The pools are required to be closed for General Manager a minimum four hours when this happens to allow for super-chlorination of the water, so, please do take care to ensure that children are properly clothed when using the pools and surrounding areas. I can advise that from mid-June onwards the Main Pitch in the Infield will be closed as the carpet (and infill) and shock pad layer are to be replaced. Unfortunately, as a result of a number of defects, that have occurred as regards the installation of the shock pad layer, we are having to replace the whole system. Installation, good weather permitting, should take no more than 6 weeks. At the same time (from mid-June onwards) we are intending to install a new Sports Hall flooring system. The existing system has been down since the “new” club opened some 17 years ago and it is therefore felt that we are due for a new one! The installation of the new system for the Sports Hall will take a while longer than the Main Pitch with opening meant to be around the end of August. Please note too, that as a result of a change in the Hong Kong law that vehicles parked within the Club Premises must have engines turned off. As such, an addition to the Car Parking Bye-laws has been made and this can be viewed by going to the Club website at www.hkfc.com.hk and then clicking on the Membership icon and then going to Members’

A quick fire goal from Paul Jarrett at the beginning of the 2nd half seemed to take the wind out of USRC’s sails and a strong second half performance meant we saw the game fairly comfortably to win the cup 2-0 for the 2nd year on the trot. A great moment for all involved and especially for skipper Danny Beattie to lift the cup again after a season hampered with injury. Party times ensued back at the Club where both the Soccer Section’s Chairman, Neil Jensen, and Captain, Scott Semple, very generously provided hospitality. A big thank you to all the boys for their commitment and fun they have brought this season but special mentions to Craney, Danny Beattie, Terry A low point in March saw Albion get some revenge for the cup mauling with a Harris and Mark Healy for all their deserved 3-1 victory in the league for which I blame Craney for no other reason support this season. than I can (Ed. please note this does not go on my record as was in another continent when this defeat took place - Bavo). The highlight was a closely fought semi-final win against Mobsters with Neil (Shonners) Shonard slotting home the winning pen in the penalty shoot-out, which meant another cup final beckoned! We also welcomed our Coach Guru Mark (Glasgow) Healy, ladened with his UEFA badges, and his coaching “expertise” helped us play some of our best soccer of the season...and our worst!! A 2-0 half-time lead against USRC which could have easily been 3 or 4 saw our Guru say “whatever you do make sure you keep it tight for the first 15 minutes”. Needless to say we were 3-2 down after 12 minutes of the second half. Cheers Guru!! The game ended 3-3 with Nick Mawdsley (yes Nick!) rising off the bench to nod home in the 81st minute. Unfortunately the record book state it was Mark Hulbert’s goal, but hopefully Nick can show his Dad this article and his Dad will believe him now. Another high scoring 3-2 win against 816, which was probably our best performance of the season, also saw our goal of the season from Paul “Puddles” Jarrett. For those of you whom he hasn’t told, he picked up the ball, skipped past a challenge and unleashed a 30 yd left foot screamer into the top corner, well done Puddles!! It really wasn’t too dissimilar to my goal at Celtic Park which you can see on YouTube under Football Aid Goal of the Season 2010 or by typing this link http://www. youtube.com/watch?v=abVzi8KVIMQ Winning coaches – Mark Bavis and Steven Crane The last league game saw us take on YYL Champions KCC Dragons and for 70 minutes we were in control of the game and leading 1-0, but a poor referee decision to award a penalty and a soft second goal cruelly robbed us of a deserved victory which would’ve seen us finish 3rd in the league but alas we had to settle for 4th. On to the cup!! USRC were to provide the opposition for the final, a team who has provided us with difficult games the last few seasons. Wanderers found it tough to settle down on the ball in the first 20 minutes but with the vocal support of the old Wanderers and the wags the team settled down and got a goal late in the first half through a well placed strike by Pipes and saw out the first half 1-0.

The Man in the Stand John Charleston Roy Hodgson

Looking through some old relic magazines I happened to stumble across a quite magnificent photograph taken at a national football coaching course in Johannesburg, South Africa from 1976. According to the associated article, it was the “most advanced in South African Football” which you may scoff at, but it did produce varying degrees of success! The keen eyed amongst you will spot two very well known faces whose football paths took them down quite differing paths...... one of course is Roy Hodgson whose career has led him to what some determine as the pinnacle of coaching; the England National Team Manager. Others also know it as a poison chalice! Roy follows in the footsteps of such greats as Sir Alf Ramsay and Bobby Robson. The other face in the crowd is that of our very own John “JC” Charleston whose own globetrotting football exploits, as legend has it, include; forcing his wife, Margaret, to arrange their wedding in Dundee on a Sunday to accommodate his Saturday game of football; establishing teams in Saudi Arabia and China, before being expelled from both countries for political agitation; having legendary Sir Stanley Mathews in his back pocket in South Africa (Mathews was 69 at the time); and, in the 1980s, helping Ian McNaughton set up the very first Mini / Junior Soccer programme at the HKFC, from whence he was subsequently banned on three separate occasions before “selling his soul for a mess of potage” to work in the capitalist private sector of Hong Kong.

Felix Kwok (Y8) and Christopher Chung (Y9) represented Hong Kong in the recently completed U14 AFC Festival of Football held in Beijing, China. Playing under two modified formats Hong Kong produced their best ever result at an AFC Festival of Football tournament, winning 6, drawing 1 and losing 2. The team scored 19 goals and conceded only 5. Along the way the team defeated China 1-0 and DPR Korea 4-0. While no points were counted, statistically the Hong Kong team were the third best team in the tournament, behind traditional powerhouses South Korea and Japan. Both boys played well, especially Felix who was a late addition into the squad. Not only was he one of the youngest players in Felix Kwok (Y8) and Christopher Chung (Y9) the squad, but was also given the responsibility of playing in the important holding midfield role. In addition to playing games against other East Asia nations, all the boys undertook the AFC skills test, with Christopher topping the overall Hong Kong team list; scoring team high results for running with the ball speed, dribbling speed, juggling, short pass accuracy, and crossing accuracy. Their success at the Festival was in no small part, testament to the HKFC Soccer Section’s junior soccer programme, with both boys having been involved since their childhood. The Festival also saw Club first team striker Amro Abbas selected by the HKFA to participate in the AFC “C” coaching course. The Festival’s AFC “C” coaching course is an accelerated programme, Christopher Chung in action affording talented young coaches, who are either currently or who have just recently finished playing at a high standard, an opportunity to develop a career in football coaching. Congratulations to all three for their participation in the AFC Festival of Football. By Francis Chung

Long Live Lara McKee

It’s a very respectable feat to lead your team to an unbeaten season, but to do it in two consecutive years is really something! League Update

The evening summer league has just kicked off. The ladies B team is off to a perfect start with two wins, 9-0 against KTC and 7-2 against Kornhill. Simon’s A+ team won their first match 6-3 but went down in their second 3-6 against KCC. Duncan’s D team got off to a winning start with a 7-2 win against Recreio. Meanwhile Clint’s B team got off to a slow start losing their first match 3-6 to IRC in blustery conditions. But the team won a nail-biting match against American Club 5-4 on 8th May in dramatic fashion. Greg and Nick won their first set 6-4 but Greg injured his wrist in the process, meaning that Nick had to do most of the heavy lifting going for winners and poaching at the net, while Greg just lobbed the ball back into play. The strategy didn’t work for their second set, which they lost 3-6 but they got it together for the final set with a comfortable 6-2 win. James and Gus playing together for the first time won their first set 7-6, but couldn’t maintain the momentum losing the next two sets winning 4-6 and 3-6. Captain Clint and Eric D haven’t quite regained the stellar form they had last year, losing their first set 5-7 but making amends with a 6-4 win in the second. So with the match poised at 4-4 it all came down to their final set. After slipping to 1-4 they pulled it back to 5-5 and managed a crucial break, which gave Clint the opportunity to serve for the match at 6-5 up. Despite facing a couple of break points himself, he played a superb captain’s innings to secure the victory 5-4.

Bank of China (HK) 55th Festival of Sport – Age Group Triathlon 6th May 2012 at Plover Cove (1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run)

The 6th May saw the start of the triathlon racing season and the event drew over 600 participants, a clear demonstration of the increasing growth and popularity of the sport. The Club had a good turnout and came away with an amazing 5 podium places. The days before had seen torrential rain and rainstorm warnings. However, the weather on the day provided perfect racing conditions. Despite some late call offs, the David Howell, Richard Hall Club was well represented. The excuses ranged from injury through to the Lady Gaga and Paul Dingley concert the night before. The most valid excuse was from David Watts who suffered from concussion playing football on the Friday night before the event. When he asked the Adventist hospital if he could do the triathlon, he was understandably immediately admitted overnight! HKFC swim coach, Lloyd McBean, had the members playing water polo in the week leading up to the event. Presumably this was in anticipation of a rough start to the swim leg. However the 600 participants set off in two waves and in a fairly calm manner. The water was a nice temperature and fairly clean. Fortunately Vice Captain, Ashley and Cordelia Dyer Guy Horne, had spotted Mike Sadler’s slight error, of putting on his tri suit the wrong way round, just before the start! Plover Cove provides a challenging course of a two-lap sea swim, a four-lap fairly hilly bike course and then a two-lap reservoir run. The lap format means that there is plenty of opportunity to encourage and compete against your mates and rivals. Richard Hall, Laura Walsh, Cat Sen, Caitrin Adorian and Cordelia Dyer all put in great performances to reach the podium and pick up awards. Mike Sadler, Phil Shirley and Guy Horne

40 Jun 2012 Ten Pin Bowling New Books and DVDS in the Library

NEW DVDS

It’s been an exciting month for the BIG. We’ve recently held our own internal tournament. Congratulations to Tracy Tam for winning the Handicap Singles, Emy Clarke for winning the Scratch Singles, and Anto Grabo and Emy Clarke for winning the team competition. We are at the 3rd place in the HKICTB league, behind rivals KCC and KTC. We hope that we can secure a 2nd place ranking at the end of the 2011-2012 league in June!

Coach Catherine’s tips: Footwork and timing The most popular footwork format is the “four-step TOP DVD RENTALS pattern”. As suggested, the bowler walks four steps before SPEED ANGELS bowling the ball. Whichever hand you bowl with, you start the steps with the opposite foot. The length and A PASSIONATE WOMAN time between each step, should be the same. On your HAYWIRE 1st step, you should be bringing the ball forward at the same time as your step. Then, as you enter the 2nd step, W.E. you relax your arm and let the ball swing backwards and JOYFUL NOISE down during the 2nd and 3rd steps (let momentum do UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING its job!). On the 4th step, you release the ball just as your foot approaches the foul line.
