Early Marathi Cinema: Prabhat Studios and Social Respectability Hrishikesh Ingle Abstract The history of Marathi cinema, one of the first formations of regional cinema in India, can be traced from the studio era (1929-1953), specifically through Prabhat Studios. Prabhat Studios was situated in Kolhapur and Pune in western India. This paper analyzes two historical characteristics of Prabhat: how the studio imagined a cinema through linguistically specific regional content and forms of performance, and how this filmmaking was institutionalized as an example of artistic excellence, therefore conforming to the notion of social respectability. I argue that the filmmaking practices engendered by Prabhat aimed to project the studio, and cinema itself, as a respectable creative enterprise to Marathi society. This article accesses anecdotal biographies, archival materials, and existing Prabhat films to evaluate this tendency towards social respectability. A significant aspect of this historical account is the spatial spread, or movement, of early Marathi cinema, as it intersects other cultural forms to negotiate modernity. Chapter 1 Some issues in Early Indian Film Culture 1.1 Evans’ report and the early years of Indian cinema In 1921 on 3rd March W. Evans submitted a report entitled Cinema Publicity in India to Sir William Vincent, a government official in India. Evans begins the report by pointing out two requirements for publicity of cinema in India, in absence of which, the propagandists would misuse cinema which Evans terms as “most powerful weapon” (1). Evans states the requirements as: A. The extension of the industry which implies its release from the present improved facilities for bringing home the cinemas to the masses of the Indian population. B. Regulation of the programmes – a process which comprises on the one hand the negative aspect of barring out unsuitable, undesirable and useless films; and on the other, the positive aspect of supplying films of public interest, pleasure and utility. (1) While dealing with the section ‘A’ Evans states that the number of cinemas is very small for the huge population of India. Evans mentions some numbers in his report. According to Evan’s report in 1921 there were one hundred and seventy theatres in India (2). Both the sections A and B yield interesting facts about cinema in India. I would like to quote this report in some details here. Evans puts forth three reasons for his observation of theatres being not enough in India and they are as follows: First, practically, all the exhibitors are catering for the small European population who pay high prices for admission. The existing cinemas are generally out of date, and of small seating capacity. -

Indian Film Industry is one of the largest in the world and Aamchi Mumbai accounts for almost 60 per cent of film productions. Hence, it is the metonym of Indian cinema. Therefore, it is aptly called Bollywood on the lines of Hollywood, the centre of movie studios and movie stars. On this backdrop, Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari, popularly known as Film city, was established in 1977. Spread over 500 acre area with the natural ambience conducive for making a film or a TV serial, Chitranagari is being looked after and governed by the Maharashtra Film, Stage and Cultural Development Corporation, a State Government initiative. The people who come to earn their bread and butter take refuge in the Chitranagari which contributes 50 per cent of the revenue generated by Indian entertainment industry. It is one of the largest studio complex in India with ready-to-shot infrastructure such as AC studios, locals that provide scenic beauty and the atmosphere to fulfill their aspirations. It is an abode for people from different spheres of life, different strata of the society. People from every nook and corner of India come together here showing picture of a country in itself. -
