Instead I prefer to quote a sentence from Isaac Reed's eulogy of the publisher- poet, which explains the attractiveness of such a ' ' subject. It was his happiness,' he says, to pass the greater part of his life with those whose names will be revered by posterity.' Dodsley, indeed, seems most unjustly to have escaped the historian's notice. Beyond Mr Tedder's article in the Dictionary of National Biography, Mr Austin Dobson's entertaining ' vignette At Tully's Head,' and scattered, though useful, notes in various volumes of Notes and Queries, little if anything has of late been written about him. -

LITERARY COTERIES AND THE MAKING OF MODERN PRINT CULTURE Literary Coteries and the Making of Modern Print Culture, 1740–1790 offers the first study of manuscript-producing coteries as an integral element of eighteenth-century Britain’s literary culture. As a corrective to literary histories assuming that the dominance of print meant the demise of a vital scribal culture, the book profiles four interrelated and influential coteries, focusing on each group’s deployment of traditional scribal practices, on key individuals who served as bridges between networks, and on the esthetic and cultural work performed by the group. Literary Coteries also explores points of intersection between coteries and the print trade, whether in the form of individuals who straddled the two cultures; publishing events in which the two media regimes collaborated or came into conflict; literary conventions adapted from manuscript practice to serve the ends of print; or simply poetry hand-copied from magazines. Together, these instances demon- strate how scribal modes shaped modern literary production. betty a. schellenberg is Professor of English at Simon Fraser University, Canada, where she is a founding member of the Print Culture group and winner of a Dean’s Medal for Excellence. She has edited, for The Cambridge Edition of the Correspondence of Samuel Richardson, the volume of Correspondence Primarily on Sir Charles Grandison (1750–1754), which appeared in 2015. Her other books are The Professionalization of Women Writers in Eighteenth-Century Britain (Cambridge, 2005), Reconsidering the Bluestockings (2003, co-edited with Nicole Pohl), Part Two: Reflections on the Sequel (1996, co-edited with Paul Budra), and The Conversational Circle: Rereading the English Novel, 1740–1775 (1998). -

This thesis explores how the experience of reclusion in free landscapes and private gardens of Confucian China and Enlightenment Europe contributed to people’s moral improvement by cultivating good passions such as temperance, encouraging introspection, increasing the sense of responsibility towards society and rendering erudite individuals prompt to perform their public duty as politicians and civil servants. The thesis is based on the comparative analysis of philosophical concepts, works of art, poems and cultural practices in order to highlight the similarities and divergences between Chinese and European – particularly British and French - eremitic landscape dwelling. Taking into account the historical context in which two important systems of thought were developed in different geographic regions, the research brings together the state-sanctioned Confucian ethics with Enlightenment Deism which, inspired by Roman Stoics, played a pivotal role in the promulgation of reclusive landscape culture and the creation of non- geometrical gardens used as retreats in the eighteenth-century Europe. -

1.1 „The Round of Mr. Shenstone’s Paradise“ - Ein Rundgang durch die Leasowes Der Anfangspunkt für den Gang durch den Garten war das „Priory Gate“ (Abb. 1, Nr. 2), eine Mauerruine mit einem kleinen Torbogen36 aus unbehauenem Stein. Ein Aquarell von Shenstones Hand (Abb. 5) zeigt das „Priory Gate“ als ein Gebäude aus rohem Stein mit einem kleinen Rundbogen. Auf dieser Abbildung wird der Bogen von imitierten Schieß- scharten flankiert und von einem gotischen Vierpass bekrönt. Das Tor markierte den Anfang des „Priory Walk“,37 wo der Besucher den Rundgang beginnen sollte. Parnell beschreibt zwei Tore: „one thro’ stumps forming a sort of Root house the other thro’ the Ruind wall supposed part of the Priory”.38 Das erste Objekt auf dem Rundgang durch den Garten war ein kleines Wurzelhäuschen, „small root-house“ (S. 289/290) (Abb. 1, Nr. 4), an dem eine Tafel mit einem vierstrophigen Gedicht von William Shenstone angebracht war, das in einem Manuskript den Titel „An Inscription in my Grove; or Fairy Spell“39 trägt. Es ist mit der Unterschrift „Oberon“ versehen und spielt mit den Figuren der alten englischen Sage. Die literarische Figur des Zwergenkönigs Oberon geht auf ein Manuskript aus dem 13. Jahrhundert zurück und wurde von Shakespeare in seinem „A Midsummer Night's Dream“ übernommen.40 Bei Shakespeare ist Oberon ein Elfenkönig, der durch einen Fluch seine Feinde ausschaltet und in seinen Bann zieht. Das 18. Jahrhundert ist die Zeit der Shakespeare-Renaissance; Shenstone war mit den Werken des Dichters bestens vertraut, was die vielen Anspielungen und Zitate in seinen Briefen erkennen lassen.
