  • The Maturation of Russell Westbrook
The Maturation of Russell Westbrook Khris Matthews-Marion Contributing Writer, Sports Radio America “I think Russell’s demeanor and his aggression is what the DNA of a team should be. He’s aggressive and he’s unapologetic about the way he plays. “I believe Russell has the same mentality that I have had, which is that criticism doesn’t matter.” -- Kobe Bryant on Russell Westbrook’s development. Oklahoma City – When he was drafted fourth overall by the Seattle Supersonics in the 2008 NBA draft, analysts struggled to come up with a player comparison for him. Marc Jackson compared him to Gary Payton and because of his rebounding ability; the media tabbed Rajon Rondo as the best example of what he could turn into. Still, others thought he was built in the Steve Francis mold. However, it may be the Black Mamba, in terms of intensity and eye- popping athletic ability, who may be the closest and best equivalent when looking at the future of Russell Westbrook. Kobe Bryant is arguably the greatest player the NBA has seen in the last thirty years not named Michael Jordan. He has been the heartbeat of LA's most historic team for almost two decades and has hoisted the Larry O'Brien trophy five separate times. His comments during ESPN Grantland's Basketball Hour were revealing about the level of respect he has for a man who is walking down a similar path. His experience, success, basketball acumen and specifically his relationship with Shaquille O'Neal made him a perfect candidate to judge the maturation of man who is escaping the shadow of an established star.

A formula for victory: Trust, talent, work and fun “I’ve always been intrigued with winning and what it takes to win.” — Dennie Bridges As one of the winningest coaches in NCAA Division III history, Dennie Bridges knows a lot about victory. As a young coach, he was guided by the Vince Lombardi quote, “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.” He framed the quote and put it up on the locker room wall. But it didn’t feel quite right, and he later took it down. Bridges also likes legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden’s quote, “Nobody can win without talent, but not everybody can win with talent.” “At his level he had Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton and Bryan Crabtree ’97 and Buck Condill ’99 lift Bridges in Keith Wilkes. At my level I had Jack Sikma, Blaise Bugajski celebration after winning the and Bryan Crabtree,” Bridges wrote in his 2002 memoir A 1997 Division III championship tournament.

  • Renormalizing Individual Performance Metrics for Cultural Heritage Management of Sports Records
Renormalizing individual performance metrics for cultural heritage management of sports records Alexander M. Petersen1 and Orion Penner2 1Management of Complex Systems Department, Ernest and Julio Gallo Management Program, School of Engineering, University of California, Merced, CA 95343 2Chair of Innovation and Intellectual Property Policy, College of Management of Technology, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. (Dated: April 21, 2020) Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to significant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multi- billion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is par- ticularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we find that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era.

  • Chicago Bulls Keep Place As Most Popular Professional Basketball Team, Followed by Houston Rockets and Boston Celtics
The THE HARRIS POLL 1996 #3 For Release: Monday, January 22, 1996 CHICAGO BULLS KEEP PLACE AS MOST POPULAR PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL TEAM, FOLLOWED BY HOUSTON ROCKETS AND BOSTON CELTICS Kentucky tops list of favorite college basketball teams with Duke and North Carolina in second and third place. by Humphrey Taylor The Chicago Bulls are still the nation's favorite professional basketball team and Kentucky is the most popular college team. The Bulls' popularity can be attributed to the exploits of Michael Jordan, America's most popular athlete. Also, the Bulls have the best record in pro basketball this year. Kentucky, which has a long tradition of producing strong college basketball teams, is thought by many experts to have one of the best (if not the best) teams this year. The Wildcats are currently number two in the Associated Press' mens college basketball poll. These are the results of a Harris Poll of 1,004 adults surveyed between November 30 and December 3, 1995. The Houst~nRockets edged out the Boston Celtics for second place among professional teams. Two years ago, the Rockets were in tenth place; their rapid rise in popularity is due in large part to their victories in the last two NBA championships. Another professional team which has moved up sharply since December 1993 is the Indiana Pacers to eighth place; they were not in the top fifteen two years ago. The Phoenix Suns have maintained their fifth place spot and the New York Knicks keep the fourth place. • In Just a Few Weeks, My Nephew Henry Will Be Setting out on a New Adventure, Starting Kindergarten for the First Time
In just a few weeks, my nephew Henry will be setting out on a new adventure, starting kindergarten for the first time. Most of us remember that part of our lives. And while I don’t remember the first day specifically, I do remember it being a bit of a change from my morning routine of kids shows and the safety and comfort of home. And in the years that followed, school and growing up brought with it many ups and downs. There were some tough classes, some tough people to deal with, some smooth spots and rough spots. But there was also the need to trust that through the inevitable challenges, that as a person if I wanted to grow I had to trust in God’s plan, but also be willing to trust that God might take me to places that required me to do new things if I wanted to change as a person. If you were to look up the name Vin Baker, you would find one of the assistant coaches of the NBA. An astute basketball mind would remember him as a player for the Timberwolves for one season. But if you were to look at his life, what you’d find is a man who at one point had become stuck in a rut, a very dangerous one that seemed that it would never change. And to find the way out of that, he’d have to trust in God and reach out to Him, trust in other people, and realize that what he was clinging to wasn’t fulfilling him, but destroying him.
