    Stephen Hawking Brief Biography Professor Stephen William Hawking was born on 8th January 1942 (exactly 300 years after the death of Galileo) in Oxford, England. His parents' house was in north London but during the second world war Oxford was considered a safer place to have babies. When he was eight his family moved to St. Albans, a town about 20 miles north of London. At the age of eleven, Stephen went to St. Albans School and then on to University College, Oxford (1952); his father's old college. Stephen wanted to study mathematics although his father would have preferred medicine. Mathematics was not available at University College, so he pursued physics instead. After three years and not very much work, he was awarded a first class honours degree in natural science. In October 1962, Stephen arrived at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge to do research in cosmology, there being no-one working in that area in Oxford at the time. His supervisor was Dennis Sciama, although he had hoped to get Fred Hoyle who was working in Cambridge. After gaining his PhD (1965) with his thesis titled 'Properties of Expanding Universes', he became, first, a research fellow (1965) then Fellow for Distinction in Science (1969) at Gonville & Caius college. In 1966 he won the Adams Prize for his essay 'Singularities and the Geometry of Space-time'. Stephen moved to the Institute of Astronomy (1968), later moving back to DAMTP (1973), employed as a research assistant, and published his first academic book, The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time, with George Ellis.

    Stephen Hawking By Ryan Fleming Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford, England on 8th January 1942. A Little About He died on 14th March 2018. Stephen He was a theoretical physicist. Hawking: He was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease aged 21. Education Hawking attended St Albans school in 1952, after passing his Eleven Plus a year early. He again started his further education early, aged 17 he studied Physics at Oxford, and graduated with a B.A. Physics in 1962. He then went on to complete his Ph.D. in Physics at Cambridge in 1966. Family Stephen Hawking’s parents were both medical researchers. He was married to Jane Wilde in 1965, they had 3 children together, Robert, Lucy and Timothy. They later separated, and he married Elaine Mason in 1995. Disability Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease aged just 21. It is a fatal disease, that affects the motor neurones in the brain and spinal cord. He was expected to live just 2 years after the diagnosis. By the late 1970s Hawking used a powered wheelchair, he liked to be a bit naughty when driving his wheelchair, showing his humorous side. Stephen Hawking is well known for his computer sounding voice, after his speech deteriorated, he started to use an equaliser, where he selected from around 3000 scanned words and phrases. Why was Stephen Hawking famous? Stephen Hawking studied time, the theory of relativity, laws of physics, gravity, and quantum mechanics. Though he is best known for his discovery that black holes emit radiation which can be detected by a special instrument.

There has been talk about renovating Pierce School for the last few years. Renovation would mean a lot of disruption to Pierce and the Pierce community. We don’t know when it will happen but we know that administrators are working on a plan. We wondered how students and staff members felt about this. First, we spoke to Principal Ryan-Miller to get her input on the topic. She feels that Pierce is in need of renovation. There are too many kids for the building to hold, and there are a lot of places in the school that are not wheelchair accessible. Also, she said, Pierce is an old building that is in need of upgrades and repairs. We created and administered a survey to get a snapshot of how students and staff at Pierce feel about a renovation: We asked 29 people (students and staff members) whether or not they support renovation. You can see the data below. To the people that support renovation we asked “what would you most like to change Should we renovate? about Pierce?” Most people (12 of the 17) Yes No said thatthey would want classroom walls in Teachers 6 1 the renovated building (the other five prioritized better use of space, better playgrounds, air conditioning, and better K-5 students 5 11 bathrooms).
