4.1.2 CULTURAL/YOGA/GAMES/SPORTS 1. Cultural Activities The overall ambience of Visva Bharati truly demands exceptionality. Here learning is a holistic all-encompassing process rather than a regulated and stifling experience. Large portions of the campus are open to the general public as Santiniketan and Visva-Bharati are as much cultural pilgrimage spaces as they are educational institutes. The overall ambience of the university is a small town with students, teachers, administrative staff rubbing their shoulders in the common campus space with locals and visitors. It must be noted that entry of visitors into academic classes and spaces during the academic exercise are not permitted. Many of the university’s facilities and spaces – washrooms, roads, museums, parts of the core Ashrama areas during specific times – are open to public viewing and visiting. During cultural events and utsavs in Visva-Bharati’s packed academic calendar, visitors are allowed into the campus especially during the two major events of Vasanta Utsav and Poush Mela. During those times, a large number of Visva-Bharati facilities and spaces are open to the public albeit under careful scrutiny and control. 1. Poush Mela: Poush Mela is celebrated for three days in mid-December that takes place in the large Mela Maath opposite the ashram. Poush Mela is an annual fair and festival that marks the harvest season. The event is characterized by its live performances of Bengali folk music, especially Bauls, tribal dance (Santhali), firework displays. The rows of stalls here sell a wide variety of products like toys, garments, books, household items, utensils and local handicrafts. -

His ancestors from thirteen generations were members of the priest class and for centuries had been in charge of the temple in their village Tapeshwaram. At the age of 9, Sharmaji entered the priesthood, as had many previous family members from Amaravati. He graduated from Sri Venkateshwara Vedic School, Tirupathi and came to US in 1994 to Aurora Temple, Chicago. In 1997, he was asked by Datta Yoga Center through Ganapathi Sachidanda Swa. miji's blessings to accept a position as Head Priest in Datta Temple, Baton Rouge, LA. He continued his career in Datta Temple as a registered Hindu priest with East Baton Rouge Clerk of Court. In august 2007, he got relieved from his responsibilities as Head priest from Datta Temple. During this time he performed many pujas in temple and with devotees all around the nation for many festivals and special occasions. Beginning August 2007, he independently started performing all religious ceremonies as a step towards building his personal service to the community. He started his first religious service with Lord Ganesh Puja on Vinayaka Chavithi on 09/15/2007 with all the support from devotees and friends. We expect full support and encouragement from all the devotees in his future developments just as much in the past. Being true believers of ancestors and pious culture with utmost admiration and whole hearted dedication, Sharmaji is participating in propagating the Vedic culture for all devotees. -

Abstract Aghoreshwar Mahaprabhu Baba Bhagawan Ram Ji, a well-established saint of the holy city of Varanasi in north India, initiated many changes into the erstwhile Aghor tradition of ascetics in India. This tradition is regarded as an ancient system of spiritual or mystical knowledge by its practitioners and at least some of the practices followed in this tradition can certainly be traced back at least to the time of the Buddha. Over the course of the centuries practitioners of this tradition have interacted with groups of other mystical traditions, exchanging ideas and practices so that both parties in the exchange appear to have been influenced by the other. Naturally, such an interaction between groups can lead to difficulty in determining a clear course of development of the tradition. In this dissertation I bring together micro-history, hagiography, folklore, religious and comparative studies together in an attempt to understand how this modern day religious-spiritual tradition has been shaped by the past and the role religion has to play in modern life, if only with reference to a single case study. -

Makar Sankranti 14 th , Thai Pongal (14 th ) Jan 2021 Makar means Capricorn and Sankranti is transition. Sankranti also means to go from one place to another place (to change direction). It also means one meets another. There is a Sankranti every month when the sun passes from one sign of the zodiac to the next. There are twelve signs of the zodiac, and thus there are twelve sankranti©s as well. Each of these sankranti©s has its own relative importance but two of these are more important - the Mesh (Aries) Sankranti and the most important, the Makar (Capricorn) Sankranti. Transition of the Sun from Sagittarius to Capricorn, during the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere is known as Makar Sankranti. From this day begins the six-month long Uttarayana, considered very auspicious for attaining higher worlds hereafter. While the traditional Indian Calendar is basically based on lunar positions, but Sankranti is a solar event, so while dates of all festivals keep changing, the English calendar date of Makar Sankranti is always same, 14th January. Makar Sankranti is celebrated in the Hindu calendar month of Magha. There is another significance of this day, after this day the days start becoming longer & warmer, and thus the chill of winter in on decline. To Hindus, the sun stands for knowledge, spiritual light and wisdom. Makar Sankranti signifies that we should turn away from the darkness of delusion in which we live, and begin to joyously let the light within us shine brighter and brighter. We should gradually begin to grow in purity, wisdom, and knowledge, even as the sun does from this day. -
