Nayak S.K. Mishra Department of Economics North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong (India) Abstract The paper is an attempt to evaluate the efficiency of Pena’s DP-2 method over a host of methods used to make composite indices. To undertake this exercise, variables and data used and methodology adopted in Human Development Report 2011 are employed along with nine other methodologies employed by other scholars. Although there is no agreed principle of judging an index to be best among alternative indices, it may be suggested that the composite index which is most informative among all other indices may be considered as the most acceptable one. The present study reveals that Pena-DP2 index and Penmax index have close similarity. Computationally, Pena’s method of construction of index is much simpler, but the interpretation of Penmax index is more straightforward. On the other hand, Maxmin index is norm-based and has a justification on Wald’s principle of decision-making. The Maxmin index also is the most egalitarian index against the Principal Component based index, which is known to be most elitist. On ‘sum of absolute correlation’ and ‘sum of squared correlation’, too, the Maxmin index is superior to other indices.

ZOFFMANN * The topographical position and size of the site, the number of detected houses, the presence of the early phase make the Apc-Berekalja I settlement one of the most significant sites of the LBK in Hungary. The ongoing processing of the excavation data provided already some very important observations. The geoarchaeological results demonstrated the presence of the in situ soil of the Neolithic period and effects of floods on the settlement. The study of the chipped and ground stone material coming from the Neolithic features revealed no conspicuous changes in the lithic industry of the settlement from the pre-Notenkopf to Želiezovce phases of the LBK. Lithic raw materials came exclusively from territories to the east of the site, which is an evidence of the isolation of the LBK groups that inhabited Apc. Keywords: LBK, settlement structure, houses, interdisciplinarity Földrajzi helyzete, a lelőhely mérete, a megfigyelt házak száma és a korai fázis megléte alapján Apc-Berekalja I. az egyik legjelentősebb magyarországi VK-település. Az ásatási adatok még folya- matban lévő feldolgozása során közlésre méltó eredmények születtek. A geoarcheológiai vizsgálatok kimutatták egy neolitikus korú talaj in situ meglétét, valamint a települést sújtó áradásokat. A neolitikus korú objektumokból származó pattintott és szerszámkövek a település fennállása alatt a kőipar lényegi változatlanságáról tanúskodnak a VK korai időszakától a zselízi fázisáig.

    RENCOM – Workpackage 4 – Hungarian case studies: Eger Bull’s blood project Page 1 Eger Bull’s blood project (Heves) Winegrowers play a major rule in this county. Bull’s blood is one of the two most famous wines in Hungary (the other one is the „old Tokay” from the county next to Heves) which is grown in Eger, the capital city of Heves. After the transition in the early 90’s, many new small farmers have appeared on the hills of Eger, who try to produce Bull’s blood. At this time there wasn’t any approving method to control the quality of wines. This situation was very harmful for the wine-growers who tried to sell quality wines with high prices, and of course it was very harmful for the famous brand, „Bull’s blood”. But many small farmers produced red wine under the brand’s name “Bull’s blood”, whose quality were not suitable, and before the transition, in the foreign markets the brand became the synonym of a “moderate quality” Hungarian red wine, and these bottles abided on the bottom shelves of the supermarkets. Another problem also arose: Eger’s farmers can’t deal with each other if the Bull’s blood has to become the region’s dominant famed high quality wine or it should remain an in quantity produced and within easy reach market-leader red wine. We try to focus on a special network in which actors try to rebuild the brand of the wine in the Hungarian market as well as in the world market.

Heves megyét azonban ebből a szempontból még eddig nem vizsgálta senki, bár a vonatkozó adó- és dézsmaösszeírásokat publikálták és kiadták. Kíváncsi voltam, miután több ilyen témájú tanulmányt olvastam, hogy szűkebb pátriámban valóban ak- kora volt-e a pusztítás, mint például a Délvidéken, ahogy azt Engel Pál tanulmánya130 boncolgatja. A korszak ilyen szempontból gazdag forrásokban, hiszen rendelkezésünkre állnak mind a dézsmajegyzékek, mind a török adóösszeírások, a defterek. Ezek feldolgozása és kiadása napjainkban is zajlik, de az isztambuli levéltár, illetve több európai levéltár is őriz még bőven ilyen forrásokat. Már a 19. században megindult e források feldolgozása,131 majd aktívan folytatódott a múlt században is (Fekete Lajos, Dávid Géza).132 Az ezekről a forrásokról megjelent ösz- szefoglaló igénnyel készült mű Káldy-Nagy Gyula nevéhez fűződik.133 Engel Pál több délvidéki szandzsák összeírásából dolgozott,134 illetve más források- ból is vizsgálta ezt a kérdést.135 Kimutatta, hogy a Délvidék jelentős károkat szenvedett el a török portyák miatt, lakossága számottevően megcsappant, a települések nagy része pedig eltűnt. 130 Engel Pál: A török dúlás hatása a népességre. The National Assembly elections on April 11 and 25 were assessed as free and fair, with the conservative Fidesz- Christian Democrat (KDNP) coalition winning enough seats in the second round to achieve a two-thirds majority. Fidesz's prime ministerial candidate, Viktor Orban, took office on May 29. Security forces reported to civilian authorities. Human rights problems included police use of excessive force against suspects, particularly Roma; new restrictions on due process; new laws that expanded restrictions on speech and the types of media subject to government regulation; government corruption; societal violence against women and children; sexual harassment of women; and trafficking in persons. Other problems continued, including extremist violence and harsh rhetoric against ethnic and religious minority groups and discrimination against Roma in education, housing, employment, and access to social services. In December 2009 the Somogy County Military Prosecutor's Office pressed charges against 10 prison guards at the Kaposvar prison for causing the death of a pretrial detainee and physically assaulting nine other inmates in February 2009.

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 25th September 2009 2 Abstract This thesis examines the nature of lord-peasant relations in the final stages of Hungarian seigneurialism, dating roughly from 1700 to the emancipation of the peasantry in 1848. It investigates how the terms of the peasants’ relations with their lords, especially their obligations and the rights to the land they farmed, were established, both through written law and by customary practice. It also examines how the reforms of this period sought to redefine lord-peasant relations and rights to landed property. Under Maria Theresa land reform had been a means to protect the rural status quo and the livelihood of the peasantry: by the end of the 1840s it had become an integral part of a liberal reform movement aiming at the complete overhaul of Hungary’s ‘feudal’ social and economic system. In this period the status of the peasantry underpinned all attempts at reform. All reforms were claimed to be in the best interests of the peasantry, yet none stemmed from the peasants themselves. Conversely, the peasantry had means to voice their grievances through petitions and recourse to the courts, and took the opportunity provided by the reforms to reassert their rights and renegotiate the terms of their relations to their landlords.
