I am writing this on a sunny day in June! Yes sunny, not yet warm but showing promise of things to come. I hope that as you read this summer has truly arrived and that we are all enjoying the glories of a beautiful English summer; well I can hope! Of course English summers like holidays are unpredictable. I seem to remember my school holidays as being filled with long endlessly sunny days and no rain or clouds, of course they couldn’t have really been constantly like that but memory often plays tricks, painting memories with a rosy hue. More recent holiday memories tell a truer tale but are no less precious or enjoyable. It’s good to have a change or a rest or just to have a little more time to spend with those we love. Church attendances are often down during the summer holidays, understandably so; but although we may be busy enjoying our summer activities it’s really important that in our business we don’t forget our God. All that we have, are and experience is a gift from God and in order to start a new season, refreshed in body, mind and spirit we need to keep touching base with our Heavenly Father; including thanking him for time well spent and for the wonders of his world. Not all holidays are relaxing or stress free and contact with God can sooth our minds as much as the sun can sooth our bodies. I found the following on the Internet, which I thought very apt it’s called, take time. Take time to claim your strength; this is a gift from God Take time to have fun; it is God’s way of teaching you your strengths. Take time to grow yourself; only you can grow you. Take time to trust yourself; God trusts you. Take time to be self-reliant; it is better than being dependent. Take time to share with others; they will bless you and you will bless them. Take time to have hope; you are a child of God. I have also found a couple of short prayers from various sources suitable for holiday prayer that I hope you find useful. 8 Lord God, We put ourselves into your hands, and pray that You will bless us and our families during the wonderful months of summer. May we all help make our home a place of relaxation, joy, love, peace and safety. May we be generous and considerate; not thinking only about ourselves, but helping others enjoy the blessings of summertime. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen A Summer Blessing May you walk with God this summer in whatever you do and wherever you go. May you talk to God this summer and every day and in every situation. May you talk with God every day. Prayer for the summer break Lord, what about you and me? I don’t want to forget you just because I’m away from my normal routine. Keep close to me, Lord, and remind me that my relationship with you should never take a break. Wherever you go or whatever you do, either holidaying at home or venturing further afield I do wish you a very happy, safe and refreshing summer. Best wishes Glen. • A Visitors Guide To
A Guide to St Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church Scarisbrick Mary Ormsby, Veronica & Tom Massam 1 This guide is dedicated to all parishioners and Priests, past and present, who over the generations have built and supported the Church and Catholic school in Scarisbrick. 2 Acknowledgements This guide would never have been brought to fruition without the help, support and encouragement of many people especially parishioners who loaned old photographs, alas we did not have space to include them all. The research itself has been a team effort over many years and we would like to thank the archivists and staff at Lancashire Records Office and the National Archives where most of the research was done. In addition Abbot Geoffrey Scott of Douai Abbey has provided much useful information and insight. Count Jean-Denis de Castéja, great grandson of Marie Emmanuel Count de Castéja who along with his father was responsible for the building of St Elizabeth’s, has provided many family photos and personal details. He continues to inspire and support our work. Thanks are also due to the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society who allowed us to publish the map showing the sites of the mediaeval crosses, the Liverpool Echo and the Trustees of Douai Abbey for permission to reproduce photographs of members of the parish who became priests. As a group of scientists we needed help with our grammar, punctuation and editing, many thanks to Joe McNamara, Joan Taylor and Fr Hugh Somerville Knapmann OSB who have spent many hours helping to shape this final version of the guide.

Additional Note: Requests for information from the public register can be obtained from the Customer Service Centre located at the Preston Area Office. This Action Plan has been produced following the consultation exercise carried out between February and April 1996. This Catchment Management Plan was initiated by a predecessor authority, the National Rivers Authority. This plan therefore deals with the management and protection of the water environment. The plan provides an overview of the catchment, but concentrates on the issues, highlighting timescales and costs where known. For detailed catchment information and supporting text relating to these issues, the reader should refer back to the Alt/Crossens Consultation Report (February 1996). This report is intended to be used widely and may be quoted, copied or reproduced in any way, provided that the extracts are not quoted out of context and that due acknowledgement is given to the Environment Agency. Front Cover: River Alt at Croxteth Park FOREWORD The Alt/Crossens Catchment Management Plan is a major stride forward in achieving the Agency's vision for the future improvement and integrated management of the catchment.
