Passoa Advisor Graduate Program in Entomology ABSTRACT The phylogenetics, systematics, taxonomy, and biology of Gelechioidea (Insecta: Lepidoptera) are investigated. This superfamily is probably the second largest in all of Lepidoptera, and it remains one of the least well known. Taxonomy of Gelechioidea has been unstable historically, and definitions vary at the family and subfamily levels. In Chapters Two and Three, I review the taxonomy of Gelechioidea and characters that have been important, with attention to what characters or terms were used by different authors. I revise the coding of characters that are already in the literature, and provide new data as well. Chapter Four provides the first phylogenetic analysis of Gelechioidea to include molecular data. I combine novel DNA sequence data from Cytochrome oxidase I and II with morphological matrices for exemplar species. The results challenge current concepts of Gelechioidea, suggesting that traditional morphological characters that have united taxa may not be homologous structures and are in need of further investigation. Resolution of this problem will require more detailed analysis and more thorough characterization of certain lineages. To begin this task, I conduct in Chapter Five an in- depth study of morphological evolution, host-plant selection, and geographical distribution of a medium-sized genus Depressaria Haworth (Depressariinae), larvae of ii which generally feed on plants in the families Asteraceae and Apiaceae. -

The English version of Part One was issued in 1987 (Amerind Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd, New Delhi-edition supervised by the U.S.D.A. , Washington, D.C.), and it covered the non-ditrysian families (with only a superficial treatment of the Nepticulidae), and eight families among the lower Ditrysia, namely the Psychidae and dll members of the Zygaenoidea, Cossoidea, Sesioidea and Tortricoidea. Beéche C.1 RESUMEN Basado en el estudio de caracteres morfológicos externos y de las estructuras genitales, se describen dos especies nuevas de Alynda Clarke, A. gnathusgrandis nov. sp. y A. aliwensis nov. sp., asociadas a bosque esclerófilo y bosque de Nothofagus Blume del área centro-sur de Chile. Otto Moog 1, Erhard Christian 2*, and Rudolf Eis3 1Institute of Hydrobiology and Aquatic Ecosystem Management, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Gregor Mendel 33 Str., 1180 Vienna, Austria 2 Institute of Zoology, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Gregor Mendel 33 Str., 1180 Vienna, Austria 3Waldegg 9a, 2754 Waldegg, Austria Abstract: Between 2015 and 2019, the list of Lepidoptera from “cave” habitats (i.e., proper caves, rock shelters and artificial subterranean structures) in Austria grew from 17 to 62 species, although the effort of data collection remained nearly constant from the late 1970s onwards. The newly recorded moths and butterflies were resting in caves during daytime in the the warm season, three species were also overwintering there. We observed Catocala elocata at 28 cave inspections, followed by Mormo maura (18), Catocala nupta (7), Peribatodes rhomboidaria, and Euplagia quadripunctaria (6). More than half of the species have been repeatedly observed in caves in Austria or abroad, so their relationship with such sites is apparently not completely random. Since the increase of records in Austria coincided with a considerable rise in the annual number of hot days (maximum temperatures ≥30°C) from 2015 onwards, we interpret the growing inclination of certain Lepidoptera towards daytime sheltering in caves as a behavioral reaction to climate warming.
