  • Selling Products on the Air Stepping Stone to Greater Things
Selling Products On The Air Stepping Stone To Greater Things “Lucky Strike tobaccos are the cream of the crop of many lands.” --- Frank Singiser Lincoln, Me. (DG)— If there is one thing I noticed about my work in researching radio’s golden age, you never know who appeared on the air as an announcer. While some people achieved a good living announcing radio programs, others were trying their best to sell products on the air while hoping for that big break--- and getting it. Some of the names mentioned here may surprise you, but this article is about some famous people in other lines of work in broadcasting who were announcers. Before he created and hosted TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES for Procter & Gamble products (Ivory Soap and later Duz), Ralph Edwards was selling Procter & Gamble products on the radio as an announcer. He was heard during the late 1930’s and early 1940’s as the announcer of daytime serials sponsored by Ivory Soap, Ivory Flakes, and Crisco--- Procter & Gamble’s most popular products. During the late 1930’s Edwards was selling Crisco on VIC & SADE, daytime radio’s most unique serial program. Instead of melodrama radio soaps were famous for, VIC & SADE provided humor that gave the listeners something to smile about when each episode was done. VIC & SADE was known as a funny program, but Edwards, the man who made hot seats, cream pies, and seltzer water famous, was serious when he presented the Crisco commercials . He informed the listeners if they wanted lighter cakes that melted in the mouths of everyone who ate it, they should use the New Gyro Churned Crisco in their cake recipe.

  • Multimodality of the TV Format
2021-4171-AJMMC – 1 Apr 2021 1 Multimodality of the TV Format 2 3 This article analyses the multimodal construction of various global TV 4 formats and the modes through which the format negotiates reinforcement of 5 its ideological bases, innovation, change and unlimited semiosis. 6 Theoretically, this work draws on social semiotics, multimodality and 7 political economy. Methodologically, it applies semiotic analysis to really 8 popular global formats. The results show that the format is an extraordinary 9 and powerful example of multimodality which speaks the global language of 10 signs. On the one hand, different languages and forms of communication 11 reinforce its ideologies, such as competition, primacy of money, 12 objectification of human bodies and consumerism; but the format also puts 13 forward a kind of self-propaganda; in many cases, in fact, its communication 14 aims to support and promote itself, even when this contradicts other 15 messages of the system; it is by being successful that producers make more 16 money, become more successful, may further influence the audience, and so 17 on. On the other hand, the languages and the forms adopted continually 18 renew the format, change the relationships between signifier and signified, 19 and create new symbols. This unlimited semiosis allows the format to refresh 20 or adapt its image, get more audience and remain competitive in the market. 21 22 Keywords: TV format, Who wants to be a millionaire, Wheel of fortune, 23 Multimodality, Social Semiotics 24 25 26 Introduction 27 28 This article analyses the multimodal character of four global TV formats: 29 Wheel of Fortune, The Price Is Right, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and 30 MasterChef.

  • Bill Cullen Biography Page 1 of 4
Bill Cullen Biography Page 1 of 4 William Lawrence Cullen was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on February 18th, 1920. At 18 months of age, Bill developed polio and was left with a permanent limp (something he later tried to hide on camera with varying Bill Cullen degrees of success). He wore a brace on one leg until he was ten. He attended South High School in Pittsburgh, where he earned a reputation for entertaining antics. He hosted student assemblies, clowned at school spelling bees, organized fund-raising shows and published his own school paper when he disagreed with the policy of the official one. He got along without the brace, but he was not allowed to take part in high school sports. "I did fine on the back lot," he said later. "Maybe I ran a lot slower, but I hit the ball a lot harder." Another harrowing experience of Bill's early life was an automobile accident in his junior year of high school, which put him in the hospital for nine months. In fact, some early profiles of Bill do not make mention of his polio and instead suggest that his limp resulted from the accident. During his senior year and despite the earlier accident, he developed an interest in midget auto racing, one of the scores of hobbies he would pursue On a 1977 episode of To Tell The Truth, Bill said over his life. At one point he dropped out of high his full name was school and briefly raced professionally, but under "William Lawrence pressure from his parents he went back for his Francis Cullen".

THE TV ENVIRONMENT RADICAL SOFTWARE Volume 2, Number 2 $1 .95 Since its beginnings in the 1930's, television has become a vital force in determining our culture, our values, and our fantasies . Despite what people think about commercial television, consider these facts: the TV set is on an average of five hours and forty-five minutes a day ; ninety-seven percent of all families in the United States have at least one TV set ; and between the ages of two and sixty-five, an average American will spend nine full years watching television-one-quarter of his waking life . Television has changed our conception of information, and has transformed the way we spend our time . It has altered our eating and sleeping habits. TV is an electronic babysitter for the young and the constant companion of the elderly. Because of television, people go out less at night, accept products more readily, and participate in events which they never would experience . Television has made possible a vast market of TV foods, TV gadgets, TV games, and TV furniture . Television has created TV spine, TV eyes, and the TV habit . With the continuing growth of television it will become more and more difficult to separate what is inside and what is outside The TV Environment.
