David Campbell hosts Weekend Afternoons on smoothfm David Campbell can be heard on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, from 1pm to 4pm, on smoothfm. David has featured on TV, starred in theatre and cabaret and is also a multi- platinum selling recording artist, having recorded three Top Ten albums, and performed sold out concert tours from coast to coast. He currently co- hosts Channel Nine’s ‘Today Extra’ alongside Sylvia Jeffreys. David was performing at the STC and Sydney Opera House by the age of 22 and in 1997 starred in a major revival of Les Miserables in Sydney. Shortly after, He moved to New York, and he became the youngest performer ever to headline the iconic cabaret room Rainbow & Stars. David was soon in demand from Broadway’s most prestigious writers and directors. Stephen Sondheim cast him in his musical Saturday Night, and he played leading roles in shows like Babes in Arms and South Pacific. In 2001 he returned to Australia for the role of Johnny O'Keefe in the musical Shout! and toured Australia with the show for over a year. David went on to star in Australian productions of classic musicals including Pirates of Penzance and Sunset Boulevard, which won him a Helpmann Award in 2005 for Best Actor. In 2016, he performed to sold out crowds as the lead in the stage show Dream Lover – The Bobby Darin Musical in Sydney, and in 2017-18, he helmed the show for the return of the Summer Musical at Melbourne’s State Theatre, making history as the highest selling show of all time at the Arts Centre. David has established himself as one of Australia’s biggest-selling recording artists. His albums The Swing Sessions (2006), The Swing Sessions 2 (2007), and Good Lovin’ (2008) On Broadway (2010) all hit the top ten and achieved platinum sales. He has also mounted five sell-out concert tours - for which he has received a further two Helpmann Awards. In 2009, his live concert DVD Good Lovin’ Live hit number one on the ARIA chart. In October 2018, he celebrated the release of his debut Christmas album Baby It’s Christmas featuring 12 eclectic and memorable Christmas classics, making it his 11th studio album. Campbell’s position in the Australian entertainment industry has expanded with his appointment as Artistic Director of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, becoming a founding member of the Independent Music Theatre, and establishing Luckiest Productions, the production company he runs with his wife Lisa. Outside music and theatre, David is a proud ambassador for the Charlie Teo Foundation and Backpacks 4 SA Kids. David is father to Leo and twins Billy and Betty.
