    Assessing conservation status of resident and migrant birds on Hispaniola with mist-netting John D. Lloyd, Christopher C. Rimmer and Kent P. McFarland Vermont Center for Ecostudies, Norwich, VT, United States ABSTRACT We analyzed temporal trends in mist-net capture rates of resident (n D 8) and overwintering Nearctic-Neotropical migrant (n D 3) bird species at two sites in montane broadleaf forest of the Sierra de Bahoruco, Dominican Republic, with the goal of providing quantitative information on population trends that could inform conservation assessments. We conducted sampling at least once annually during the winter months of January–March from 1997 to 2010. We found evidence of declines in capture rates for three resident species, including one species endemic to Hispaniola. Capture rate of Rufous-throated Solitaire (Myadestes genibarbis) declined by 3.9% per year (95% CL D 0%, 7.3%), Green-tailed Ground-Tanager (Microligea palustris) by 6.8% (95% CL D 3.9%, 8.8%), and Greater Antillean Bullfinch (Loxigilla violacea) by 4.9% (95% CL D 0.9%, 9.2%). Two rare and threatened endemics, Hispaniolan Highland-Tanager (Xenoligea montana) and Western Chat-Tanager (Calyptophilus tertius), showed statistically significant declines, but we have low confidence in these findings because trends were driven by exceptionally high capture rates in 1997 and varied between sites. Analyses that excluded data from 1997 revealed no trend in capture rate over the course of the study. We found no evidence of temporal trends in capture rates for any other residents or Nearctic-Neotropical migrants. This gorgeous male Swinhoe's Pheasant was one of the birds of the trip! We found a pair of these lovely endemic pheasants at Dasyueshan. Photo by guide Phil Gregory. This was a first run for the newly reactivated Taiwan tour (which we last ran in 2006), with a new local organizer who proved very good and enthusiastic, and knew the best local sites to visit. The weather was remarkably kind to us and we had no significant daytime rain, somewhat to my surprise, whilst temperatures were pretty reasonable even in the mountains- though it was cold at night at Dasyueshan where the unheated hotel was a bit of a shock, but in a great birding spot, so overall it was bearable. Fog on the heights of Hohuanshan was a shame but at least the mid and lower levels stayed clear. Otherwise the lowland sites were all good despite it being very windy at Hengchun in the far south. Arco and I decided to use a varied assortment of local eating places with primarily local menus, and much to my amazement I found myself enjoying noodle dishes. The food was a highlight in fact, as it was varied, often delicious and best of all served quickly whilst being both hot and fresh. A nice adjunct to the trip, and avoided losing lots of time with elaborate meals.

In both observations, a male and female rapidly raised their tails to a horizontal position and slowly returned them to a vertical hanging position. During these displays, both individuals simultaneously emitted loud calls approximately every 5 seconds, forming a duet. The first display lasted 30 minutes while the second lasted approximately 45 minutes. This `raised tail' behavior has been reported for several species of trogons during courtship and when mobbing a predator. Because there were no predators present during both observations, the described `raised tail' behavior was most likely a courtship display.

After a hiatus of 4 months, four hen “Mexican” Wild Turkeys filed past their cabin at dusk and headed downstream. The 100’ tall sycamore that spreads its immense white limbs over our roof, just 200 yards down canyon, has long been their traditional roost. The return of the turkeys seems like a good omen to me. For starters it means spring is on its way. Four hens means that come May at least one glorious, turquoise- headed gobbler will be strutting around the lawn with its radiant tail wide-spread and its coppery wings seductively drooped, uttering bursts of a wild and throaty love song. By then the sycamore will be aflame with small, pastel leaves casting a subtle green translucence over our home. A half-dozen species of hummingbirds will be patronizing the yard, spilling wine-tinted thimbles of iridescence as they perform courtship jigs and describe a meteoric calligraphy of aggression.
