  • Governor, State Leaders Launch Ohio Veterans Bonus Program
For Immediate Release: Tuesday, August 24, 2010 Governor, State Leaders Launch Ohio Veterans Bonus Program Columbus, Ohio – Ohio Governor Ted Strickland, Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray, Ohio Treasurer Kevin Boyce and Ohio Department of Veterans Services Director Bill Hartnett today launched the Ohio Veterans Bonus program in Columbus. An estimated 200,000 Ohio residents are eligible for the Ohio Veterans Bonus. “In November, the voters of Ohio resoundingly supported Issue 1,” Strickland said. “Ohioans wanted to extend a small measure of our thanks and offer a tangible sign of our profound respect for our veterans of recent conflicts and their survivors. Today we are asking all eligible veterans and their survivors to apply for this special payment from the state.” “Of course no payment is adequate reward for the sacrifices made on our behalf,” Strickland added. “But these checks will help make a mortgage payment, or put food on the table, or start a savings account. And what’s more, these payments will say something clearly and directly to our veterans: thank you.” All Ohio veterans could be eligible for a bonus if they served on active duty with U.S. armed forces, including the Ohio National Guard, anywhere in the world during specified periods of time. The active duty must be for purposes other than training. Applicants must have been legal residents of Ohio when they went on active duty and also must be Ohio residents when they apply for a bonus. “The process of providing these bonuses began a few years ago in Iraq, when an Ohioan serving as an Army captain there wrote to my office on behalf of the servicemen and women in his unit,” said Cordray.

2017 ANNUAL REPORT T S C of O ANNUAL REPORT 2017 Maureen O’Connor Chief Justice Terrence O’Donnell Sharon L. Kennedy Judith L. French William M. O’Neill Patrick F. Fischer R. Patrick DeWine Justices Michael L. Buenger Administrative Director Stephanie E. Hess Deputy Administrative Director DEAR OHIOANS: NUMBERS CAN TELL A COMPELLING STORY. In the pages of this Supreme Court of Ohio annual report, numbers form the foundation of articles large and small that recap a year of significant decisions from the bench, rule changes for courts, forays into civic education, and accomplishments that reflect the character and diverse work of our staff. The year 2017 began with a welcoming of two new members to the Court. Justices Patrick F. Fischer and R. Patrick DeWine took office following their statewide elections the previous November to full six-year terms. Education at many levels is reflected in the numbers. For the calendar year, nearly 23,000 Ohioans were educated through more than 200 Ohio Judicial College course offerings. As part of our administration of the practice of law in Ohio, the Court registered more than 44,000 active attorneys during 2017’s biennial registration period. Separately, the Court administered the Ohio bar exam twice last year to nearly 1,400 individuals. Staff services were stepped up, and the numbers reflect it. The Court focused on further development and certification of specialized dockets in local courts to meet the changing, and often dire, needs of defendants. We certified court interpreters for non-English-speaking, deaf, and hard-of-hearing individuals who find themselves in court proceedings.

  • The Honorable Eugene Scalia Secretary of Labor U.S. Department of Labor 200 Constitution Ave., N.W
The Honorable Eugene Scalia Secretary of Labor U.S. Department of Labor 200 Constitution Ave., N.W. Washington, DC 20210 Attention: Proxy Voting and Shareholder Rights NPRM. Regarding RIN: 1210-AB91 Dear Secretary Scalia, I am submitting the following comment letter to express my support for the Department of Labor’s recently proposed rule “Fiduciary Duties Regarding Proxy Voting and Shareholder Rights” published in the Federal Register on September 4, 2020. This rule rightly reaffirms the fiduciary obligations that ERISA-backed pension fund managers owe to their beneficiaries and puts forward much needed reforms in a proxy advisory industry that for too long has neglected to serve the best interest of pensioners. As a former Treasurer of the State of Ohio and Mayor of Cincinnati, I have had firsthand experience overseeing a pension system and I take seriously the responsibility of a fund’s management team to provide financial security to the men and women who work hard their entire lives with the hopes to attain a secure retirement. For pension beneficiaries across the country, this proposal by the Department of Labor is a positive step towards ensuring that accountability and fiscal responsibility take precedent over any other considerations. Rightly so, the proposed rule seeks to address the outsized roles that proxy advisory firms have in investment decisions and examine whether their recommendations are always economically beneficial to pensioners. The proxy system has long been taken advantage of by those without fiduciary responsibilities, preventing sound advice from reaching the nation’s pension and investment funds and retail shareholders. There is currently a duopoly in the system, in which two companies, Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) and Glass Lewis, control the overwhelming majority of the proxy advisory market.
