Today we celebrate 39 years of making children’s dreams come true, and we honor an outstanding philanthropist in our community as the 2020 Dreammaker of the Year. Each year we recognize a special Dreammaker who is committed to making a difference in the lives of the sick children who heroically battle life-threatening illnesses, but never give up their dreams. This year, the award goes to Kevin Kiermaier of the Tampa Bay Rays. Kevin is known not only for his career in Major League Baseball with the Tampa Bay Rays, but also for his legacy of helping people throughout our community. You’ll learn more about his efforts and the impact they have had on the Children’s Dream Fund and the children and families we serve. Dreams provide a much needed escape from the world of doctor visits and painful treatments which our children have learned to consider “normal”. Each dream is uniquely crafted for the child by our Dream Coordinators and serves as a cause for celebration as well as symbol of hope for the dream child and their family. Thank you to Grace Davis for sharing her journey and spending this special day with us. I am honored to be the Chair of the Children’s Dream Fund Board of Directors as we host this important event. Today, over 100 children are waiting for a dream-come-true, and our list grows weekly. With a rich history and a solid foundation on which to build, the funds raised today, and the friendships made, will help to create an even brighter future for the Children’s Dream Fund which in 39 years has never denied a deserving child their dream-come-true. You can join Kevin Kiermaier and become a Dreammaker today by volunteering your time or by providing financial support...it’s just that simple! Thank you for helping us ensure that every courageous child diagnosed with a life-threatening illness has the opportunity to experience the hope of a brighter tomorrow and a dream come true! Sincerely, David Allen, Chair Board of Directors Children’s Dream Fund 2020 DREAMMAKER AWARD KEVIN KIERMAIER Although Kevin Kiermaier may not be a Florida native, he sure has made Tampa Bay his home. Kiermaier was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2010, giving our community 10 years of his incredible talent and service. Throughout his professional baseball career, Kiermaier has racked up almost 600 hits, over 300 runs, and nearly 70 home runs. In his rookie season, he appeared in 108 games and started in 89. He even led the team with 8 triples. It is safe to say that Mr. Kiermaier has contributed an enormous amount to the Tampa Bay Rays over the years. With each passing year, Kiermaier has continued to hone his talent, gaining more and more popularity among fans across the nation. In 2015 he earned his first Rawlings Gold Glove Award, the tenth in Rays history, and only the second in Rays outfielding. Kiermaier went on to receive his second Gold Glove Award in 2016, joining a prestigious few that have won more than one in their professional careers. In 2019, he received his third Gold Glove, tying Rays alum, Evan Longoria, for the most in franchise history and becoming the third center fielder to win three Gold Gloves since Rawlings began the award in 2011. When Kevin is not breaking baseball records, he and his wife, Marisa, are giving back to their community. They donate to and support the Ronald McDonald House of St. Petersburg, and the University of Tampa baseball team. He has received multiple recognitions and awards for his philanthropic contributions to the Tampa Bay community. Kevin was the recipient of last year’s Paul C. Smith Champion Award, which is given to the player who best exemplifies the spirit of true professionalism on and off the field, and was the Rays’ Roberto Clemente Award winner and national nominee. In our biased opinion, Kiermaier’s contributions to the Children’s Dream Fund have been his most notable services. Kevin and his wife Marisa have appeared in the past five consecutive Rays On the Runway events, as well as this year’s Rays OFF the Runway, helping us raise funds to make dreams come true for children with life-threatening illnesses. Last season, with a significant gift from Kevin and Marisa, we created the Kiermaier’s Kids Program. “After working with the Children’s Dream Fund for the past number of years at the annual Rays fashion show, my wife and I decided to take the next step to make dreams come true. We started a program called Kiermaier's Kids” -Kevin Kiermaier The Kiermaier’s Kids program made six children’s dreams come true this past year, including Disney trips, a car make-over, and even granted 16-year-old Grace her dream of attending a Queen concert with her dad. All of the kids were invited to meet Kevin at batting practice and attend a Rays game (check presentation and meet and greet pictured below). Kiermaier’s passion for assisting the Children’s Dream Fund comes from a feeling he “just can’t describe” while being around such brave children. We are so thankful for the dreams that Kevin and Marisa have made come true in the past and we cannot wait to see his legacy continue in the dreams they help fulfill in the future. We are grateful for Kevin Kiermaier’s support of our dream children, and are proud to present him with the 2020 Dreammaker Award. THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS! PETERSBURG – The Chiefland Lady Indians who are 2014, 2015 and 2016 Florida High School Athletic Association Division 1A State Softball Champions were honored Sunday (Sept. 25) by a short presentation hosted by the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. The most recently past set of Lady Indians Softball Team coaches and team members are: Head Coach Wayne Weatherford and Lena Weatherford as scorekeeper; and Assistant Coach Brian Gore, Assistant Coach Jimmy Anderson and Assistant Coach Harland Stalvey; and players Sydney Parks (#11) at second base; Emily Hallman (#14) as catcher; Takiya London (#4) as shortstop; Lauren Parker (#3) at center field; Morgan Anderson (#2) at first base; Samantha Rolfe (#9) at left field; Erika Gilliam (#33) at third base; Hannah Gore (#5) at right field; Lauren Stalvey (#7) as starting pitcher; Kensley Durrance (#20) as relief pitcher; and available substitutes Tataneisha Barnes (#12); Aleaha Rhoomes (#1); Taylor Simpson (#19); Maci Thomas (#15); Simone White (#22); and Karlie Meeks (#10). HOW IT HAPPENED For this to happen, first it took the Chiefland Lady Indians Softball Team’s winning three consecutive annual FHSAA 1A State Championship titles. And then there was a nudge from a Lady Indians fan who saw a potential for a good event.

The Boston Red Sox Sunday, March 17, 2019 * The Boston Globe Cash-conscious Rays believe things are looking up Peter Abraham The exact numbers are to be determined, but the Tampa Bay Rays will start the season with a payroll approximately $177 million less than the Red Sox and $142 million below the Yankees. But a recent visit to Tampa Bay’s spring training clubhouse in Port Charlotte, Fla., found a team that sincerely believes it’s capable of winning the American League East. The Rays were 90-72 last season, 18 games behind the historically dominant Red Sox and 10 behind the second-place Yankees. That’s a lot of ground to make up. But the Rays don’t fear their well-funded division rivals. Tampa Bay was 17-21 against the Sox and Yankees last season with seven of those losses by one run. They Rays were 13-7 against the Astros, Athletics, and Indians. Overall, the Rays were 41-25 after the All-Star break. The Sox were 40-24 and the Yankees 38-29. “They have something good going on over there,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. Center fielder Kevin Kiermaier felt a young team grew up over the course of last season. “We showed we could beat the best teams,” he said. “It was a good example that we could handle all the superstars on the opposition. The mind-set here is great. There’s a lot of talent on this roster.” Lefthander Jalen Beeks has seen both sides. He was drafted by the Sox and made his major league debut last season before being traded to the Rays on July 25 for Nathan Eovaldi.

  • Padding the Stats: a Study of MLB Player Performance in Meaningless Game- Situations
Padding the Stats: A Study of MLB Player Performance in Meaningless Game- Situations Evan Hsia1, Jaewon Lee2 and Anton T. Dahbura3 Department of Computer Science Johns Hopkins University Abstract This paper presents the concept of Meaningless Game-Situations (MGS) in Major League Baseball (MLB), defined as situations in which a team has a 95% chance or greater of winning the game given the score at that particular inning in the game. We determine the run differentials for each inning that yield a 95% chance or greater of winning the game based on 2013-2016 MLB statistics and look at individual batter performances under MGS. We argue that including a split for MGS in major baseball statistical references should be considered. I. Introduction Hope springs eternal, especially in the game of baseball. But should it? Perhaps the absence of a game clock in baseball, unlike other major sports, creates the illusion that anything is possible, and in particular that one’s team can overcome even the largest of deficits, even late in the game. And, indeed, significant comebacks from behind are possible, but are so unlikely that in some cases they’re considered to be historic. For instance, in the game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies on June 8, 1989 the Pirates scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning. The Pirates’ radio broadcaster, Jim Rooker, proclaimed that if the Phillies were to come back from the 10-run deficit he would “walk home”. As fate would have it, the Phillies ended up winning the game 15-11, prompting Mr.
