The Mission of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to the European Union avails itself of this opportunity to renew to the European Commission - Protocol Service - the assurances of its highest consideration. ___________________ CM 4723/12 2 EN CURRICULUM VITAE Mr. Eldred Edison Bethel served as Consul General of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas to New York from October 2002 -December 2007. Mr. Bethel is a former broadcast journalist. He started his career as a Cub Reporter with the Nassau Tribune in 1959. In 1963 he joined the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas (ZNS Radio) as a sports reporter. During his tenure at the Broadcasting Corporation of the Bahamas, Mr. Bethel served as Sports Editor, News Director, General Manager of the Northern Service on two occasions. Manager of Special Projects, Assistant General Manager of Radio and Television News and retired from the Broadcasting Corporation of the Bahamas as Deputy General Manager. He also served as Executive Director of the Bahamas Government's Information Services. During his distinguished career Mr. Bethel covered many International events, including the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, the 1975 championship boxing match in Paris, France, when Bahamian boxer Elisha Obed won The Bahamas first world Boxing title, the World Junior Middleweight championship. Mr. Bethel was coordinator of Radio Bahamas live coverage of the July 10, 1973 Bahamas Independence celebrations and co-anchor of the historic flag raising ceremony at Clifford Park, Nassau. Mr. Bethel appeared on the inaugural broadcast of Bahamas Television when it was launched on air on July 4, 1977. He was the first News Anchor for the Broadcasting Corporations Television Channel. In 1974 Mr. Bethel was the first broadcaster to host a live regular radio talk show, "Action Line" Fridays at 8pm. Mr. Bethel has produced scores of local radio and television documentaries and hosted a weekly public affairs program 'Perspective" on Radio and Television for 10 years. He has covered all the Royal visits to the Bahamas by Queen Elizabeth 11 and other members of the British Royal Family. During Queen Elizabeth 11 royal visit to the Bahamas in 1994 Mr. Bethel served as the Government's Press Liaison officer. He has covered six Commonwealth Heads of Government meetings from The Bahamas to India and more than a dozen Caricom heads of Government meetings in the Caribbean. CM 4723/12 3 EN Mr. Bethel broadcast live from the United Nations Headquarters in New York in September 1973 the Bahamas admission to the UN . He was the first Bahamian broadcaster ' to report live via satellite from London, England, the 1986 Summit on South Africa. Mr. Bethel anchored on radio and television Bahamian General Election results from 1972 to 1997. Mr. Bethel was born in West End, Grand Bahama on November 11, 1940 to Mr. and Mrs. George Bernard Bethel. He is the eldest of seven children. His mother was a housewife/seamstress and his father was a Government Wireless Operator. Mr. Bethel attended public schools in Grand Bahama, Eleuthera and New Providence. He attended secondary school at St. John's College, Nassau, Bahamas, and received a Diploma in Mass Communications from Ryerson Polytechnical College, Toronto, Canada. Mr. Bethel served as President of the Bahamas Press Club and during his tenure led a delegation of journalists to China at the invitation of the Chinese Government. Mr. Bethel served on the Vestry of St. Mary the Virgin Anglican Churchand Assistant Editor of the Anglican Diocese's newspaper, "The Voice". He was chairman of the Anglican Broadcasting Production Committee. Mr. Bethel served as Assistant General Manager of News for Love 97 FMRadio and The Bahama Journal daily newspaper in Nassau from 1996-2002. For the past 3 1/2 years Mr. Bethel served as News anchor of the 6pm news for the New Providence radio station Star 106.5FM and the Producer of a nightly commentary "My Reporter's Notebook". Mr. Bethel is a Past Master of the Prince Hall Royal Eagle Lodge and a Stalwart Councilor of The governing Progressive Liberal Party. Mr. Bethel is married to the former Dawne Hanna-Adderley, a former broadcaster herself. He is the father of four children and one stepson. ___________________ CM 4723/12 4 EN .
