Lightweight and ultra-portable, the Targus CD-R/RW drive enables you to read, write and rewrite data from your notebook computer. After installing the Targus CD-R/RW drive, you can use it at any time by connecting the supplied Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable into your computer’s USB port and attaching the AC adapter. In addition to this user’s guide, this package contains: • Targus CD-R/RW drive • Targus driver software diskette • Adaptec Easy CD Creator software CD • USB cable • AC adapter System Requirements To use the Targus CD-R/RW drive, your computer must run one of the operating systems and meet the following hardware requirements listed below. Operating System • Windows® 98/Me/2000 5 Hardware • Pentium or equivalent PC, with a hard disk drive • 64 MB RAM or higher, depending on the operating system • USB interface (compliant to USB 1.1) • Standard diskette drive Media Formats The Targus CD-R/RW drive reads formats according to the following CD (compact disc) standards: • MS-DOS® operating system data CDs (High Sierra, Mode 1 and Mode 2 complying with ISO 9660) • CD-ROM XA • Mixed Mode CDs • Kodak Photo CDs (single- and multi-session) • Audio CDs • CD-Digital Audio • CDI, CDI-Ready, CD-Midi, CD-R, CD-RW • Video CDs • CD-TEXT, CD-EXTRA 6 Connecting the Targus External USB CD-R/RW Drive to Your Computer 1 Attach the AC adapter to the AC adapter jack on the back of the Targus CD-R/RW drive. Power button AC adapter jack Targus CD-R/RW drive – back view 2 Plug the AC adapter into a power strip or wall outlet. 3 Turn on the Targus CD-R/RW drive by sliding the power button, on the back of the drive, to the ON position. The indicator light on the drive glows green. 4 Turn on your computer. 7 5 Attach the connector end of the USB cable to the Targus CD-R/RW drive’s USB connector port. Standard USB end Connector end USB Cable 6 Plug the standard USB end of the cable into the USB port on your computer. You can now begin installing the driver software. Installing the Targus CD-R/RW Driver Software NOTE: After installing the driver software, you must install the supplied Adaptec Easy CD Creator software to write and rewrite CDs. To do this, refer to “Writing and Rewriting CDs” on page 13. Windows® Me/2000 Operating Systems To use the Targus CD-R/RW drive with the Windows® Me/2000 operating system, you need to install the default drivers from the operating system. To do this, connect the Targus CD-R/RW drive to your computer and follow the onscreen instructions. After installing the default drivers you are ready to use the drive. 8 Windows® 98 Operating System To use the Targus CD-R/RW drive with the Windows® 98 operating system, you must install two device drivers from the supplied diskette. First you install the USB-to-IDE bridge device driver software. Then, when prompted, you install the driver software for the Targus CD-R/RW drive. 1 Turn on your computer (if it is not already on). The Add New Hardware Wizard appears. Sample Add New Hardware Wizard screen 2 Click Next. 9 The locate driver screen appears. Sample Add New Hardware Wizard locate driver screen 3 Select “Search for the best driver for your device. (Recommended).”, and then click Next. 10 The driver location screen appears. Sample Add New Hardware Wizard specify a location screen 4 Insert the driver diskette in the computer’s diskette drive and click Floppy disk drives so that a check mark appears in the box. The operating system searches for the appropriate device driver. 5 Click Next. 6 Click Finish to complete the USB-to-IDE bridge device driver installation. After installing the USB-to-IDE bridge device driver software, the operating system will detect the Targus CD-R/RW drive. 11 The Add New Hardware Wizard appears. Sample Add New Hardware Wizard screen 7 Click Next. 8 Select “Search for the best driver for your device. (Recommended).”, and then click Next. 9 Click Floppy disk drives so that a check mark appears in the box. The operating system searches for the appropriate device driver. 10 Click Next. 11 Click Finish to complete the driver installation. You are now ready to begin using your Targus CD-R/RW drive. 12 Using the Targus CD-R/RW Drive Inserting and Removing a CD 1 Make sure the Targus CD-R/RW drive is turned on (the indicator light glows green) and press the eject button to open the lid. 2 To insert a CD, hold the disc by the edges, place it in the tray with the printed side up and press down until the disc snaps into place. 3 To remove a CD, grasp the disc by the edges and gently pull up until the disc is released. 4 To close the lid, push it down until it snaps into place. CAUTION: Avoid touching the readable (plain) side of a CD. Touching the readable side of the disc may cause read errors, poor performance or failed operation. To hear the audio, you can either: • Connect headphones or external speakers to the Audio Out jack on the Targus CD-R/RW drive. • Connect an audio cable from the Audio Out jack on the Targus CD-R/RW drive to the Line In jack on your computer. Writing and Rewriting CDs To write and rewrite CDs you must install writing software. For your convenience, the Adaptec Easy CD Creator software is supplied. To install the software, insert the supplied CD into the Targus CD-R/RW drive (or your computer’s internal CD-ROM drive if it has one). If setup does not begin automatically, open Windows® Explorer and double-click the drive icon. Then double-click the setup.exe file to run the installation program. For more information on how to use the Adaptec Easy CD Creator application, refer to the documentation on the CD. Hot Swapping With the Windows® 98/Me/2000 operating systems, you can connect and disconnect the Targus CD-R/RW drive while the computer is running. For more information, refer to “Connecting the Targus External USB CD-R/RW Drive to Your Computer” on page 6. 14 Things to Remember Operating Hints • The Targus CD-R/RW drive operates in either a vertical or horizontal position. To prevent possible damage, avoid changing the drive’s position while it is in use. • Never press the eject button while the drive is working (the indicator light glows orange). • Avoid using or storing the Targus CD-R/RW drive in extreme temperatures. The environmental specifications while operating are 50-113F (10-45 C). • After transporting the Targus CD-R/RW drive, allow it to reach room temperature before using it. CAUTION: Changes in temperature during transport, particularly from a cool to a warmer environment, can cause condensation to form in the drive and may result in operating problems. Allowing the
