UPCOMING EVENTS 25 ANNEXTURE-1 IAB ACTIVITIES: January- November 2017 A joint meeting of the 21st EC and 22nd EC took place on 02 January 2017 at IAB Centre. Members of the 22nd EC started working for their tenure of next two years (2017-2018). Earlier, on the last week of December 2016, president of the 21st EC Ar. Abu Sayeed M Ahmed handed over the charge to Ar. Kazi Golam Nasir, president of the 22nd EC. Page | 1 The 22nd. Executive Council of the Institute of Architects Bangladesh officially started functioning from 1 January 2017. The council meets twice a month. Till date, there have been 20 no-s of EC meetings and 2 no-s of Special meetings. -

INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS BANGLADESH 02 ISSUE 6/21EC/JUL 2016 Earthquake and Architecture IAB Lecture Series event titled ‘Earthquake and Architecture’ was arranged on 23rd April 2016 at 5.00pm on the eve of first anniversary of Nepal quake. The speakers were Dr. Engr. Ali Akbar Mollick, Ar. Prajwal Hada [from Kathmandu on video] and Ar. Khondaker Hasibul Kabir. Ali Akbar Mollick received Master and Doctor of Engineering degrees on Building Structures Subject to Seismic Force in 1987 and 1990 respectively from The University of Hiroshima, Japan. He is an Assistant Professor at Civil Engineering Department of Rajshahi Engineering College until 1983, worked as a Research Engineer at Technical Research Institute of Fujita Corporation, Japan from 1990 to1999. Since then he is working as a structural engineering consultant for JICA, ADB, WB and MCC funded projects. Dr. Mollick writes especially on earthquake related topics in the Dhaka dailies to promote awareness and preparedness on earthquake to the people of Bangladesh. Ar. Prajwal Hada is active in Architecture, interior design, Landscape, LECTURE SERIES LECTURE Conservation as well as in Teaching. His work includes several awards winning projects, including the Civil Mall in Nepal. He received Master degree in urban planning from Institute of Engineering, Nepal in 2011, and Bachelor in Architecture from BUET, Dhaka in 2001. After the earthquake of Nepal, he has made presentations nationally and internationally about his studies and findings on the earthquake. He is voluntarily working to reconstruct school buildings in Nepal. The Oldest School of Nepal is one of them, which is also important for architectural conservation. -

Bashirul Huq Sharing Stories with the Young Eminent architect Bashirul Huq shared experiences and anecdotes from his architectural journey with a mostly young audience at the IAB Lecture Series event held on Thursday, 20th August 2015. The event was titled 'Ar. Bashirul Huq : Sharing Stories with the Young'. Ar. Bashirul Huq started with the stories of his childhood, his studies in Dhaka college and initial days of architecture education in the National College of Arts, Lahore, Pakistan. He talked about how he ended up studying and working in United States being patronized and somewhat financially assisted by the prominent structural engineer Fazlur Rahman Khan. His refusal to work in US to establish own practice in Dhaka was inspirational for young graduates. The IAB LECTURE SERIES IAB LECTURE architect’s friendly discussion on his initial commissions and setting up of his first office sorted - inspired the audience. Form the stories, Ar. Bashirul Huq moved to discuss some of his projects explaining how he perceives a project from beginning to end considering its context to the foremost. A number of projects including his own residence portrayed his sensitivity to nature, respect to culture and inclination to sustainability. He presented his Chittagong University Ain (law) Bhaban, a recent project in detail explaining how the contour was respected and utilized in the site which is just a kilometer away from Architect Muzharul Islam’s iconic Chittagong University complex. The project reflects his ideological stance on environment responsive architecture. -
