Aspiration, Consumer Culture, and Individualism in Les Belles-Sœurs Abstract The premise of Michel Tremblay’s revolutionary 1968 play, Les Belles-Sœurs, is a working bee. A group of working-class women gather to paste a million trading stamps, won in a sweepstakes, into booklets that once full can be redeemed for household goods. As the guests surreptitiously pilfer what they see as their hostess’s underserved windfall, their actions problematize the links between the individualistic aspects of consumer and material culture and the communal values they share as members of Quebec’s working class. Taking consumer culture and material desire as a starting point, this essay considers the relationship between the individual and the collective inherent in such matters and situates it in relation to the ways in which consumer culture, individual advancement, and national projects of collective betterment, namely the Quiet Revolution, are implicitly treated in the play.

The work in question, a play by Michel Tremblay called Les Belles-Soeurs, is particularly interesting as it is the first working-class theatre production, written in joual, shown in public in the "new" Québec of the 1960s. It thus illustrates a project of cultural critique in newspapers that appealed to class- and culturally-specific audiences. Tremblay's play, first produced in 1968 and later translated into more than twenty languages including Yiddish and Japa­ nese, is a work of popular culture, not only because of its object, which is to relate a moment in the everyday lives of fifteen working-class women, but especially for the language it uses.

    From the “Great Darkness” to the “Quiet Revolution”: Michel Tremblay’s Reinterpretation of the Frontier between the Francophone East and the Anglophone West of Montreal in Some Night My Prince Will Come By Marie-Claude Legault “Throughout my childhood I hadn’t even known that Anglos existed, that Montreal was divided in two, with the east end belonging to us Francophones and the west to the Anglos, that there was a conflict between the two solitudes, as we used to say, a conflict dating back to the Conquest in 1760 and that it was doubtful we’d ever see a way out of it” (26). “For a long time I’d thought it strange that there were two Santas, one, Francophone at Dupuis Frères, the other, Anglophone, at Eaton’s. Every December my mother took me to meet both of them and I asked each one for the same presents, in French, suspecting that the second didn’t understand me” (27). Introduction From 1944 to 1959, the province of Québec lived in an oppressive atmosphere called “période de la grande noirceur.” In this period of cultural, social, and sexual darkness, the Catholic Church controlled the government of Maurice Duplessis and the lives of countless Canadiens Français (the term Québécois was not used yet). Families were encouraged to procreate. Birth control was strictly forbidden. As a result, families of 10, 15, and even 20 children were common. Of course, most of those families were extremely poor and destitute. The Catholic Church also controlled what people could read and what people could watch.

To conclude my thesis, I have put forth my own translation of this play.

    93 NICOLE NOLETTE Translated Québec Theatre in the New Millennium: Established Authors and a Few New Trends In 1988, Québec theatre in translation became "awesome" (Conlogue qtd. in Koustas 1995, 98). "Toronto loves Québec," unironically exclaimed the title of a 2012 article in the Québec theatre magazine Jeu (Côté 2012, 49). In another aptly named article, "From 'Homespun' to 'Awesome:' Translated Quebec Theater in Toronto," Jane Koustas chronicles the evolving response to French-Canadian drama by the main target of its translations: English Canada. Critics attending the translation of Gratien Gélinas' Bousille et les justes at the Royal Alexandra in Toronto in 1962, for example, insisted on its "homespun" qualities, "emphasiz[ing] that which conformed to their vision of quaint, rural Quebec while dismissing the larger questions addressed by the play" (Koustas 1995, 86). Paired with indifference or hostility, this response subsisted through the emergence of what Michel Bélair (1973) called nouveau théâtre québécois, which engaged with the sociopolitical specificity of a rapidly modernizing Québec in the vernacular of Montreal's working class, joual. The dialect's mix of French and English, as well as the context embedded within it, caused issues for translators, who struggled to find an equivalent in English (Bosley 1988). The production of Michel Tremblay's Forever Yours, Marie-Lou at the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto in 1972 showed how the nouveau théâtre québécois, whose sociopolitical particularities were considered undigestible to critics, could be read as universal or "Canadian" (Koustas 1995, 93). Perhaps predictably then, critics adopted "a less defensive, more open attitude" (82) in the 1980s, when theatre artists in Québec started to craft work that was considered "more universal" (97) in scope, or more interested in constructing and deconstructing the possibilities of drama, theatre and performance, as well as in producing pieces that could travel internationally, as in the imagistic and multilingual travelling works of Robert Lepage or Gilles Maheu.

According to the political scientist Kenneth McRoberts, "the Quiet Revolution represented a new depar- ture for Quebec: the combining of nationalism with liberali~m."~This view has become so entrenched in the Quebec imagination that nationalism has come to be seen as the only means of safeguarding liberalism in the province. According to some historians, the fate of Quebec's liberal traditions depends entirely upon the province's ability to achieve greater independence from Canada. Michel Sarra-Bournet, for example, notes that failure to achieve inde- pendence reinforces a defensive brand of nationalism. "C'est lorsqu'il n'a pu trouver d'expression politique que le nationalisme s'est rBfugiC dans les bas- tions culture1 et linguistique," he writes, warning, "la non-rtsolution de la ques- tion nationale au Quebec comporte le danger d'un retour au nationalisme eth- niq~e."~GCrard Bouchard agrees, wondering, "en l'absence de la souverainete, quels sont donc les modbles de rechange qui permetteraient d'Cviter un retour en force de l'ethnicite, un nouveau repli sur la survivance, un relance de revendications stCriles aupr6s du governement canadien, le renonciation au rgve d'ouverture et d'kmancipation d'une francophonie originale en territoire quCbe- coi~?"~ Some politicians have also stressed the ties between liberalism and nation- alism in their efforts to drum up support for Quebec independence.

    Canadian Theatre in Latin America: 75 Translation and Dissemination Canadian Theatre in Latin America: Translation and Dissemination Hugh Hazelton¹ Submetido em 30 de junho e aprovado em 18 de agosto de 2019. Abstract: Canadian theatre has achieved a high level of popularity in Latin America and is now widely translated both for production and publication. Much of this success has been a mutual affair, the result of exchange programs between theatre companies in Mexico, Argentina, and other countries with those in Canada. This initiative largely originated in Quebec, which established bilateral agreements with theatre groups and cultural agencies from other countries in Latin America, especially Mexico, as early as the 1980s, and followed them up with theatre festivals, tours, and a continual stream of funding for translations. English Canadian dramatists as varied as Judith Thompson, Steve Galluccio, and Michael Mackenzie have been translated into Spanish, as well as a plethora of Quebec playwrights, from Michel Tremblay and Évelyne de la Chenelière to Chantal Bilodeau and Suzanne Lebeau. Latin Americans living in Canada have also played a role. A whole generation of experienced Latin American translators has arisen to meet this challenge, many of them in Mexico encouraged by the French playwright, actor, and translator Boris Schoemann, who immigrated to Mexico twenty years ago. This essay, then, will give an overview of the development and diffusion of Canadian theatre in Latin America, with particular attention to the cultural exchange between the two regions and to the crucial role that translation has played in the evolution of Latin American interest in Canadian drama.

LITTLE HILE ENGLISH Canadians are engaged in a never-ending identity crisis, the W cultural uniqueness of French Canadians has been ensured by the very fact. that they are a small minority in a largely English-speaking continent. Furthern10re, the threat of assimilation has made the French-Canadian elite particularly anxious to promote the unique features of their culture. But to recognize that a people has a distinct historical identity is one thing, to describe it without resorting to stereotypical images quite another. The concept of a cultural identity is an abstract one, and it is largely defined by writers and artists whose particular biases and motivations act as distorting filters to the reality of popular hopes, beliefs, and daily lives. The ideology of nationalism in particular has fostered images which have often been closer to some mythological ideal than to life as it was actually lived. Nowhere is this more true than in French-speaking Quebec where the writing of history and literature has traditionally playedan importantrole in the struggle for "la survivance." While gritty realism and scientific analysis have long since replaced the romantic vision fostered by novelists and historians of the past, a new consensus has remained elusive in large part because ofthe intensity ofthe ongoing nationalist debate and the increasing complexity of modern Quebec society.

    “At the end of everything”: Confession and Critique in Michel Tremblay’s Damnée Manon, Sacrée Sandra Myra Bloom University of Toronto amnée Manon, Sacrée Sandra, the eleventh and final instalment Din Michel Tremblay’s Belles-Soeurs cycle, is a damning critique of the social conservatism of the Duplessis era (known in French as la grande noirceur [“the Great Darkness”]). The play comprises two contrapuntal monologues, referred to in the stage directions as “confessions,” delivered by seemingly opposite characters: Manon, the religious zealot, espouses the very conservatism and repression that Sandra, the outlandish transves- tite, decries in her hypersexualized excoriation of social convention. By the end of the play, however, it becomes clear that both characters represent equally pathological responses to their circumstances, their physical and existential stasis encoding the legacy of the Catholic Church in Québec. Tremblay’s critique is heightened by the parodic use of a confessional discourse that is, in its originary form, a hallmark of Catholic dogma. By mobilizing the language of confession to speak out against the social repression perpetuated by the Church, Tremblay articulates an incho- ate praxis of resistance; although the characters’ confessions record their social entrapment, their parodic redeployment of the dominant discourse anticipates the possibility of social renewal.
