Tedashii This Time Around
TEDASHII THIS TIME AROUND “I’m very proud of the courage and bravery that I had to muster to go in and create music that is completely different than anything I’ve ever done, but still authentically who I am, especially in this new season,” Tedashii says with optimism as he describes his latest EP This Time Around. It’s the kind of optimism that is born from overcoming incredible tragedy. If Emerson is correct that “fractures well cured make us more strong,” Tedashii is indeed finding his strength. It has been well documented that in 2013, Tedashii suddenly lost his one-year-old son. After he passed away, Tedashii’s world came to an abrupt stop. Recording, touring and performing were replaced with mourning, anger and eventually counseling. Along the way, Tedashii relied on his faith but found strength and healing again when he returned to writing and recording. What followed was his fifth studio album Below Paradise, an album so painful and personal yet filled with hope. So when Tedashii speaks with a sanguine tone about life and creativity, he indeed understands that life does unfold in seasons. “I can’t pretend like I’m better and fine. I’m not. I’m getting better and things are going to be fine,” Tedashii says. “But, I make music for where I am now.” Indeed his new EP, This Time Around, can be summed up in one word: Growth. The first single, “Be Me” is a boisterous and sonically anthemic record that music fans can blast aloud in celebration of boldly being who you are supposed to be. -

An Ideological Critique of the Christian Hip-Hop Artist Lecrae Moore
Ohio Communication Journal Volume 56 March 2018, pp. 59-68 Rhetorical Re-Framing and Counter Narratives: An Ideological Critique of the Christian Hip-Hop Artist Lecrae Moore Robert Razzante jw Smith This essay explores the burgeoning popularity of Christian hip-hop artists. We examine how one particular artist (Lecrae Moore) manages to achieve narrative fidelity, cultural integrity, and ideological transformation through both his music and rhetorical presence. Utilizing an ideological methodological approach, the relationship between rap music, hip-hop culture and the black church is contextually addressed in this analysis. We conclude that a song with a secular aesthetic and an implicit sacred message may be more persuasive in challenging the dominant narratives of violence, drugs, and the objectification of women. Keywords: Hip-hop, religion, ideology, counter-narrative, cultural-aesthetics Fisher (1984) suggests one develops an epistemology through the use of narratives and storytelling. The credibility through what Fisher (1985) calls, narrative fidelity the degree to which it accords with the logic of good reasons: the soundness of its reasoning and the value of its -hop scholars posit rap music as a specific mode of storytelling that shares insight into the experience of black U.S. Americans (Miller, Hodge, Coleman, & Chaney, 2014; White Hodge, 2010). In a content analysis of the top-rated rap music videos for 2008, more than half of the songs referenced sexual misogyny, violence, and sexual desire whereas a third referred to religious symbols (Morgan et al., 2012). As a result, a religious hip-hop artist may lack credibility due to their message not maintaining narrative fidelity to the dominant narrative of what rap music videos portray. -
John Piper (Endorsed by David Slayton) and “Holy Hip-Hop”
John Piper (endorsed by David Slayton) and “Holy Hip-Hop” John Piper’s role in legitimizing and promoting hip-hop culture in the Church is an important aspect of his ministry that is sometimes overlooked. To really understand John Piper’s ministry we must examine his association with holy hip hop culture that is sweeping through the young, restless and reformed New Calvinist movement. The purpose of this article is to provide information on Piper’s involvement and support for holy hip-hop. In October 2006, John Piper invited rap artist Curtis, ‘the Voice’, Allen to perform in Bethlehem Baptist Church. The significance of this event is that it legitimized the so-called holy hip-hop movement among New Calvinists. The fact that a leading theologian of New Calvinism had publicly given his blessing to rap music in the Church was a symbolic event that opened the floodgates. If Piper was in favor of rap artists performing in the Church, who could be against it? In January 2008, Desiring God published a series of three videos that endorsed the ministry of rap artist Lecrae. In the videos Lecrae talks about his life growing up in the inner city, his conversion to Christ, and his unconventional ministry. http://youtu.be/c5L4on0AHik Desiring God and Reach Life Ministries in partnership The close relationship between John Piper and rap artist Lecrae is illustrated by the fact that their respective organizations, Desiring God Ministries and Reach Records, Rap artist Lecrae have been collaborating for a number of years. Associated with Reach Records is a group of rap artists known as ‘116 Clique’ (pronounced one-one-six click). -
