2 Beverley Blarney, Edition 366 – April 2015 www.beverley.wa.gov.au President Report - April 2015

Local Government Elections The next Local Government elections are due to be held in October 2015. If you are registered on the State electoral role with Beverley as your place of residence you will be entitled to vote in the forthcoming Local Government elections for this Shire. A ratepayer with their place of residence elsewhere will need to be registered with the Shire to vote.

Beverley Ward Boundaries Notice was provided to Council that the removal of Ward Boundaries in the Shire of Beverley was advertised in the Government Gazette in February 2015. Electors are now able to vote for all nominees following the removal of Ward Boundaries.

Rubbish along road to Refuse Site An increasing incidence of rubbish falling off vehicles in transit to the Refuse site on Nicholas Rd is disappointing. Please ensure your loads are secured (which is legally required anyway), and if you have an incident and lose some rubbish then be respectful of others and pick it up. Graeme is doing a fantastic job at the refuse site on behalf of the Shire and community and we all need to do our bit too. Beside those going to the rubbish dump this road is also used by locals who live in the vicinity and members and visitors to the Rifle Club, Motorcross and BORMSA. It is becoming one of the busiest roads in the Shire, and yes it is in Council’s 10 year road programme to be improved sooner rather than later!

Town Hall Roof Tenders for replacement of the Town Hall roof came in budget and Council has resolved not to accept any tenders. This project will be reassessed as part of the 15/16 budgetary process.

Beverley Times goes to Trove In recent years the Beverley Times was digitized and accessible from a computer in the Town library. Thanks to the diligence of staff member Gail Moulton work is now underway for the Beverley Times to be available on the National Library database known as “Trove” where it will be available for anyone in the world researching Beverley history. This should be completed by the end of the year.

RV Friendly Status – Your feedback invited Council is seeking feedback from local business and community members regarding a proposal for Beverley to become an “RV Friendly Town”. There is a set of minimum requirements for this to occur including potable water, dump site, town parking, designated short and long term parking, visitor centre, fuel station, medical facilities and shopping.

Tourism Steering Committee A Tourism Steering Committee is being established to investigate tourism as an economic development opportunity for Beverley and possible development of a Tourism Planning Framework. Terms of Reference have been established and the first meeting is scheduled for April. It is anticipated there will be several opportunities for community engagement and feedback during the process.

UWA Student Visit The Shire, CRC and Community recently hosted a “snapshot visit” to Beverley and Avondale for 57 students from UWA’s School of Population Health who are studying Social Service and Social Policy. They had commenced a desktop analysis of Beverley prior to visiting and were interested to learn about various aspects which included agriculture, industry and business, Local Government, CRC, health, education, indigenous, community organisations and other services. Students were encouraged to consider tourism as part of their community profiling. It will be interesting to view Beverley through their eyes when they revisit in May.

Beverley Sunsmart Triathlon Congratulations to everyone involved with the very successful Beverley Sunsmart Triathlon. Samantha Fricker, Gemma Ridgway, Kelly Mann and Brad Miller as the organizing committee oversaw a well prepared and professionally run event which attracted around 135 entrants (and lots of supporters) including locals and visitors. There were many “first timers” and it was a great opportunity for the younger members of the community to participate in something new.

Easter in Beverley Easter in Beverley is a busy time with many familiar and new faces visiting for the various annual activities and events. The flier “What’s on in Beverley at Easter” prepared by the CRC and distributed by Avon Tourism at the Caravan Camping Show usually brings in some fresh faces too. Hope all goes well over the break for everyone.

Proposal to become an RV Friendly Town

The Shire of Beverley is considering submitting an assessment to become recognised as an RV Friendly Town, but would first like to investigate if this is something the community and local business welcome and support.

The RV Friendly Town program is a CMCA program aimed at assisting recreational vehicle consumers as they journey throughout Australia. This includes motorhomes, campervans and caravans. It is expected when they enter a town displaying the RV Friendly Town sign they know they will be welcome with certain services available to them.

To become an RV Friendly Town, certain criteria must be met:

1. Provision of appropriate parking within the town centre with access to a general shopping area with groceries or fresh produce.

2. Provision of low cost, short term RV parking for self contained vehicles as close as possible to the CBD.

3. Access to potable water

4. Access to a free dump point at an appropriate location.

The Shire proposes to allocate Apex Park (corner of Lukin and Vincent Streets) as the short term parking and in town parking for shopping as it is less than a 1km walk.

To learn more about the CMCA an RV Friendly Town’s please visit their website: www.cmca.net.au

Public comment is welcomed, and a feedback form is available from the Shire Office.

Please submit your comments or the feedback form to the Shire of Beverley by Thursday 30 April 2015.

It should be noted that the Shire does not intend to submit an application if there is no support for the program.

The first ever SunSmart Beverley Triathlon was held with great success on Saturday March 21. Beverley saw over 135 competitors from all over the Wheatbelt arrive for the early morning start in perfect weather conditions. Four race categories were available to competitors - Nippers (9 years and under), Juniors (13 years and under), Short (14 years and over) and Long (14 years and over). Our youngest competitor was 6 years old and our eldest was 60 years old - well done to all!

This event showcased the true essence of community spirit with help from over 30 volunteers on the day and equipment assistance from over ten community groups including the St John Ambulance, Football, Golf, Tennis, Swimming, Junior Sports, Station Arts, Agricultural Society, Beverley Photography Club and the Boddington Tri Group. It is a true credit to the Beverley community that so many groups can work together to host such as positive event.

The fun activities continued well after the last competitor had crossed the finish line with a pool party for all ages to enjoy the bouncy castle, music, bumper boats and games. The Beverley Swimming Club made sure all competitors and spectators were well sustained during the day with a sausage sizzle and a fully stocked pool kiosk.

The SunSmart Beverley Triathlon was proudly supported by SunSmart, Healthways, Shire of Beverley, CBH Group, Contract Aquatic Services, Beverley Community Resource Centre, Northam Sportspower and Beverley Country Kitchen.

Beverley CRC Assistant Co-ordinator Sam Fricker said due to the success of this year’s event, plans had already been discussed for a bigger and better Beverley Triathlon in March 2016.

Thankyou to all the sponsors, volunteers and competitors for creating a fantastic day, keep posted for the March 2016 2nd Beverley Triathlon! ‘Like’ Beverley Triathlon on facebook for all the latest event updates, training hints and tips.

LEST WE FORGET They Gave Their Lives at Gallipoli 25 April 1915 – 20 December 1915

After the landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915, an oficial tally was not taken until a week later, so many who actually died at the landing or soon after, have an oficial date of death as 2 May 1915.

Four lads with links to Beverley & District were in that category:

Charles Jonas ‐16th Battalion ‐ Death recorded 2 May 1915 Peter Knight ‐ 16th Battalion ‐ Death recorded 2 May 1915 Arthur Richard Southern ‐ 16th Battalion ‐ Death recorded 2 May 1915 Leslie Pooler Weaver ‐ 11th Battalion ‐ Death recorded 2 May 1915

Mounted troops from the 10th Light Horse in Egypt volunteered to operate as infantry and went to Gallipoli. The August Offensive was the last major attempt made by the Allied forces to break the stalemate that had persisted since the landings on 25 April 1915.

Two men from Beverley & District died in that offensive:

Hubert Howden Brockman ‐ 10th Light Horse – Death recorded 7 August 1915 Dudley Lukin ‐ 10th Light Horse – Death recorded 7 August 1915

Memorabilia, photos & information concerning these men can be found in the Remembering Them Exhibition at the Dead Finish Museum

The largest number of casualties at Gallipoli were suffered by: 11th Battalion, AIF 16th Battalion, AIF 10th Light Horse 28th Battalion, AIF All these units were raised wholly or partly in Western Australia.

Lone Pine Cemetery is the Place of Rest for these six members of our community.

There was a good attendance at the March meeting of the Beverley Branch of CWA on Thursday 12th March. Our new President, Teresa Reid took the chair for the meeting.

We extend sincere sympathy to Ruth Edwards on the passing of her sister, Robyn and to Olwyn Barker on the passing of her father.

Three members attended the Mt Helena/Parkerville CWA for the "Gathering of the Birds" a well run day of friendship and information. Matthew Lunn, well known garden presenter on Radio 100.1 in Perth gave many gardening tips and answered many questions. He also owned 3 beehives and explained the setup of the hives and said that he had recently drained 20 kg of honey from the one hive. It is a very good year for honey production and after tasting the product, we all agreed that it was a delightful sample.

The trading table produced many bargains and the raffle drew many prize winners. We were lucky to bring home two of these beautiful plants to Beverley.

As a branch, we are still working on the celebration of our 90 years as a Branch of CWA. We will have more on this subject at a later date.

On Tuesday 24th March, Branch members have been invited to share Brookton's 70th Anniversary of CWA and as I write, four of us will be attending a luncheon at the Bedford U Beauty Country Hotel in Brookton.

April Stock Clearance As our next meeting is due to be on 25% off all JOIPure Products Thursday 9th April, we will not be

Artist-in-Residence As artist Mandy Evans leaves 26th March, the following day painter Luis Fuentes arrives from Peru! Unfortunately with the green room tucked away on the Station platform behind the stage, Mandy’s work didn’t get the exposure it deserved. As Luis had already booked airfares to come to Australia we didn’t want him to feel a similar isolation so for the month of April BSA is partnering with East End Studio with the intent of Luis working from there. We thank Marlene Willson for offering her space for this purpose and hope that being in the main street many will be tempted to drop in and see him painting. Luis Fuentes was born in Arequipa, Peru in 1969 & studied at the Carlos Baca Flor School in Fine Arts from 1987 - 1991. His work is found in art galleries & private collections in the US, Spain, Mexico, Guatemala, Columbia, Ecuador & Peru. One of the most important elements of Luis's artwork is the contrast between light & shadow. Each painting features rich shadows & bright highlights, to give his work a glowing illusion of reality. It is unsure as to whether Luis will be running a workshop, but we envisage having a wine and cheese gathering towards the end of his stay at East End Gallery so keep an eye on the Bulletin for dates. If anyone is keen to attend a workshop in realism painting register your interest to Artist in Residence Coordinator Marylou Hutchinson on 96471027 / 0427085511 or email: [email protected]

Also, in our endeavor to welcome him to Beverley, if anyone is going for a drive to York or Perth (or surrounding towns) and are happy to take Luis with them so he can see some of our beautiful countryside, please see him at East End Studio or contact Marylou.

Artist Jill Ansell, Marlish Glorie & other writers have postponed their residencies until restoration work is carried out at the Station.

Beverley Station Singers An exciting outcome from last month’s get together was the request for the Station Singers to sing at the wedding of Louise Broun and Chad Atkinson on Saturday 18th April at the Station. Therefore the next rehearsal is scheduled for TUESDAY 7th APRIL at Tracey's House as unsure whether the Greenroom of the Platform Theatre would be occupied by the Artist-in-Residence. Please bring a small plate of food to share for lunch. Newcomers welcome. And then the next ‘gig’ will be singing at the Anzac Day service. STANDUP COMEDY NIGHT Well, there was indeed a steady stream of laughs when these talented comedians hit town! Raining it may have been, but we relocated the event to the intimacy of the RSL Hall where Mike G, Chris Franklin and Janelle Koenig entertained the 65 ticketholders and staff. Yes, only 65 tickets sold which unfortunately meant a loss to BSA of some $2000 so my guess is we won’t be presenting another comedy night (much to the disappointment of the artists as they were enthralled with the crowd on Saturday night of the 14th March. Win some, lose some. Owing to the uncertainty of the weather the usual coffee and food vans are not in attendance but we had yummy hot beef or chicken rolls for sale prepared by our local Country Kitchen and the BSA committee. So our thanks to Wayno and our fabulous committee. With such a last minute decision as to what venue we would be at it was all hands on deck from 5pm to set up – a huge effort. Thanks also to Simon and his team at the bar. To committee member Penny Burns I thank, for firstly knowing who to make contact with, and then much communication with John McAllister of Comedy Lounge to make it all happen. And whilst thanking people, I must make special mention of Steve Ramm and Tim Kilpatrick for the light and sound production. Without them, there would be no quality to our shows.

Dear Reader

Today we are looking at our health and what good health means. The word health means different things to different people obviously. The English word ‘health’ comes from the Old English word ‘hale’, meaning “wholeness, being whole, sound or well,” Hale comes from the Proto-Indo-European root ‘kailo’, meaning “whole, uninjured, of good omen”. The word ‘Kailo’ comes from the Proto-Germanic root ‘khalbas’, meaning “something divided”. Now I can hear you say “goodness me, what a complicated thing health must be if an explanation of one word is this long”. And this is exactly what it is. A complicated process in our body, which is what health, is. One can not buy it, or borrow it; it is not a thing which happens overnight. It is really a condition which needs to be nurtured, feed and taken care of. Thinking “I will be alright, everything will fall into place and I don’t need to worry about it” won’t do any good.

Have you looked in your mirror lately? Perhaps you don’t like what you see. Do you think you could look a little bit better? Are you confused with all the tips and information which is available through the media and do you think it is too difficult to change and it would be easier just to do the same you have always done? Let me tell you one thing, if you have this kind of thoughts it is actually a good sign. It shows that deep within you there is very fertile ground for changes. Changes are never easy, especially if it concerns the daily life cycle. To stay healthy is actually a constant work in progress. Your body is made up of about 37 trillion cells and all these cells need daily feeding and watering. These cells are the building blocks of life, so taking care of them and keeping them happy must be your main priority. It is a constant fight to keep all the nasty influences which surround us away from the cells. They need food, light and water. It is like your compost heap, if you put too much rubbish in the compost, if you don’t turn it over to get oxygen in or let it go too dry, your compost will get a very unpleasant smell. If you don’t give your body the nourishment it needs, you will see the result in your face or skin, you will lack energy, you might put on kilos where you don’t want them, and your digestion will not work properly with other words you probably feel simply ‘rotten’. Did you know that an experienced observer in Natural Therapies can actually smell the anorexic fumes a body gives off, which in blunt words means, if your digestion is not working properly and your bowls are not regularly emptied, the pores of your skin can release a very nasty smell and an Iridologist can see in your Iris the poison sitting deep in your bowls. It shows a range of colour which indicates this. These colours appear mainly in red/orange. It means ‘watch out, danger’ and it is not too late to cleanse your body. Now to problem is how to do a cleansing and this is the topic for this month.

How to start a cleansing If you start a cleansing cycle the most important thing is to keep it simple and start slowly. Make it a daily routine to start your day with a warm glass of water, the juice of one lemon, a small piece of ginger skin removed and finely grated. In winter this drink can be made with hot water to warm your body in the morning. Drink this before you eat or drink anything else. The motivation for cleansing should be no other reasons than to love your body and give your system a good start for the day ahead and also an excellent start for the new you! Being healthy and energetic, feeling great, having a clear head for the task you are supposed to do. It is so great to wake up in the morning and look forward to it.

This is really not very complicated. The lemon water flushes out toxins and is extremely beneficial for the body. If you prefer, use 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar but make sure you buy vinegar with the ‘mother’ in it and try to get hold of Melrose or Lotus Certified Organic Apple cider Vinegar. This morning drink is the perfect ‘good morning drink’, as it aids the digestive system and makes the process of eliminating the waste products easier. It also prevents the problem of constipation and diarrhoea by ensuring smooth bowel functions. Lemon is an excellent and rich source of vitamin C, an essential nutrient that protects the body against immune system deficiencies. The pectin fibre is very good for colon health and is antibacterial; it balances the pH levels in the body and helps flushing out toxins. The list is huge and goes on. It encourages the production of bile, a great source of citric acid, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. It prevents infections and diseases helps reducing pain and inflammation, helps cure the common cold, the potassium in lemon helps nourish brain and nerve cells, it strengthens the liver. I think you get my drift,’ lemon the super food’. Start this morning routine, keep at it and don’t skip it. Once you have got used to this routine you can continue with a juice cleanse. This will be covered in my next article.

We gathered in beautiful surroundings on Terry and Glenda’s back verandah and enjoyed catching up after the protracted break for the summer. Twenty three members attended and we were a little late starting our meeting because we were so pleased to see each other! Our first meeting is always about setting our programme for the year and we have many varied and interesting places to go and things to see. Members will be advised when the dates are firmed up and bus availability sorted. www.beverley.wa.gov.au Beverley Blarney, Edition 366 – April 2015 35 Working with Warriors Understanding Stress

Stress is usually associated with not being in control of a particular situation or an environment leading us to feel uncomfortable in body and/or mind. It is a part of life and it affects everyone at one time or another. Stress is normal, a certain amount of stress energizes people consequently improving performance and efficiency.

It’s when stress builds too high that problems can develop and will start to take its toll on our mental health, physical health and social/spiritual wellbeing sometimes with dire consequences. At RMHI we refer to “situational distress” to explain those times in our lives that creates extreme stress (distress) which can start from situations that are unresolved in our lives. If you are always saying things like “I haven’t got enough time”, “I must get this done before…..”, “I’ll never finish in time”, “I can’t get anything done“; you are a chance to move from “stressed” to being “distressed”.

It is important to remember that what might be stressful for some may not be stressful for others. We all deal with things differently.

How do you currently cope with stress? Are your coping strategies healthy or unhealthy, helpful or unproductive? Many people cope with stress in ways that compound the problem. Below are unhealthy strategies that may temporarily reduce stress but will cause more damage in the long run:  Sleeping too much  Filling up every minute of the day to avoid facing problems  Withdrawing from friends, family and activities  Taking out your stress on others (lashing out, anger outbursts, physical violence)  Drinking too much  Procrastinating  Overeating or undereating  Smoking  Using pills/drugs to relax  Zoning out for hours in front of television or the computer

Here are some tips that may help deal with stressful situations.  AVOID the stressor. Learn to say “no”, limit time with those who stress you out (if possible), control your environment ie. turn the news off if it makes you anxious, give the bookwork to the bookkeeper.  ALTER the stressor. Communicate your concerns ie. “Talk to a Mate”, ask for a behaviour change but be willing to also compromise, be more assertive, manage your time better.  ADAPT to the stressor. If you can’t change the stressor, change yourself, look at the stressful situation more positively, will it matter in the long run? If the answer is “no” refocus elsewhere, set reasonable standards not perfectionism, look at all the good things in your life if feeling stressed out.  ACCEPT the stressor. Some stressors are unavoidable, in such cases accept things as they are. This can be difficult but easier than railing against an unchangeable situation.

Finding and creating ways to relax when you are stressed out will also help ie. exercise, get a massage, listen to music to calm down and/or … before it all gets too much … Talk to a Mate!! Most importantly if you feel you are not coping, despite your efforts to do so, we recommend to see your GP before you reach a crisis point.

17 March 2015 Call for landholder input into priority weed targets Landholders can take part in selecting five priority weed targets for a new surveillance program across the South West Land Division. The Department of Agriculture and Food is calling for producer and community input into its agricultural weed surveillance project, which will focus on 20 high priority declared weeds. Department Biosecurity and Regulation Director Deb Cousins said the project relied on industry and community input to develop a program which delivered maximum control and eradication of weeds posing a threat to agricultural production. “Controlling weeds costs the WA agriculture industry an estimated $341 million each year,” Dr Cousins said. Fifteen weed species have been confirmed as surveillance targets and an additional five will be determined by industry and the community. “The department has selected 27 high priority species,” Dr Cousins said. “From this list, landholders and community members can nominate the weeds they consider of highest priority. This feedback will be collated to select the five priority weed targets.” The project is part of the $20 million Boosting Biosecurity Defences program, a component of the Seizing the Opportunity Agriculture initiative made possible by the Royalties for Regions program. Project leader Tamrika Lanoiselet said to be eligible as a high priority surveillance target, the weed must be a declared pest under the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007 (BAM Act). “They must also have an adverse impact on agricultural production, be identifiable by the general public and easily survive in South West conditions,” Dr Lanoiselet said. “Some well-known examples include silverleaf nightshade, apple of Sodom, blackberry, water hyacinth, golden dodder, arum lily, doublegee and variegated thistle. “The full list of 27 species and instructions on how to nominate weeds is available at the department website agric.wa.gov.au by searching for ‘weed surveillance target’. The closing date for input is 10 April.” The department reminds individuals and biosecurity groups who wish to be involved in the weed surveillance project to register their interest or find out more about the program at department website by searching for weed surveillance.

As the pre-season draws to a close, our focus at training shifts more towards improving skill efficiency and working on game play situations. The Match Committee are happy with the effort the players have been putting in, however, as always, would like to see greater numbers on the track each week.

We held a 14 per side intra-club scratch match on the 21st March, with special guest Glen Jakovich coaching one of the sides. It was a rewarding experience for our players, as Jako passed on his knowledge of the game with the group and our players undoubtedly would have gained a greater insight about what's required to play to your full potential. Jako then conducted a junior clinic and shared stories of his playing days with our supporters later that evening.

The Beverley Football Club extends our deepest sympathy to Michael Day, and family, on the passing of Michael's Mother, Karen, and to Trevor, Amanda and Matthew McLean, and family, on the passing of Amanda's Father, Raymond Jeffes.

Saturday 28 February 2015 saw Beverley take on Quairading in the 1st Semi Final of the Avon Cricket Association. The game was played in Beverley in ideal conditions. Beverley unfortunately only had 10 players available for the game that could bat but were able to field 11 thanks to Justin Mann playing as a sub.

Beverley won the toss and elected to bat. Beverley was in all sorts of trouble at one stage being 5 for 22. A great partnership between David Kennedy and Bob Ugle of 44 took Beverley to 66 until David was caught for 26, this then saw Beverley lose their remaining for 3 runs to be All Out for 69.

Beverley needed to make early inroads into Quairading’s batting. Dale Wansbrough and Beau McLean bowled very well to have Quairading 7 for 22, however a 41 run partnership between Rohan Hadlow and Shaun Simpson took Quairading’s score to 63, but Beverley struck back to remove both these players on 63 which saw Quairading edge pass Beverley’s score 9 down to win by 1 . Dale Wansbrough was the stand out bowler taking 5 for 17 off 10 overs.

Beverley All Out for 69 defeated by Quairading 9 for 70

Beverley Batting: David Kennedy 26, Bob Ugle 21, Dale Wansbrough 12 Quairading Bowling: Craig Anderson 4 for 4, Jack Richards 3 for 25, Brayden Hayes 2 for 28 Quairading Batting: Rohan Hadlow 23, Shaun Simpson 15 Beverley Bowling: Dale Wansbrough 5 for 17, Beau McLean 2 for 37, David Kennedy 1 for 6, Tom Fleay 1 for 9

Beverley was to host the Grand Final between York and Tammin on Saturday 14 March, but unfortunately wet weather intervened and the match was rescheduled to the following weekend. The game had to be played in Kellerberrin due to the Beverley oval being unavailable. York won the Grand Final easily by 130 runs.

After the summer break, it was back into Pennants and Championship games commencing with the IGA Championship Fours being played on the 1st of February and our thanks go to the Pepper Family for their sponsorship. The winners were Peter Fleay, Greg Barrett-Lennard, Chris Pepper and Geoff Bremner. Runners-up were Rodney Ware, Daniel Fleay, Brad Copping and Sheldon Petchell.

On the weekend of the 7th and 8th of February Peter Fleay represented Beverley at the Inter Zone Fours event held at Albany and Glenys Collins and Marg Peck played in the Inter League Pairs event held at Merredin.

On Friday the 13th the Boekeman Machinery Day was held with Bill Boekeman, Colin Riggs, Peter Oliver and Glen Plaisted’s team representing Boekemans. Our many thanks again go to Boekeman’s for sponsoring this event, and to Daran Thomson who is now the Representative for the Beverley area for coming along to make the presentation of trophies. The winning team was made up of Brad Copping, Jeff Murray, Paul Brereton and Mick Martin with 4 wins plus 27 shots up, with the team of David Bell, Mike Carthew, Fred Bremner and Paul Burns the runners-up with 4 wins plus 12 shots up. The AM round went to Peter Fleay, Lew Shaw, Bruce Mann and Ben Murray, while the PM round was won by Don Minchin, Steve Minchin, Jarrod Minchin and Arron Smith. The Men’s Pairs and Singles Championships are in progress, and the finals will be played (weather willing) on Sunday the 14th. The Men’s Singles Champion for 2014/15 is Daniel Fleay winning from Rodney Ware 25 – 23. The Plate was won by Sheldon Petchell from Geoff Bremner. The Pairs Champions were David Bell and Kim Moulton with Peter Fleay and Geoff Bremner the runners-up. The Plate was won by Brad Copping and Mark Armstrong from Rodney Ware and Neil Moulton.

On the 3rd of March 4 ladies travelled to Dowerin to play in the Avon Valley League Singles with Marg Peck getting to the semi finals in the Major, but the glory for Beverley goes to our new player Verna McKelvie - Wilson for winning the Novice section of the Championships The Ladies Pennants were finalized on the 10th of March with 2 rounds played at York. The winning team for this season is Goomalling (their first win in 10 years) with 56 points from York Blue with 53.5 point. The Beverley Ladies finished 5th from 10 teams – well done ladies.

In the Men’s Pennants the 2nd division team ended the season in 5th place on a technicality, but the 1st division team known as Beverley Blue finished the season in 3rd place before the finals. On Saturday the 21st of March the finals were commenced with the play-offs for Division 1 played at York as they had finished top of the ladder. York (top) played Toodyay (second) with Toodyay winning this game to go through to the Grand Final. Beverley (third) played Dowerin (fourth) and Beverley won this match by 6-7 shots. On Sunday morning, the Beverley Team consisting of ;- 1. Greg Barrett-Lennard (Skip), Brad Copping, Don Minchin and David Overington 2. David Bell (Sk), Louis Irvine. Brett Hutchinson and Geoff Rayner; 3. Peter Fleay (Sk), Rodney Ware, Royce Edwards and David Fleay; 4. Daniel Fleay (Sk), Sheldon Petchell, Lew Shaw and Geoff Bremner, again travelled to York to play York in the Semi-Final. This was again a very closely contested event, coming down to the 25th end to decide the winners with Beverley again winning this challenge by a few shots. After a much needed lunch the Beverley Team then joined Toodyay on the green to contest for the Pennant Final. This was a very interesting match with the teams scores see-sawing throughout the day. Toodyay seemed to be getting the upper hand with a few ends to play, but the Beverley boys rose to the challenge to finally win by the narrowest of margins. This was a fantastic game to watch for the spectators who came to support their clubs. WELL DONE BEVERLEY BLUE !!!!!!

The club will be having social events for the players during the season, stay tuned for further details.

The next committee meeting will be on Tuesday 14 April at the Hotel Beverley commencing at 7.15pm.

On a final note the courts!! If you see people on the courts on scooters, with dogs, on bikes etc. please encourage them to use other areas in the community. There is plenty of signage on the fencing as you enter the area prohibiting scooters and bikes and now we have marks on the courts. A lot of people took a lot of time and effort fundraising for this area so the courts could be used for Netball and Basketball for many years to come.

We now have some very happy horses and ponies with their newly fied saddles!

On the 22nd of March we held our annual Show Jumping and Dressage Training Day which was a huge success. With two dressage rings on the oval and show jumping on our grounds the day ran very smoothly, with only a few hiccups to fix before next years event.
