MARCH IS WALKING SCHOOL BUS MONTH. Find out what a Walking School Bus is and join a Walking School Bus. What is a Walking School Bus? A Walking School Bus is similar to a normal school bus except children walk to and/or from school along a designated route, under the supervision of adult volunteers (often parents), who act as the Walking School Bus driver. Walking School Buses reduce the number of cars on the road, making our environment safer and cleaner, and they provide exercise for children in a fun and social way. For more information: Sandra Fowler WSB Co-ordinator 021 533479

CRICKET 2019 During week 4 CBS attended two super 8 cricket tournament days organised by Takapuna Cricket Club. On Tuesday 26 February, we had three year five and six boys’ teams compete in The Championship League for year five and six boys. On the same day we also had three year five and six girls’ teams competing in The Hockley League for year five and six girls. All our teams represented our school exceptionally well and a lot of great cricket was played. What was incredibly noticeable on this day was the great sportsmanship shown by all of our players. Our students were great ambassadors for our school and put our school values of respect, kindness and resilience into practice. Our year six boys CBS Red team (Jakson Cunningham, Liam Kristiffor, Oliver Brimelow, Ewan McKone, Piri Wilson, Oscar Chandler, Mark Jennings and Henry Barr) made it through to the final of the championship competition. The team showed great team work and focus and successfully defended our title for the fourth year running. Our girls’ teams played exceptionally well this year and there was very little between the teams. For the first time CBS made it through to the girls final with not only one CBS team, but two! Our CBS Gold team played our CBS Silver team with the Gold team (Alex Twose, Isobel Houliston, Arabella Nevile, Charlotte Houliston, Miya Stott, Isabella McCarthy, Lucy Henderson and Isabella Tan) coming out as the overall winners for the day. Well done girls! The following day we had three year four teams participating in the Hadlee League for mixed (boys and girls) teams and two year five and six boys’ teams competing in the McCallum League for year five and six boys. It was awesome to see so many of our year four girls participating in our year four teams and giving cricket a good go. Special mention goes to the year four CBS Green team (Archer Lumsden, Sasha Dudding, Raphael Anderson, Krish Ranchhod, Jacqlon Toura, Hunter Brodie, Jason Inglis, Tayte Stott and Harry Chandler) who got through to the final against Forest Hill School. Our year four Green team finished up as overall winners for the day. Our year five and six boys’ Green team (Blake Hulme, Jacob Humphries, Caleb Maunder, Matthew Ramsay, Arran Brodie, Sam Rawstron, Noah Geelen and Levi Harvey) are also to be congratulated on making it into their respective final. They played some great cricket and gave their best but unfortunately they couldn’t quite get there and finished up as runners up to a very strong Mairangi Bay team. Well done to them on a great day of cricket. All of our teams are to be congratulated on their good display of sportsmanship throughout the tournament and for the top effort they put into their games. Thank you to all the parents and family members who came down to support the CBS teams and to those who helped manage the teams on the side lines. We appreciate all your help and support with carpooling too. Without all this help and support we wouldn’t be able to have so many students involved.

NUMBER 6 11 March 2019 Former Student Success – Blake McGlashan CBS Year 6 2013

NEWS ARTICLE Seb Menzies and Blake McGlashan find it hard to comprehend what they have achieved after winning the in Newport. Not only did they win their first world title little more than a year after jumping in the boat together but they also won by a whopping 48 points over Spain’s Elias Leonard Aretz Queck and Pablo Garcia Cranfield. “It’s almost unbelievable,” McGlashan said on his way to the prizegiving. “We haven’t been in the class that long so we’re pretty new to it. We didn’t really think we could get this far this quickly.” What is also remarkable is their age - Menzies is 13 and McGlashan 15 - and they did it in the open division. They sailed consistently well all week, winning five of their 12 races, including two in gold fleet, and only once finished outside the top six. It was after the first day that they reassessed their ambitions. “As soon as we had that first race, we knew we could get off the start line [well] and had good speed,” McGlashan said. “It was a great confidence booster.” What will also add to their confidence is a look through past winners of the 420 world championships. On that list is Carl Evans and , who won in both 2006 and 2007 before going on to represent New Zealand in the men’s 470 at the 2008 Olympics. and (2007) and Alex Maloney and Bianca Babrich-Bacher (2009) were first females in their respective years. “[Burling] is probably the best sailor New Zealand has ever had and to follow in his footsteps is a bit crazy,” McGlashan admitted. An illustration of their progress is the fact Menzies and McGlashan were 41st - and fifth of the New Zealand teams - at the 2017 420 world championships in Perth over the New Year. They then won selection as New Zealand’s entry at last month’s youth sailing world championships in Corpus Christi, finishing a very credible fifth. “That was a big confidence booster,” McGlashan said. “We figured out then we could start in a competitive fleet and that our fleet tactics were pretty good.” Results and standings after the final day of the 420 world championships in Newport today: Open (73 boats) 1st: Seb Menzies / Blake McGlashan (NZL) 6 1 1 3 1 5 4 1 1 (12) 2 6 - 31 points 2nd: Elias Leonard Aretz Queck / Pablo Garcia Cranfield (ESP) 10 23 3 2 4 (25) 12 5 2 15 1 2 - 79 pts
