60 Minute Practice Plan Practice Schedule for Limited Gym Time Key Strategy: Due to limited practice time, various fundamentals/skills must be combined together within a single drill in order to cover the necessary competitive basketball techniques Time Activity :06 LAYUP DRILL (3 mins *Instead of regular layups where players dribble straight to basket, each set up cones (trash bins, chairs) in a zigzag setting and have players C side) perform a different move (cross over, spin, etc.) at each object as they drive towards the basket for the layup (Think obstacle course but with basketball moves!) :05 FORM SHOOTING * Players must learn at a young age correct shooting form*Split team in half at each basket*Have players stand close to the basket and practice form*One arm behind the back w/o jumping, two hand shooting w/o jumping…perform on left, right, & middle of basket :05 DRIBBLE & DEFEND * Partner-up (1 dribbler/1 defender) * Start on baseline-Dribbler Box Out Drill: Coach starts with ball under works on a different move each time (crossover, behind back, in & basket*3 off players on perimeter/2 defenders out, etc.)*Defender slides feet , cuts dribbler off, turns defender* start on blocks*Coach passes to one of the 3 offensive players*Defenders must sprint , close :15 PICK A DRILL out 2 defenders without the ball*Off player shoots ball & 2 defenders box out 2 off players (Description of drills attached) as they attempt to follow their shot*Shooter MULTI-PURPOSE DRILL**CLOSE & SLIDE DRILL** cannot rebound KRISS-KROSS DRILL **POST REPEAT DRILL**SLIDE LINE BATTLE DRILL :05 DEFENSIVE SHELL DRILL or BOX OUT DRILL :15 Practice Plays *Once your players are familiar with the plays, break your plays down into drills so players practice scoring actually out of your play, like it is designed to do! :10 SCRIMMAGE Announcements Give the players homework! (Example: Require that they dribble for 10 minutes each day) BOX-OUT!! ? 2. Use INCENTIVES! Remember you are teaching kids…Developmentally, they function off of rewards and consequences. Rewards are powerful. (Example: For elementary school teams, create a rewards chart and each day in practice reward players with stickers/marks for working hard, taking charges, talking, etc. When a player reaches a certain goal amount, reward them!) 3. Don’t forget WATER BREAKS! =) HEART Concentration .
