they have the tools necessary to cover the event.

Within the Danish event organization, there will be a designated communications and press team. This team will assist UCI and your partners in setting up the best possible facilities. Resources are allocated to ensure the conditions for the media remain a key priority of the event.

38 39 12 HADERSLEV

Magnificent Nature and Living History Haderslev was founded in the 12th century and being a part of Denmark’s borderland. Haderslev has played a remarkable role in several historical events, which have left their mark on the city’s everyday life. Everywhere you go you will get a glimpse of the cathedral and the narrow, cobblestone streets in the old town area are ideal for a cosy day in a city rich with atmosphere.

Visit the small shops and specialty entrepreneurs who offer a broad variety of culinary experiences and specialities like locally produced wine, beer, soft drinks, sausages and cheese. The City of Haderslev is not only historic but also contemporary. It is the home of Street dome, which is both one of Scandinavia’s biggest skate parks and a piece of award winning architecture.

Nature plays a big part of the identity of this southern part of Denmark and Haderslev is no exception. There plenty of family-friendly beaches facing the Little Belt not to mention the lakes, streams and the fjord are incredibly popular among anglers.

So set out on an adventurous journey being a passenger on a vintage train, try a paddle boat or put on a pair of hiking boots and enjoy the landscape and history of Haderslev.
