Tropical Malady: Film & the Question of the Uncanny Human-Animal
etropic 10(2011): Creed, Tropical Malady | 131 Tropical Malady: Film & the Question of the Uncanny Human-Animal “The tiger trails you like a shadow/ his spirit is starving and lonesome/I see you are his prey and his companion” – Tropical Malady. Barbara Creed University of Melbourne Abstract The acclaimed Thai film, Tropical Malady (2004), represents the tropics as a surreal place where conscious and unconscious are as inextricably entwined. Directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Tropical Malady presents two interconnected stories: one a quirky gay love story; the other a strange disconnected narrative about a shape-shifting shaman, a man-beast and a ghostly tiger. This paper will argue that from it beginnings in the silent period, the cinema has created an uncanny zone of tropicality where human and animal merge. rom its beginnings in the early twentieth century the cinema has expressed an F enduring fascination with the tropics as an imaginary space. While many filmmakers have envisaged the tropics as an unspoiled paradise (Bird of Paradise, 1932, 1951; The Moon of Manakoora, 1943; South Pacific, 1958), a view which has its origins in classical times, others have represented the tropics as a deeply uncanny zone where familiar and unfamiliar coalesce. It is as if the heat and intensity of the tropics has liquefied matter until normally incommensurate forms are able to dissolve almost imperceptibly into each other. In this process the boundaries between different systems of thought, ideas and ethics similarly dissipate, creating a space for new and often subversive ideas to flourish. As Driver and Martins state, the meaning of “tropicality” is so elastic a number of discourses have been able to shape it to suit their own purposes. -

Obviously, these items would be a good gift idea for any occasion year-round, as well as a gift for yourself! We do not include many, if any at all, single CDs in the guide. Most everything contained will be multiple CD sets, DVDs, CD/DVD sets, books and the like. Of course, you can always look though our back issues to see what came out in 2017 (and prior years), but none of us would want to attempt to decide which CDs would be a fitting ad- dition to this guide. As with 2016, the year 2017 was a bit on the lean side as far as reviews go of box sets, books and DVDs - it appears tht the days of mass quantities of boxed sets are over - but we do have some to check out. These are in no particular order in terms of importance or release dates. -

Capps, NAPA Start Celebration for 50 Years of Funny Cars with Win at Winternationals, Start Mello Yello Season on Fox
Ron Capps celebrates his Winternationals victory with his NAPA team and family: from left, dad John, wife Shelley, son Caden and mom Betty. Capps, NAPA start celebration for 50 years of Funny Cars with win at Winternationals, start Mello Yello season on Fox Last Sunday was Valentine’s Day but the season-opening NHRA Circle K Winternationals in Pomona, Calif., didn’t show much love to Don Schumacher Racing. That is, unless you are Ron Capps and the NAPA AUTO PARTS team led by crew chief Rahn Tobler and assistant Eric Lane who opened the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season by winning the Funny Car title to begin a special year that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Funny Car. Their 2016 Dodge Charger R/T was the only one of seven DSR entries to advance past the second round of Mello Yello eliminations and they went all the way. Capps and the NAPA team were dominant all weekend during the first of 24 national events with seven of their eight runs in the 3- second range including all four in qualifying that helped the team earn the No. 2 spot. “I have the best team in the business, and they gave me a great racecar,” he said. “All four runs in the 3s in qualifying, I don’t think anyone else did that. I knew we had a good racecar. Tobler and I have grown so much together. It’s like a marriage. He really keeps me in line on race day. We had a heckuva day.” And it was a banner weekend for NAPA Racing. -

Beyond the Films Themselves Hollywood Is Not Just Fancy Dresses and Gossip: Vermeer Rarity Exists in the Artwork
BEYOND THE FILMS THEMSELVES HOLLYWOOD IS NOT JUST FANCY DRESSES AND GOSSIP: Vermeer Rarity Exists in the Artwork by Dwight Cleveland Movies are arguably the most influential art form of the 20th Century. Everyone loves the movies the world over. U.S. film companies have averaged $1.25 billion in global receipts each year for over 15 years. In terms of intellectual consumption it has been one of the U.S.’s largest exports every year since the early 1930’s. One can now view current films on hand-held devices like iPads and mobile phones, at home On Demand or with a purchased or rented DVD, or old-school style “at a local theatre near you.” The options are ubiquitous by necessity. Movies have given us words to live by, iconic phrases that are universal: “Make my day.” “You look’n at me?” “I’ll be back!” “You can’t handle the truth.” “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.” Where on earth would one have to go to find someone who didn’t understand these words? The movies are a way of life and an influence on everyone, everywhere. So if the movies are such an integral part of our cultural fabric, why do the posters advertising those films mean so little to most people, especially industry insiders? Back in the day, film posters started out as the only advertising agent for a newly released movie. During the early years, the entire ad budget went into the artwork, design and printing of the posters. From the teens through the 1930’s, they were beautiful stone lithographs with sophisticated graphics and fully saturated color schemes. -
