MEMORIES of a VILLAGE BOY by Michael O’Brien MEMORIES OF A VILLAGE BOY by Michael O’Brien Having grown up in the Village the hall was always the centre of attraction for us young lads. (Southern Star 10 Oct 1970) One evening before a show we saw this man pulling a cart behind him as he walked through the Village. Who TEENAGE PARTY was it but David Walsh from Trabolgan rd Whitegate with his The Aghada teenagers organised mobile chipper he made himself. TOWER PLAYERS IN AGHADA (Southern Star 22 Feb 1969) Another big day that I Finalists in the adults section of the talent remember was in 1971 contest in conjunction with the Tower TEENAGE RECORD HOP the East Cork GAA Players Show In the Parochial Hall The Aghada Teenage Board Convention was recently, were: Joe Sheehan, who sang Committee organised their held in the hall. What a day we had as Justin McCarthy presented our medals to us. As we turned to teenagers we set up a youth club of which I became secretary. We had a vibrant club and it served the Parish well for the next three of four years. The Youth club held Disco’s, Concert etc, we introduced badminton, table tennis, darts, produced a news letter every month (no computers that time). You name it we done it. What a group of lads and lassies all with their own special talents, just to mention a few that passed to their eternal reward before their time Terence Day, Michael Counihan, Amelia Morressy, and Billy Ahern. O what fun we had. Around that time the Corkbeg Soccer Club used to run dances, Gay Cotter was the man in charge. Many different bands with all types’ music played there but one night I will never forget. Gay booked a band called Sleepy Hollow. From early that night the village filled up as Sleepy Hollow had a Sleepy Hollow Line up; Mick Daly, Fin Costello, Len big following whom nearly all were De La Cour (drummer) Bill O’Brien dressed in black. Word went out and extra security was sent for, but what a night it turned out a great crowd just rocked to the heavy metal that Sleepy Hollow belted out. Aghada never hear the like before and it was late into the morning before Aghada Village returned to its sleepy state. Sleepy Hollows roadie Joe O’Herlihy went on to become sound man with U2. Another band to make waves was the Fermoy (Southern Star 6 Jan 1979) AGHADA GAA outfit Loudest Whisper an Irish folk Aghada GAA annual general meeting rock/progressive folk band who again had a huge took place recently in the Parochial Hall following. Now I have been entrusted with updating that chronicle. While obviously the emphasis will be on the events of the last twenty-five years - the most momentous period in the history of rugby union - as a tribute to the founding fathers, the first chapter of the original history will yet again appear. While it would not be practical to include a detailed history of the first 100 years chapter two is a brief resume of the achievements of the first fifty years and likewise chapter three embraces the significant events of the second fifty years in the illustrious history of one of Ireland’s great sporting institutions. There follows the detailed history and achievements, and they were considerable, of the last twenty five years. I owe a considerable debt of gratitude to many people for their help during the compilation of this book. In that regard I would particularly like to thank Noel Walsh, the man with whom I liaised during the writing of the book.

  • Church of Ireland Parish Registers
National Archives Church of Ireland Parish Registers SURROGATES This listing of Church of Ireland parochial records available in the National Archives is not a list of original parochial returns. Instead it is a list of transcripts, abstracts, and single returns. The Parish Searches consist of thirteen volumes of searches made in Church of Ireland parochial returns (generally baptisms, but sometimes also marriages). The searches were requested in order to ascertain whether the applicant to the Public Record Office of Ireland in the post-1908 period was entitled to an Old Age Pension based on evidence abstracted from the parochial returns then in existence in the Public Record Office of Ireland. Sometimes only one search – against a specific individual – has been recorded from a given parish. Multiple searches against various individuals in city parishes have been recorded in volume 13 and all thirteen volumes are now available for consultation on six microfilms, reference numbers: MFGS 55/1–5 and MFGS 56/1. Many of the surviving transcripts are for one individual only – for example, accessions 999/562 and 999/565 respectively, are certified copy entries in parish registers of baptisms ordered according to address, parish, diocese; or extracts from parish registers for baptismal searches. Many such extracts are for one individual in one parish only. Some of the extracts relate to a specific surname only – for example accession M 474 is a search against the surname ”Seymour” solely (with related names). Many of the transcripts relate to Church of Ireland parochial microfilms – a programme of microfilming which was carried out by the Public Record Office of Ireland in the 1950s.

Representative Church Body Library, Dublin D 16 Records of the diocese of Cloyne. 1634-1934 A miscellaneous collection of loose papers and a few bound volumes, relating to the diocese of Cloyne, from the early seventeenth century to the early twentieth century. This includes eighteenth-century visitations and rural deanery returns; as well as many items relating to the administration of the diocese, c. 1634 - 1934. Much of the early material relates to the achievements of a succession of bishops (including George Synge, Edward Synge, William Pallister, John Pooley and Charles Crow), in regaining control lands belonging to the diocese of Cloyne, which had been unlawfully granted out of diocesan control to the Fitzgeralds and other families, by a fee-farm lease, dated 1575. The wide range of miscellaneous material in the collection includes an unusual book of oaths, which records oaths sworn by new incumbents and lay officers 1675-1717, and a rare astrological chart. The collection also contains material relating to the Archer, Purdon, Hanby, Uniacke, Barry, Longfield and related families, of counties Cork and Dublin, as well as routine diocesan business.
