His team, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, announced Monday that Niedermayer's arthroscopic knee surgery was successful.

The Ducks said the operation resulted in the removal of a medial meniscus tear. It was performed in Los Angeles by Dr. Ronald Glousman.

The Ducks expect Niedermayer's recovery to take three to four weeks.

The injury forced the star blue-liner to withdraw recently from Team Canada for the Torino Olympics. The 32-year-old is the reigning Norris Trophy winner as the NHL's top defenceman, winning the award with the New Jersey Devils during the 2003-04 season – the last season before the NHL lockout. He signed with (CP File Photo) Anaheim as a free agent last year.

He has nine goals and 33 assists in 57 games for the Ducks this season.
